Irritated and grumpy

In October we had our evaporative cooler replaced.  MS loves the heat so I loathe it.  The evaporative cooler made a HUGE difference and worked like a charm.  Until it didn't.  It is now having all sorts of hissy fits and refusing to operate, scrolling a message which says a service is well overdue!!!!

So this morning I picked up the phone to contact the company which installed it.  And the phone (landline) was dead.  Sigh.  So I rang the company on my mobile.  They will be on holidays until next Monday.  Bigger sigh.

And then I started the torturous process of reporting the landline fault.  The woman I finally reached described herself at regular intervals as my friend.  And promised to get onto the issue as a priority.  Interspersed with asking me about my Christmas, New Year, the weather, my health, my loved ones...  She didn't ask about the cats, but probably would have got to it given time...

I gather it will be referred to a technician and probably fixed by the end of the week.  And am I wrong to be irritated? I didn't want a new friend.  I just want the phone fixed. I use the mobile if I have to, but its smaller buttons are not kind to my shaky hands and dodgy fine motor skills.

I am waiting for the third thing now too...

  1. Oh golly, no you aren't wrong! Just had the same thing myself. Got all new phones and switched to wireless 8 months ago. For second time the phones went dead. Tech support for days and a new Sim card and then they said new box. Before box arrived, the phone started working again just like they quit! GRRRRRRRRRRRR

  2. They come in three's it seems and gosh darn all these appliances that fail so often. Now I look for the simplest oldest types of things possible, fewer parts, cheaper simpler repairs. She was trying to be friendly to cover their lack of real service, is all. At least when the furnace broke, they were not friendly, rude even, didn't even call me to let me know they had not ordered the part and it would be days. Now that's up front. I'll never use them again. No fake friendliness at least.

  7. I hope you are the exception to 'comes in three' rule. I don't know much about evaporative cooling. Does it have big filter pads or similar?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Andrew: It does have filter pads which are dampened and then the air which blows through them is fanned through the house. It seems to be a problem with the fan. After two months it should be fine. But isn't.

  8. A temporary replacement until the real thing comes along might be a small window fan placed in front of (not behind) a shallow basin of cool water. It used to work pretty well back in my younger days in Texas.

  9. an evaporative cooler should work for eons with little trouble, some new fangled one must have parts or electronics installed to make it more complicated and need servicing; Hope all is straightened out soon. if all else fails fans and cool washcloths or cold baths or showers are the last resort. if the cell phone goes out it is good to have a land line in case of emergencies and visa versa.

something must be in the wind because our wireless modem went out on new years and then company informed us our modem wasn't covered any longer but we could rent one, (even though they provided one initially) or we could get our own, bought our own and several hours later figured out how to install the programming to go with it, now my eyes have floaters and flashing lights and I am hoping nothing major is wrong, ugh what a start we are having to the new year.

Our whole of house 'swampy' as they call the evaporative coolers down here was pushing it a bit on one of our really hot days before Christmas which did not please me at all. I had visions of tradesmen not being available, so after turning it off and resorting to the freezer type still in the lounge room wall I was Happy as Larry on the next day when it behaved itself. Each year we say we'll remove the refridgerator type one and never do so, it's been there since the 1970s and there is going to be a time when it just won't go. Let's hope that time doesn't come soon.

  14. They say fire was the gift of the gods but I declare A/C was. When I was growing up we did not have it and what I remember most about summers (other than changing everything in the house so it would stay cooler) was being hot all the bloomin time. Since I live in a high humidity hot zone we slept on dampish sheets, ate in a steaming kitchen and breathed humid air.
    A/C made summer living bearable.

Touch wood and ask the Universe... "no more incidents please".

Can you contact a household appliance hire agency to see if you can hire a portable air-con? Keep the receipts and see if your air-con company can/will reimburse you when they get back.
I know, fat chance, but worth a go.

As for landline faults, the bloody things happen all the time here. I don't even respond to the inane patter, just stay silent until something relevant is asked.

Very frustrating. And at the worst time possible.
    So sorry.

Not at all wrong to be irritated, but your niceness to your new friend has got you speedy service if in fact your landline is fixed by the end of the week. the things I might have said to her would see me getting any repairs sometime before the end of the century. Maybe. I hope you get your cooler fixed toot sweet! heat is an ugly thing to bear if you can possibly avoid it. I'm going to have to get my aircon serviced at the end of this summer, they recommend every two years and this is it third summer. 1. Carola Bartz: No phone, no cooler. And the cooler is a MUCH bigger issue.

  61. EC, I do hope things are improving for you. We've had many very, very wet days (school hols so kids trapped inside) and it's been quite cool, between 17-20C. So not too bad. I want the rain to stop now but the temp can stay down please... Fingers crossed for you...

    1. Carol: We have had a couple of damp days, and it has been cooler. For which I am very, very grateful. The heat is expected to ramp up again over the next couple though. Today (finally) the phone at least is fixed. I really, really hope they can get to the cooler quickly when they come back to work next week. (Give us this day our daily whinge, but the heat really does make life difficult for me.)

  63. Oh my - I had hoped this would be fixed by now. Maybe you could move to a hotel until it's fixed and let the skinny one stay in his beloved heat. :) I'm with ya, sister - I don't like the heat either.

Glad to see the phone is working!

    1. Lynn: The company which installed the cooler is still on holidays. How I wish it had been the other way around. The phone is MUCH less important.

  64. I;m sorry. You absolutely have every right to feel that way. Most of 2015 we had a lot of landline issues while our county road was being widened (and friends and family asking why do you still have a landline) because I want it! End of discussion. Finally now, no more overhead wires and properly (so far) installed underground wires and our landline lives again! I'm wishing you much luck for a healthy landline quick!

  65. I hope the weather stays cool while you wait for your cooler to be fixed. I've just caught up with all your posts that I missed while I was in intermittent-connection-land. Your fruit salad especially caught my eye and my imagination, what a feast for the eyes and the tummy.

    1. Kim: My fruit salad was bliss. And today I bought some more fruit for a mini-version of the Christmas extravaganza.
Sadly the temperatures are climbing again. They are predicting 36 by Wednesday. I really, really hope that when the installers return from holiday they can get onto it. Quickly.

  66. Urk - how irritating! Our landline is broken - seems as if someone dug up the cable and never fixed it before we moved in... and now the telephone company wants us to pay for it!

    1. ladyfi: I am so sorry. And of course the telephone company wants you to pay for it. Anyone rather than them. I hope you can resist the pressure.

    1. Kim @ Stuff could...: The phone is fixed. The cooler is not. Another two days before I can even contact them. It should be under warranty and I have my fingers and toes crossed they will get on to it quickly. Thank you. I know you understand.

  68. Oh no yes that is irritating, and I understand your desire not to have a friend but have the thing fixed. I hope it is now!

  69. She was trying to sweet-talk you, was she?

I know how you feel about not having a working land-line! I'd be super-irritated. I was, when I moved and had to literally BEG the telephone co. to move my line.
