Like River I usually run with a theme. As of yesterday, Jazz and I are home alone. Himself is travelling again. Starting in China and then heading into the 'Stans to travel some of the silk road.
Before he left I decided that I needed (needed I tell you) to go to the lake for, among other things, a kangaroo fix. I can get there by myself but it is two bus trips and a very long walk each way.
As always the lake was lovely. And yes, there were roos. Among other things.

Caterina: It is a delightful spot and we often go to visit it. The roos will let you get surprisingly close too. Certainly much less than 100 yards.

ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: The roos here are part of a fertility trial. They have collars and ear tags and have been given contraceptives. If the trial works and keeps the numbers down there will be less kangaroo culls. Which I am definitely in favour of, though I dislike the collars and tags.

DeleteI like the way you framed those last few shots, like picture postcards. The mob of roos is large, probably the largest I've seen here, and they're all so relaxed. Mr Pelican is also looking calm, the red and blue of the parrot though is so very bright against the white tree, that's a great shot.
ReplyDeleteRiver: We have seen bigger mobs in that spot and unless someone has a dog off leash (not allowed) or tourists are harassing them they are always relaxed. Which they do as well as cats do.

Alexia: Alone time is good. Very good. And yes, there is a part of me which is envious of his travels too, but I just couldn't do it. And certainly not as he does it.
DeleteEach picture looks like it came from National Geographic. They are quite beautiful and spring has definitely sprung. I've never seen kangaroos. It is special to see them just hanging about.
ReplyDeleteMy dogs cornered a deer one year. The deer gave both of them a severe boxing which is something that understand roos do too.

Ann Bennett: Not only can kangaroos box, they can also balance on their tail and land a MIGHTY kick with their powerful hind legs. They can be a force to reckon with, but are mostly very gentle.

River Fairchild: Thank you. I expect the Silk Road will wow him and as I said above expect he will go back several more times. Jazz hasn't drawn much blood today. Which is an improvement.

ReplyDeleteThe kangaroos remind me of a family reunion, after the picnic meal, lazing around while digesting dessert . . . The pelican is beautiful; great shots of him or her.
And when I embiggened the rosella picture (#3) I was thrilled to see the second bird in it!
I hope your partner has a wonderful trip, and that you have some special things planned for yourself, treats of some kind. Speaking of treats, would Jazz like you any better if he got special treats only when your partner was away? I have to remember, though, that not everyone responds to food rewards like I do - hah
jenny_o: The second bird in that shot is also a rosella. It is a young one, and hasn't yet got its full colouration. The green is camoflague I assume.
DeleteJazz is food oriented, but is perfectly happy to bite and spike the hand which feeds him. I have to go out tomorrow, but may bring him home some chicken.
I love the way Canberra is so close to nature.

DeleteI guess what I want to know if the kangroo is afraid of people. The reason I'm asking is..they seem to have the same attidude as our white tail deer...which does plenty of damage to our garden and such...coffee is on
ReplyDeletepeppylady (Dora): In the city, no. Not unless tourists or dogs run at them. In the country (where they are often hunted) they are more cautious. And a roo in the garden could do a LOT of damage.

ReplyDeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: Travelling is his passion. The lake is lovely, but you are right, it isn't entirely friendly to those without a car. I am glad I went, and if he was going to be gone for longer than a month would probably make the effort and go anyway.

Delete-was just at the beach today for a walk & saw pelicans (a fave), sand pipers, gulls, a few crows and small shorebirds called snowy plovers. There was just so much activity on the sand, overhead, and in the water!

DeleteOH how super are those photos, especially the parakeet (?) in front of the bark of the gumtree. I saw kangaroos just lazing about on the grass by the side of the lake in Canberra. They looked like tourists on holiday.

DeleteI love your photos of nature in your area of the world. We had a kangaroo farm near us that was open to visitors but it has closed to visitors now. I don't know the purpose of this farm, but we really enjoy driving through and see them relaxing and eating. Your park is great, but the trip with all the walking would be too much for me.
