Sunday Selections

Sunday Selections, brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, is an ongoing theme where participants post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Anyone can join in, just post your photos under the Sunday Selections title, link back to Kim, then add your name to her Linky list at Frogpondsrock.

On Thursday of last week I went to the Japanese Gardens at Cowra and took many, many photos.  The lovely Ms O'Dyne liked the ducks and carp I featured in the post about that trip, so I am putting some of the other photographs of them for her.

  1. That little duckling looks like he could be swallowed up by the huge carp! Beautiful pictures, if a bit scary! :-)

  2. I was just about to say the same thing that DJan said! The babies are so cute!

  3. Hi EC,

Crikey - those fish are bigger than the ducks.

    Not piranhas are they?

    ;-)

    Cheers

  4. DJan: The mother duck was never very far away and the carp are seriously overfed by visitors to the gardens.

Cindi: The ducklings are super cute.

PM: Some of the carp were huge. There were lots of little ones too. Hopefully not a piranha to be seen.

  5. Li'l D would be so jealous if he saw these sweet photos! Fish and duckies (the latter exempt from his "birds are evil" rule) are two of his favorite things.

  6. They seemed to be swimming in harmony. I like that.

  7. mybabyjohn/Delores: The splashes of colour were very pretty.

Deb: Lil'D would have been in his element there. It is sad that he believes birds to be evil though.

Lynn: The harmony was greed. All of them saw people and decided that all people had food for them. Which was mostly true.

  8. hah! everyone has said the same thing I was going to say, those fish are bigger than the ducks.
    Amazing.

  9. That one of the tiny duckling with the eNORmous fish is very sweet.

  10. toushka lee: Welcome, the fish were on the large side.

Alexia: I think that the ducklings generally were very sweet. We saw seven on the water, and their parent was quite protective. Lovely to see.

  11. I wonder: were the ducklings getting a preview of what lunch could be? Great carp/koi.

  12. Bonza photos, the carp/Koi look pretty well fed and almost big enough to have duck for tea/dinner everyday :-).

  13. Oh WOW EC. Excellent photos! The Koi are so cool, and I LOVE ducks.

  14. Susan Kane: I think both the ducks and the koi do VERY well on offerings from people. For $2 a bad visitors can pick up a small bag of fish food - which the ducks also loved.

Windsmoke: Everything there was well fed.

Karen: Thank you - I have a big soft spot for ducks myself. They look so serene and under the water their little legs are going flat out. A bit like life really.

  15. Wow! look at the size of those carp. Those ducks had better be careful or they might become a tasty snack

  16. Sweet ducks, but it's the koi that catch my eye! Looks like a lovely place to visit.

  17. Kim: Some of the carp were VERY large indeed.

LadyFi: The koi provided lovely random splashes of colour. I might try and get back there when the temperatures are more reasonable.

  18. Those fish are huge! I've always wanted a big pond with koi in it. Love the little ducklings.

  19. River: I would like a pond, with running water, a waterfall, fish and ducks. In my dreams.

  20. Aww, the little ducklings are cute. One can train these carp to eat out of your hand. I've even petted one once. Weird feeling. Quite hard headed they are.

  21. You're definitely trying to talk me into digging a pond aren't you?
I did it once . . was much younger and fitter then . . but it would do me good . . . hmmmmm.I t would be worth it. Love the photos

  22. Dear EC,
Thank you for sharing more photographs from the Cowra gardens. Some of those koi/carp are so big. As DJan said, I wondered if the duckling would be eaten!

So with that in mind, there wasn't quite as much "serenity" as when I looked at the Thursday posting!

    Peace.

  23. Lovely! I was nervous that someone was going to chomp on someone else, but I wasn't sure who!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Carolina: The ducklings epitomised cute. I am not sure about petting carp, but can well believe they can be trained to eat out of your hand. I read about carp which had been trained to ring a bell (by bumping the clapper) when they wanted feeding. Hmmm.

bugerlugs63: A pond would be nice, wouldn't it? Thanks.

My Inner Chick: I hope that was a goood OOO, My Heat!

Dee Ready: Serenity was still there, despite the size of the Koi. We didn't see an aggressive act - except for snatching food from under each other's noses.

  26. Melissa Ann Goodwin: I am sorry, I wasn't ignoring you - your comment must have come in as I was replying to earlier ones. There was no chomping that I saw. Fortunately.

Cloudia: Fuzzy ducklings warm everone's hearts it seems. And thank you - but wise I do not feel.

  27. Strayer: I am getting old. When I first read your comment I read it as 'That's a lot of crap' and wondered what I had done to offend. Reread and all is clear. The carp obviously like it there and have been breeding like crazy over a long period of time.

  28. This one certainly deserved an airing. Each from fascinating. A lovely meander.

  29. Little duckling doesn't seem to mind being alone seeking its own food.
    Nice series of shots.

  30. Dave King: Thank you.

Pam: Thank you. The little ducklings parent was never very far away.

  31. Friko: I find it truly fascinating that so many of you saw this post as likely to descend into murder of ducks by carp or of carp by ducks. I really hadn't considered that aspect until the comments kept flooding in. I still maintain that both ducks and fish are too well fed to bother, but it seems that I am also innocent and a touch naive.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh, I'll take your innocence. It never occurred to me either that mayhem was impending.

All I thought was, What IS it about ducklings that is hypnotic? Many baby critters are cute, but ducklings are so teeny, so helpless, but they seem to skitter across the water.

    ReplyDelete
  33. JeannetteL.S: Thank you. Perhaps duckling are so cute because unlike cats/dogs they don't have sharp little teeth and are not likely to cause an allergic reaction. And they do not require toilet training either. Whatever the reason, they are a joy.

  34. Hi, sorry I haven't been before :)

Love the little fishes.... What a great story through pictures....

  35. Dorothy: Welcome. You really haven't had time to be here before. The fishes and the ducks were both lovely.
