Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.
Like River I generally run with a theme. Today I am responding to a request from Laloofah.
A while ago I posted some photos of the devil cat (Jazz) on the fridge - one of his favourite perches. Laloofah requested a post about the fridge - specifically about its over decorated state. I cannot remember how long it is that people have been giving us fridge magnets. Jazz knocks them down and destroys them at intervals, but there are still rather a lot on display. Magnets from places we have been, magnets from places other people have been. Cat magnets, fish magnets, bird magnets, beautiful magnets, seriously ugly magnets... As always, clicking on the photos will enlarge them.
Just below the handle you will notice some velcro - this is part of the child proof lock we had to install when Jazz learned to open the fridge - and taught Jewel.

You do have a colourful collection! Our current fridge is (by my demand) stainless steel so magnets will only grip the sides. And since it is recessed...the fridge is "decorated" only with smudge-y prints, both paw and finger! But I do have some magnets.
ReplyDeleteI like your fishes.
dinahmow: The larger fishes are silk paintings. The ceramic ones have been mended many, many times as Jazz sends them crashing to the floor.
DeleteOh what fun. The fridge is the best place to decorate because we spend so much of our time in the kitchen. Your array of magnets etc. is amazing ... speaking to many years of collecting and replacing (those that have been destroyed by your devil cat :). Our Diva Devil child, stangely doesn't bother the refrigerator ... hmmmm. Better not let her read your blog. Don't want to give her ideas.
ReplyDeleteI love that you have to lock your refrigerator to keep the cats out ... again, not a problem I have ever had. Cabinets, on the other hand ... and anything that has plastic containers in them seems to be fair game around here. If my plastic food containers arn't locked up they will be perforated with teeth marks. Well, that is life with cats ... love um just as they are. Never a dull moment.
Andrea @ From The Sol
Andrea: Cupboards should not be left open or cat(s) will put on their explorer hats. Plastic food containers are there to flex teeth and claws on. We have never had a fridge opener before either - but he is a very food oriented cat.
DeleteI've known cats who could open fridges and Josh used to open drawers and make himself a "cats nest" for a snooze. Either the napery or my underwear; surplus would be scooped onto the floor and the remainder used as bedding.
Deletedinahmow: Jazz opens the wardrobe door for them both. They jump from the dressingtable to the shelves of the wardrobe, throwing things to the ground and nesting in the remainder. And the patina of fur grows...
Deletesuch a decorative fridge
ReplyDeleteAdam: Its bright isn't it?
DeleteI had to put Remy and Shama out of the room while I read this post...I didn't want them to get any ideas if they read about Jazz knowing how to open the fridge!! They've enough bad habits as it is! Their worst one is bossing me around!
ReplyDeleteI used to have a lot of fridge magnets...not as many as you have...but I only have a couple nowadays.
Lee: After a lifetime of owning cats Jazz n Jewel are the only ones I have had who developed this little trick. Fortunately.
DeleteOne of my beautiful cats in my past used to open his Christmas presents. When we told people of his brilliance, we were laughed at, until one Christmas others witnessed his little trick; and were suitably awed! Ruska was his name...he was a lovely ginger fellow - he had a few fun and interesting tricks up his furry sleeve that he'd entertain us with at times.
DeleteLee: We have had cats that opened other people's presents - fairly comprehensively too.
DeleteA Mob Of Fridge Magnets?.
ReplyDeleteWindsmoke: A Clutter of Fridge Magnets? A Kitch of Fridge Magnets?
DeleteWow..a cat that can open the fridge. I'd love to see a video of that.
ReplyDeletemybabyjohn/Delores: It is not a habit we encourage and, since we put the lock on, he has largely lost interest in trying.
DeleteNow that's a cool gallery! My fridge is stainless steel so I lost a very large surface to put my magnets on.
ReplyDeleteKaren: There will undoubtedly be some new additions over Christmas and the challenge will be to find a home for them.
DeleteI love that cute TV magnet. You've got quite the selection there! I sure enjoyed perusing those pictures. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: The TV magnet is one of the first. It is soft so it bounces when Jazz claws it off and has (so far) survived.
DeleteSometimes I feel I may be a fridge magnet, such is the attraction I can feel towards it when late-night eating syndrome threatens. Velcro would not stop me but barbed wire and an electric fence might.
ReplyDeleteDon QuiScottie: I think a lot of us need that electric fience around the fridge - particularly in the small hours for some reason.
DeleteDear EC, those brightly colored fish--the one on the freezer part and the once to the right of the handle are eye-catching. I've never seen exotic fish as I've never visited a large aquarium. How beautiful they are.
ReplyDeleteAnd oh those cats--Jazz and Jewel. I suspect that Jazz is a master among masters when it comes to be a "cat burglar"! Peace.
Dee: Those are silk paintings which I put into a magnetic frame for the skinny portion - who has a passion for fish. And indeed fish, tropical fish in particular, are very beautiful. Jazz is indeed a master cat burglar - but is also full of charm.
DeleteAwesome. Had to post my own...
ReplyDeleteCindi: I will head over for a look in a little.
DeleteAh those delightful cats have inspired you!
ReplyDeleteAloha to YOU from Waikiki

Cloudia: Cats are always an inspiration are they not?
DeleteFantastic! When we moved out of our old house I pruned a number of magnets - but they are slowly increasing again...
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. i see that Cindi followed your example, so yes, I'm off to take a photo of my fridge.
Sophie doesn't try to open fridges. Her most annoying habit is sleeping in my bed. She climbs under everything, duvet, sheets and all, then settles down for an afternoon snooze.
Alexia: Are you sure that Sophie thinks the bed is yours? It doesn't sound like it.
DeleteI am looking forward to seeing the photo of your fridge as well.
Your fridge looks like my daughter's fridge. It is her children's bulletin board; anything they deem important they put on the fridge with one of the zillion magnets. I love it's out of control look. Too much is finer than not enough!
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: Thank you - I love the too much is finer than not enough line.
DeleteI think Jazz and Vasil were separated at birth, by the looks and temperment.
ReplyDeleteRiot Kitty: Beautiful and bad - and would we have them any other way?
DeleteWhat fun! I love good fridge magnets and no one will ever convince me that a plain fridge is a good idea :) You have some very interesting ones there, including the one slightly risque one on the left, ahem - what is the story on THAT? :)
ReplyDeletejenny_o: What eyesight you have. The 'slightly risque' one was given to my by a friend who said that it was the only thing she had seen in a very long while which didn't depict a nude woman. And she had a point.
DeleteHa ha - she had a point indeed! Thanks for filling in the back story, EC :)
DeleteI am not at all surprised your fridge is resplendent with color and mementos. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteJohn Wiswell: Thank you.
DeleteWow - what a fun fridge! When we moved, we found ourselves in a new house with a stainless steel fridge so that all our magnets don't stick...
ReplyDeleteladyfi: Stainless steel fridges seem to becoming the norm. I think I would miss the colour - and would hate cleaning cat snot from the corners....
DeleteYou win the fridge magnet award!
ReplyDeleteCrack You Whip: And it will undoubtedly be a bigger collection by the new year - unless of course Jazz has really been on a search and destroy mission. Which is quite possible.
DeleteI love your fridge collection.
ReplyDeleteI gave away a lot of magnets when I moved, now my fridge looks quite sad. There are just a few photos of grandkids and a vinyl stick-on chalk board thing for writing shopping lists on.
River: The only photos on our fridge are those of my youngest great nephews. Someday I will do a major re-organisation and see if I can put some more up. Our shopping list gets attached underneath the shopping trolley magnet.
DeleteHaha! Love the velcro! Our fridge is nowhere near as decorated as yours, but give us time....
ReplyDeleteKath Lockett: The velcro was a necessity. They learned to open the fridge - and help themselves but did not learn to close it.
Delete......and I thought I had lots of magnets etc on my fridge but not compared to your collection. Thanks for sharing. Our Henry when he was with us used to get up on the fridge and knock the magnets down but Precious doesn't bother. I have never had a cat learn to open a fridge for which I am very thankful. :)
ReplyDeleteI am not computer-wise enough to do Sunday Selections so will just enjoy those from other people.
Mimsie: You don't need to be computer-wise to play Sunday Selections (which is fortunate), just able to add a photo to a post. I am sure that your lovely daughter could assist - and we would love to have you join it.
DeleteImpressive! Our fridge is as close to pristine as makes very little difference!
ReplyDeleteDave King: Pristine is not an adjective which could be used about our house. Any of it.
DeleteWow! This makes me want to send you a magnet.
ReplyDeleteLynn: It has become a serious addiction hasn't it? Fridge-magnet collectors anonymous anyone?
DeleteThank you for this!! :-) It was just as much fun as I'd anticipated (and by the way, "over-decorated" = your words, not mine! I think it's perfect!) :-) All that color, beauty and whimsy would make me smile every time I walked into my kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of magnets on our fridge, too. In fact, it was one of the reasons (cost and high-maintenance cleaning were others) that I chose a black fridge over a stainless steel one. Can't put a magnet on a stainless steel fridge ~ total deal breaker. Mine is not nearly as fabulous as yours, but I'll get a photo of it just for you when I photograph our kitchen for the blog. You have several magnets I'm coveting, especially the beautiful flower ones that say "FlorÃade."
What a hoot that Jazz learned how to open the fridge and then taught Jewel! They sound like toddlers (only more cunning). Jazz in particular must really keep you on your toes!
Thanks again for sharing your fridge photos! It's definitely deserving of a post all its own. :-)
Laloofah: I am glad that the fridge met your expectations. Floriade is a flower festival held here each spring. It has now been running for over twenty years - which makes for a lot of magnets. Would you like one next Spring? It would be no trouble at all - or at least the only difficulty would be in choosing which one. I am looking forward to seeing your fridge in the fullness of time...
DeleteAre you kidding? I'd love one! I fear, however, that the magnet plus the postage would be a bit much. But it's so sweet of you to offer!
ReplyDeleteLaloofah: The magnets are neither expensive nor heavy. We will talk again when Floriade is up and running (September-October).
DeleteOkay, it's a deal. Perhaps we can work out a magnet swap. :-)
DeleteGreat pics! I too have magnets on our fridge. Many keep anchored ever present photos of my beautiful best friends whom I miss so much, as they are in W.A. and we now live in Vic.
ReplyDeleteI make lovely (and strong) ceramic magnets for markets. They are very popular! When I make more in the new year, I'd love to send you one - if you'd like to add to your wonderful collection :)
Vicky: I would be thrilled to receive one of your fridge magnets, and happy to make room for it. Thank you. Lots.
DeleteGreat! I'll get your addie when I have some ready in early 2013 - you can pick one you like from a selection :)
DeleteVicki: Thank you - I am really looking forward to it. (and apologies for spelling your name incorrectly in my last reply.)
DeleteWow, I was attracted to your posting like a magnet to a fridge. Like a fridge over troubled waters, I'm sending you positive wishes. This may well be the coolest posting, ever!
ReplyDeleteAnd with a fridge of sighs, I shall now go back to my blog :)
klahanie: If the pun be heard, can Gary be far behind. You are a master of punning humour and, groaning, I can only applaud you. I do hope the sunshine is coming back to your world.
DeleteThat's an amazing collection (I especially like the octopus) but I'm guessing I have one that you don't - a fridge magnet with a small vial full of brine shrimp eggs from the Great Salt Lake. It's ugly, but it appeals to me anyway...
ReplyDeleteRon Dudley: You are right - the brine shrimp eggs is a magnet I don't have. Which is not to say that I wouldn't if I or my friends had seen it - because there would certainly be room for it in my eclectic collection.
DeleteWhat a collection! And a 'cat-proof' attachment! One would never get bored at your house.
ReplyDeleteSuan Kane: The skinny portion's sister said that after nearly a month of staying with us she was still finding new things to look at. A very cluttered home, with eclectic pieces all around.
DeleteLove the platypus!
ReplyDeleteHave a manatee on mine. :-)
Pearl
Pearl: oooh. If I/we had ever seen a manatee magnet so would we.
DeleteThat is one clever Jazz!!! Love your collection of magnets. Your fridge is a work of art. We had something similar with our fridge. Family and friends gave us a lot and we would pick up a few from various places we went to. Thanks for stopping by. I enjoyed your story about your Dad's secret location where he brought back armloads of berries. That's a lovely memory.
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: Jazz is indeed clever. It is a shame that he doesn't put his talents to good. I am glad you enjoyed the fridge. Is yours still covered in magnets?
DeleteI think you might need another frig and a freezer for your collection. Ha.
ReplyDeleteLinda Starr: The fridge gets entirely too much attention from me as it is. I do not want another one. Really I don't.
DeleteAs long as Jazz can open the fridg you might consider teaching him to cook supper :>)
ReplyDeleteI love your artistic fridg, is a magnificent masterpiece that you can rearrange again and again!
Be well and happy ~:)
Pam:): I suspect that Jazz would only cook meat dishes if he cooked at all. And you are right about the re-arranging of the magnets - Jazz prompts that as well.
DeleteOh My what a colorful fridge door :). I am sure the content is just as colorful.
ReplyDeleteunikorna: At this time of year, the fruit and vegetables are a joy so yes, it is colorful on both sides of the door.
DeleteThis an over exciting fridge magnet door however on enlarging it I found a small and unobtrusive Duck bill platypus an intriguing creature for sure. Have you ever seen one? I am wondering.
ReplyDeletethe cuby poet: Platypuses are a marvel. I have seen one, briefly, many years ago - and would love to be that privileged again.
DeleteOf all things you should post this now. Steve the kitten just learned how to climb on top of the fridge this past week and has been spending lots of time flinging magnets across the room. And if it's a magnet he particularly likes, it will reappear later not on the kitchen floor, but with his pile of cat toys elsewhere in the house. Leave it, though, to Devil-cat Jazz to figure out how to open the fridge! I shudder to contemplate...! That one certainly is one frighteningly cunning kitty.
ReplyDeletePaper Chipmunk (aka Ellen): Fridge magnets make great toys. Jazz particularly likes batting them under the fridge where immense effort is required (by me) to retrieve them. I do hope that Stevie tires of his game. It is bad enough that Jazz is able to open the fridge but teaching Jewel took his iniguity to new levels.
DeleteAh, yes... teaching others... that is... frightening.
DeleteSteve has now learned how to leap from the top of the fridge to the top of the tall cupboard/bookcase in the kitchen, which is on the other side of the doorway. So he spends a significant part of the day leaping from one tall object to another across the top of the doorway. Of course, the top of the cupboard had been filled with art and tchotchkes and cards people had sent, etc. No longer. He pushed them all off to make room for landing. Darling little kitty.
Paper Chipmunk (aka Ellen): I know that cats are supposedly graceful creatures, able to land on a dime. Only if they feel like it. I spend a lot of each day picking things up that Jazz has spread from Christmas to breakfast as he barrells around the house.
DeleteTry as I might to count them, I kept losing track.. out of exasperation I finally gave up!
ReplyDeleteHave a Happy ~:)
Pam:): We have tried to count them at intervals - and also failed. I think we would have to take them all off and count them back on again to have any hope of success at that challenge.
DeleteCats are awesome creatures, aren't they? I have one that opens every bi-fold door in the house on a nightly basis.
ReplyDeleteNo magnets here. *grumble* I didn't realize stainless wouldn't allow them to stick. Won't happen next time.
Laura Eno: I vetoed the stainless steel fridge on cleaning grounds, not having thought the magnet issue through. I am content with the veto.
DeleteOmgosh,
ReplyDeleteyour fridge looks like ART. What's inside?
Love Devil Cat! Xxx Many many kisses for you.
My Inner Chick: Inside will vary from day to day. I am a vegetarian and partial to fruit. Himself likes curries and casseroles. So ... some combination of the above. At the moment both of us are hooked on cherries and berries and at the moment in addition to mangoes and cherries there are strawberries, blueberries and blackberries in the fridge. Yum.
DeleteThat's some frig front!
ReplyDeleteStrayer: It didn't happen overnight...
DeleteThis is an astounding collection of stuff, of cool, geeky wild wacky magnetic stuff! Love it!
ReplyDeleterunningfromhellwithel: Thank you. It is probably a fair analogy for the state of the house, my heart and my mind. As you say 'coo, geeky, wild wacky...'
DeleteA wonderful collection... it is very artistic!!
ReplyDeleteNicky HW: I just noticed after your comment that I had cut off the bottom third or so of the fridge - including magnets with the faces of your beautiful boys on them. I am so sorry about that.
Delete
