Words for Wednesday

The lovely Delores at Under the Porch Light has been running this meme for a considerable period of time, week after week - even through the A to Z challenge.  Sadly she is having issues with her computer freezing on her (much as my brain does when faced with some of her words).  She has asked that someone take over on a temporary basis and I have stuck my hand up.
Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.

Wednesdays prompts are intended to help break down the barriers and get the juices flowing. Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

This weeks prompts:

Abracadabra

Carillon

Bent

Glower

Nuisance

Smiling

OR

Reluctant

Torpedo

Sweet

Growl

Persistent

Apple

    1. fishducky: River's contributions are always great. However, one of the things I love is just how many different slants and perspectives are created from the same starting point.
Later today I hope to put up a paragraph or two... And would love you to as well.

  2. I would love to do memes, but there's the problem with consistency - either I can't get out to take the proper photos for a photographic meme; or - or - or. You'll do a super job with this, I know it!

  3. Carillon?? Where's my dictionary...
I don't think these will fit in with Jimmy and Rosa; I'm going to have to do some long thinking.
Thank you, I'm sure I'll enjoy the challenge; looking forward to your contribution. And fishducky's :)

  4. Here's my effort using the first set of words.....

Emma, bent over in pain, wished by just saying “Abracadabra” out loud three times, more if necessary – as many times as it took – would make her neighbour, a smiling nuisance, stop his continuous playing of the carillon bells. Their loud, monotonous, intrusive sound and his thoughtless behaviour made her glower in anger.

    1. Lee: What fun. I suspect I would be using a frying pan on that neighbour...

  5. I was reluctant to taste the sweet apple because of the persistent rumbling it would unleash in my bowels, likely leading to a torpedo of a growl. :-)

  6. 'Abracadabra, make it so!'
Nuisance callers? Instead of glowering at them and trying to find a polite(ish) way to evict them, I could send them anywhere in the world (the universe!) with a thought. And my bent mind is smiling at the thought of some of the places they could find themselves perched precariously in or on... Or perhaps I could just replace that practised salesman spiel with a carillon. Harmonic bells ringing each time they try and open their mouths... It works for me.

  10. The reluctant door finally gave way at the last push and the Newfoundland torpedoed into the kitchen. The calico cat, perched against a wooden bowl of fruit, growled from the top of the refrigerator. The persistent giant slammed against the appliance, Golden Delicious apples rained merrily across the linoleum, and finally rolled to a stop in front of Kalinda as she entered the chaos.

Juices? I heard today that Republicans commonly believe that Obama is planning to invade Texas. My god, I thought, if they're right, I'll be packing up my CPAP and moving to Texas to join the Christian revolution. That's enough juices for me, thank you very much.

I was reluctant to move forward when I heard about the torpedo ripping through the water towards our boat. A minute before I wasn't planning on having any of the pie, but now the sweet smell of cinnamon made my stomach growl. The persistent fear made me grab a fork and I stabbed a tender chunk of apple covered in a crumble crust because in situations like this, who really cares about calories.

  16. I'd never seen the like. It was a magic act for sure, that day. We had on board our sub a warped torpedo, you see. That's right, it was bent. Persistence, by the torpedo room crew, had paid off, it seems. They'd managed to ram it into an oversized firing tube. I was skeptical at best when the captain gave the order, with a wink, smiling a bit insanely, to fire. But what on earth did we aim that crooked thing at? An apple atop some poor seaman's head, perhaps? "Nah!" replied the captain with a gleeful glower. We're going to torpedo an old rowboat around the corner! Get it? That's what bent torpedoes are for---around the corner shots!!" He slapped his knee like that was such a good joke. There was a mighty growl that grew by bounds. The tube groaned and vibrated and seemed reluctant to release its nuisance upon the world. And then it did. The torpedo was off. I held my breath. "Sweet Mary!" cursed the midshipman, "it's coming back around." We were barely submerged on training on the outskirts of a very small island. The torpedo missed the rowboat wreckage and continued its circular "bent" route, rounded the island and bore down on our sub's arse. The captain stared blankly. Crewmen crossed themselves. "Abracadabra!" I said, sarcastically. The Carillon bells in the church rang for an hour the day four seaman and one not so bright captain were laid to rest. I survived. The sub did not.

As we sat bent over the table in the darken ended room, the median uttered the magic words 'Abracadabra'. Just then the carillon bells were hear ringing near by and the medians face turned into a glower but worse was still to come as someone's mobile went off and it was just a nuisance call but it set us all smiling!

  25. Ok had my porridge, put my thinking cap on and this is the story.

One day I went apple picking and was allowed to eat as many as I liked. I thought of the saying ' an apple a day keeps the doctor away. I had seven sweet apples. That should keep me fit for the next week, I thought. it was a beautiful day, the sun was shinning and I was very happy picking from the top of my ladder when suddenly from what seems out of nowhere came a massive dog hurtling towards me like a Torpedo. He stopped at the bottom of my ladder giving a loud and angry growl. He was very persistent and reluctant to stop or leave but 2 hours later he gave up. I quickly descended and have never apple picked for that farmer again!

    1. Margaret Adamson: I think I would have been pelting that dog with some of those sweet apples. I really enjoyed both of your stories - thank you.

So that took 5 minutes. Sounds like fun. When I return to the blogsphere next week, maybe I will join this challenge and incorporate this into my blog. I do want to improve my writing. Sadly, much of seems like my old lab reports. Posting photos is so much easier for me.

He was persistent. He couldn't hide the attraction he felt for her sweet disposition, the sway of her hips, the scent of apple in her hair. Daily he asked her out until reluctantly, she said yes - but just for lunch. He didn't hear the growl of her empty stomach caused by her lack of breakfast, caused by her lateness to work, caused by her prolonged love making, caused by her boyfriend. After she ate, like a torpedo, she bolted leaving him to wallow in wonder about his bad luck with women. The next day he asked her out again.
