Sunday Selections

Sunday Selections, brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, is an ongoing theme where participants post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Anyone can join in, just post your photos under the Sunday Selections title, link back to Kim, then add your name to her Linky list at Frogpondsrock.

This week I am going back to another of my obsessions, the garden.  The tiger lilies are now about 8 feet tall and are coming out more each day.  A delight.  In the second photo I also managed to capture an insect resting on a bud - which I hadn't realised until after I had downloaded the photo.  As usual, clicking on any photo will enlarge it.

The sea holly pictured above is new to our garden, but I love the bluey grey and will plant more next year.

And, for something completely diferent, another sunset.

  1. We have tiger lilies in our garden in summer but I don't think they have ever reached the height of yours...beautiful.. Love the sky shots.

    How utterly delightful.

    Pam :)

  6. I love seeing beautiful flowers at this point in winter, when everything looks a bit brown and crusty. The mountains here look lovely with snow, but everything else looks a bit tired.

  7. Stunning.

Where do you live? I see your date says Jan 29.

Love your garden of Eden. X

    dinahmow: Its great isn't it?

  11. A lovely garden indeed. Your lilies are just gorgeous.
How about linking to TODAY'S FLOWERS as well. The meme starts this evening and you can find the logo/link on my side bar, it is a blue rose.

  12. I love Tiger Lilies. Maybe it's the name, or the orange with spots, or the narrow exotic petals. I bet your garden is a lot of work. You are amazing to keep it up.

  13. I'm so envious of your garden, and the sea holly contrast has that WOW factor.

  14. The lilies are just gorgeous - and I too love the bluey-grey sea holly. I have seen varieties which are much more blue, but I really like the colour of this one.

Your garden must give you a great deal of pleasure (and hard work?)

Thank you for these; they, and the 2 lovely sunset shots, are simply beautiful.

  15. Arija: Thank you so much. I will have a look at that meme later if time allows.

Strayer: The garden is a lot of work. Never finished work. But it is an obsession as well.

Toni: Welcome and thank you. I am really pleased with the sea holly too.

Alexia: Lots of pleasure, lots of work. Unfortunately often when looking at it all I see is the hard work. Taking photos makes me concentrate on the positives. And the sunsets at least require no work on my part.

  16. Your garden is coming along nicely. I do like the purple flower in the 6th photo its very striking indeed and the very vivid white flowers in the 8th and 9th photos :-).

  17. Beautiful sunsets.

I think I had a photo of some sea holly a few weeks back, or if I didn't post it I at least took it. Didn't know what it was called though, so thank you :)

The purple flower is also very striking.

  18. I had no idea lilies could grow so tall! I've never seen sea holly before although I've heard of it.
Is it prickly? It looks prickly.
I enjoy "walking" through your garden.

  19. Amazing tiger lilies - amazing! Love the sunset shots too.

  20. Windsmoke: Thank you. The purple flower is a hibiscus bloom. It was the first out this year. The white ones are lilies.

permanently amanda: Thank you. Hard work rewarded.

River: Thank you. There will be more garden photos to come. Lilies don't usually become skyscapers. These are obviously very happy with their position. Sea holly is prickly, but striking with it.

LadyFi: Thank you. The tiger lilies are incredible this year. Make me smile each morning.

  21. What! No birds? ;-)

You have a lovely garden and that sunset is just breathtakingly beautiful!

  22. Sea holly! What a name for something so smoky. Lovely pics!

  23. You have a thumbnail on your blog with a beautiful tiger swimming. When you log on to a meme, it will ask you for a thumbnail, just click on 'from your computer an you can select any picture you want and it will be reduced in size, or you can click on your tiger, then on done. Hope you can understand this drivvel.

  24. Your garden is astoundingly beautiful, E-Child, worth all your effort and the sunset really just complements the colours that you've managed to coax out of the ground and blossom.

  25. I can smell the flowers from here.

  26. I so enjoyed your birds, but I am also enjoying your beautiful flowers. In a week or so I will take the bus with the Senior Center down to Seattle to the Flower and Garden Show, so that I can inhale all the fragrances and feast my eyes. Until then, I can come over here and enjoy your garden. And the sunset! Wow!

  27. Another lovely series of photographs. I learned about the Tiger Lily for the first time this year on one of our walks. They're just beautiful as are all the other flowers in your garden, and that is an incredible sunset.

  28. A lovely garden tour, and that sunset is WOW!

  29. My goodness, you have some spectacular sunsets!! Gorgeous!

I'm glad the insect on your tiger lilies wasn't a Lily Beetle! They have eaten my lilies to shreds, because I can't bring myself to kill them. It'll be daylilies for me in future!!

  30. Carolina: Thank you. No birds this time. They will be back.

Ampersand Duck: Who knows where these names spring from....

Arija: Thank you. I might join in next week, though many of the flowers on display left me in complete awe.

    Kath Lockett: Thank you. Lots.

    Pearl: Gardens are a joy.

DJan: I am looking forward to your post on the Flower and Garden Show.

Denise: Tiger lilies always do well here - but this year they are amazing. I have never had or heard about 8 foot flower spikes before.

    Karen: Thank you.

Jay at the Depp Effect: I haven't heard of the lily beetle. Hopefully we don't get them because they sound mean.

  31. I've never seen a tiger lilly before, only read about them. What an amazing flower.

  32. Marita: Thanks - they are an amazing flower. We are having grey days here and they provide a vibrant splash to dispell gloom.

  33. Lovely and enchanting. A garden to get lost in.

    ReplyDelete
  34. J Cosmo Newberry: Thank you. There are certainly some parts that are a bit jungle like.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What the beautiful colours! I can see only white behind the window and these colours make me feel happy :)))

  36. Your garden has many beauties in it...like the white flower the best

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ken.G: I am glad to add some happiness to your day.

Kim @ Stuff: Thank you. I like them all.

  38. Tiger lilies??? All I see in my yard is snow and dog poop. =(

    I'm jealous!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love your garden. Such an oasis. I will show your pics to my husband, he collects daylilies the way I collect books. Peace...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Have Myelin: We also have the dog poop. I am envious of your snow.

Linda: Welcome and thank you. It is a lot of hard work - but it does pay dividends.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh wow! They are pretty amazing tiger lilies Sorry it took me so long to get over here. BUT you know what they say. Good things come to those who wait :) Gorgeous photos this week. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I never knew tiger lillys could grow so tall!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Gemma: Neither did we. A perfect year for tiger lilies obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh, this is disheartening - I left a comment on this post not long after you published it, but now I see no sign of it! I can't remember what I wrote now, except that I raved about your gorgeous Tiger Lilies, which are larger and more beautiful than any I've ever seen before (and I've don't recall ever seen them hanging down like yours do), and I also wondered what variety the beautiful white lilies with the red bits (pardon my botany jargon - lol) might be. They are especially striking!

And of course, your sunset photos are breathtaking!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Laloofah: I am sorry. Blogger does seem to have been having the odd hissy fit when people are leaving comments. I know I have had trouble on a couple of blogs.
The Tiger Lilies are much taller than we have ever seen them and have more flowers to the stem as well. A daily delight. The White Lilium is an Oriental Lilium, but more than that I can't tell you. Those pollen laden stamens stain everything they touch.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It just feels so good to look at flower photos :) You have such a beautiful variety. I've got a bag of 285 Mt. Hood white dafodills I still haven't gotten in the ground - seperated out from splits last summer.

On an up-note, with all of this warmth and lack of snow, my neighbors little daffodills are already in bloom!Bizarre.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Spectra: The purveyors of garden porn are sending us catalogues of all the beautiful things the garden just NEEDS. And, dammit, we will succumb.
Go put those daffodils in the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Surely, someone touched that sunset up a little bit! It's really phenomenal.

I used to pick day lily flower buds that were almost ready to open, batter them, and stir-fry them, so I'm wondering if tiger lilies would be amendable to that. Of course, they're not so numerous, so it might be a poor bargain to exchange their beauty for their taste.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Snowbrush: That sunset was an untouched up phenomena. It was just gob smackingly beautiful. And very fleeting. The sky blazed for a very few minutes and then the glow dimmed away.
I have a feeling that tiger lilies are poisonous so it is an experiment I am not ready to try just yet.

  50. I love visiting your page just to see your cats :)

But that sunset - golden, golden Heavens... Beautiful.
