Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life. The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.
Like River I usually run with a theme. This week my camera has been neglected and I am going to go on a trawl through old files. All week a phrase has been lingering in my mind and my lips and it made me decide to hunt for the Frigate Bird (which is close to the phrase I was thinking of). Sadly, my freudian slip is showing. I have no images of a Frigate Bird but instead bring you The Stormy Petrel. (I had the image in my head clearly, but had an epic fail about its name.)
As always, click to embiggen.

What an amazing blue eyes bird, it looks like a form of Cormorant, but I love him/her. Thanks EC.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: Aren't those eyes incredible?
DeleteThanks from me also, EC. I know you have been busy and hope that you are doing well, and that the SP is resting and recovering. Sending you all kinds of well wishes. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: Thank you.
DeleteGorgeous bird EC, great pictures!
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: It was a privilege to see him/her.
DeleteStriking bird!
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: Striking - and elegant.
DeleteI think the bird in the first picture looks a little ticked off! That is okay, we all have those days, those weeks, those years even!
ReplyDeleteBookie: It did look a little less than benevolent - which is fine. And you are right, we do all have those periods in our life.
DeleteWhat a magnificent bird.
ReplyDeleteWendy: Isn't it?
DeleteGold at the base of it's face tuft. What a colour, what a bird, one not to start an argument with by the look on it's face.
ReplyDeleteAll Consuming: I find myself wishing I looked that intimidating. And the beauty to go with it doesn't go astray.
DeleteWhat magnificent feet he has!
ReplyDeleteI'm still working on a pun about flippers, birds, etc. You'll have to use your imagination, I guess :)
jenny_o: And what surprisingly pink feet. I am considering the flippers/birds/puns issue.
DeleteI just now realized that the pun may be a North American thing - it's along the lines of your Freudian slip ... to flip someone the bird is to make a rude gesture ...
Deletejenny_o: That bird doesn't look as if it would flip willingly. So I will do some bird-flipping on its behalf.
DeleteFunny, I have been at Petrels' Cove many times and have never encounter a petrel there and loved seeing yours. I never would have expected it to look like a cross between a cormorant and a penguin!
ReplyDeleteArija: He/she came to rest (for a couple of hours) on the deck on my trip to Antarctica. We had been through quite a storm the day before, and it had obviously taken its toll on its energy. A few hours later off it flew. Beautiful.
Deletethanks for the grin I'm grinning:)
ReplyDelete-Jennifer
Jennifer Richardson: Grins are always golden.
DeleteI'm still laughing! But also enjoying the stormy petrel, even if its name doesn't lend itself quite as well to poetic rhyme and rhyming euphemism. What striking blue eyes! And, yes, his look and body language do seem to be saying frig off (or something less polite). Or maybe that's just me anthropomorphizing.
ReplyDeletePaper Chipmunk: Not a welcoming stance was it? And that beak looked very, very powerful. Frig off indeed.
DeleteYeah…. I'd kind of like to have a beak like that to bite people with too. Doesn't that sound appealing?
DeletePaper Chipmunk (aka Ellen): Very, very appealing. Except that if I start I don't know where (or whether) I will stop.
DeleteAloha,
ReplyDeleteI'm not a bird person, (I can barely differentiate between a chicken and a turkey - and I think both smell a bit fowl :)
So, I just wanted to stop by and send best wishes to you and SP - and hoping you are both doing well :)
Mark Koopmans: Thank you. He is doing a little better today.
DeleteHe is a fine fellow, close enough is good enough.
ReplyDeleteMerle..................
Merlesworld: A very fine bird indeed. Mind you, so are Frigate Birds.
DeleteOMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG,
ReplyDeletethose blue eyes....I could swim inside of them! xxxxxxxxx
My Inner Chick: Aren't they incredible? And so unexpected too (by me anyway).
DeleteSuch a gorgeous fellow. A petrel by any other name would look as good...
ReplyDeleteHope that you are both doing well.
Alexia: The name really doesn't matter does it? We are making slow steps in the right direction. Slow and small.
DeleteBirds of the sea flew out to see and never told us what they saw.
ReplyDeleteI hope your week is more pleasant and less stressful that our last, EC...best wishes to the Skinny One. :)
Lee: Thank you. I am hoping for a quiet and peaceful and restorative week.
DeleteThe same to you and your furry dominators.
A handsome bird, but a tad grumpy looking, even with those gorgeous blue eyes!
ReplyDeleteKaren: It did seem grumpy - but very beautiful with it.
DeleteCool bird! You have some facinating birds over there!
ReplyDeleteTeresa: There are wonderful birds the world over. You have some very special ones too.
DeleteWhether it be the puffy chested Frigate, or this gorgeous Petrel with his beautiful blue eyes, 'tis no matter. We have been gifted with more of your stunning bird captures.
ReplyDeleteThank you, EC.
Wishing you and SP well, and all the best for a good week.
Vicki: Thank you - as you know I do love the birds.
DeleteFingers crossed for a much better week - and thank you for your wishes.
Beautiful bird! In that first image he is looking a bit grumpy.
ReplyDeleteGrumpy stormy petrel?
Grumpy SP?
Hope things are going well and becoming a little easier? I know it's early days yet.
River: Definitely grumpy SP (and me). Small steps in the right direction though.
DeleteShall I call this bird Grandfather or Mother. My maternal grandfather had those gorgeous blue eyes and his daughter, my mother, inherited them. They also could both give a chilling and stern look that would quiet the most rebellious heart.
ReplyDeleteGrannie Annie: What wonderful memories to be triggered by this bird - who I hope is/was a grandparent many times over. Thank you - I am smiling at the image you have given me.
DeleteOf friggit!!! You got it wrong but bought us three beautiful pictures of a very handsome bird. A rather stormy looking sea as well.
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling as good as can be expected and that the SP is gradually recovering from another dreadful ordeal. Hope you are able to get him to take some light nourishment.
Thinking of you both.
Mimsie: Thank you. The sea had been very rough after a Force ten gale. The stormy petrel deserved its rest.
DeleteWe are making tiny steps. He did eat last night (though not at all during the day).
"The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent." I thought that applied to my event, and yet... :)
ReplyDeleteNow I must be really tired. What is this Freudian slip I can't figure out? This is a gorgeous bird, I have to say.
Riot Kitty: I have no doubt that you are really, really tired. All last week 'frig it' or a close approximation rang in my head. I took no photos and decided that I would troll through old files for Sunday Selections. And just knew I had a photo of a Frigate bird. Except that I didn't.
DeleteThat is the bluest eye I have ever seen, I think. Gorgeous bird! And love that explanation to RK. :)
ReplyDeleteLynn: It is an incredible eye isn't it?
Deleteblue eyes? Cool.
ReplyDeleteAuthor R. Mac Wheeler: Much bluer than the skies - that day anyway.
DeleteI commented yesterday. Blogger apparently ate it. Grrr...
ReplyDeleteThat bird is rather fascinating-looking to me - reminiscent of a penguin and a seagull, with its startling blue eyes conveying an eerie intelligence. I feel a story coming on...
River Fairchild: It was a fascinating bird to see. And I certainly got the impression of intelligence and, when writing that story, don't forget the malevolence...
DeleteBeautiful unusual bird....always like seeing your photos
ReplyDeleteKim @ Stuff could... : Thank you.
DeleteLook at that beautiful blue eye color!! Very nice!
ReplyDeletemail4rosey: Isn't it incredible? I didn't know that birds could have eyes that colour - mind you there is a LOT I don't know.
DeleteWhat The Frigate? The Stormy Petrel is quite the bird. I'm enchanted by a bird.
ReplyDeleteKeep smiling, Sue, even through gritted teeth.
Gary
klahanie: Thanks Gary, I too was (and am) enchanted by this bird. And rather a lot of other birds. Some of my laughter verges on hysterical - but I am smiling and I am laughing.
DeleteWhat magnificent shots!
ReplyDeleteladyfi: It was a magnificent bird - and trip.
Deletebeautiful, beautiful photos. those eyes-- enchanting-- especially paired with the tuft of yellow about the beak. thanks so much for sharing... always look forward to you sunday selectons. <3
ReplyDeleteRaquel Somatra: What a lovely thing to say. And yes, that was a special bird at a special time.
DeleteI'm impressed with those beautiful blue eyes. Never seen eyes like that before.
ReplyDeleteTake good care.
xoRobyn
Rawkinrobyn.blogspot.com: Aren't those eyes incredible? Can't you just see the havoc they would wreak if a person had them?
DeleteI love this little guy! I went on and read your update on the skinny one. I hope he's feeling better. And I hope he improves so much you won't need to go off on the surgeon.
ReplyDeleteCarol Kilgore: I loved this bird too. The skinny one is doing marginally better today. Just the same, words (polite ones) do need to be said. The information provided was scanty. And the treatment of him/me very variable. And one of the registrars said that 'of course this surgery was always going to be hit and miss...' If he was telling the truth that too is something we should have known.
DeleteLove the pics and uniqueness of the birds!
ReplyDeleteTammy Theriault: Thank you.
DeleteBeautiful pics! How I've missed you!
ReplyDeleteKath Lockett: And I you. I hope you are staying for a while this time.
