This meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Words for Wednesday is now provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.
Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we do with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore... We can use some or all of the prompts.
Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog. I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.
The prompts will be here this month but are provided by Margaret Adamson, and her friend Sue Fulcher. They will also include photographs taken by Margaret's friend Danny McCaughan.
This week's prompts are phrases.
...Add insult to injury
And/or
Nothing ventured...
Have fun.
I am still in a dark place, and also still having email issues.
My heart goes out to those (human, animal, and birds) who are in the path of the fires tearing through so much of my country at the moment.
My heart is with you <3
ReplyDeleteLong distance hugs from Denmark. I so wish I could send Susan and her magic wand over and visit you.
ReplyDeleteI'll be publishing daily installments of my continuing story of Susan in Paris and eventually I'll make it to these prompts I hope.
And better late than never. Today I finally made it to this Wednesdays Prompts
DeleteWe Californians understand the horror. Keep safe.
ReplyDeleteI have been watching the news reports of the fires with a sinking feeling. How awful, and it's still so early in the season.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find some light at the end of the dark tunnel very soon, EC. You are such a caring and kind presence in the blog world. I hope you have some idea of how much you are loved by folks around the world. Hugs, dear friend.
Brian examined the first barrier before him. With a bold and determined spirit, Brian plowed through it easily. Then the next barrier confronted him. He found the weakness and broke through. But, the last wall was impossible. He took a breath and attacked it. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"and he raced to it at full crawl. Mommy lifted him up, carrying him to his crib. "Well, I gave it my best shot" he cried out in the language of a 10 mo. old baby.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! That does seem to be the way of babies' thinking.
DeleteI had an escapist baby too and when he started walking at nine months I really had to keep my eyes on him.
DeleteOh, this is a description of one of my babies! How did you know him this good!
DeleteWe are with you all the way, Sue.
ReplyDeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteThinking of you.
Best wishes
Ellie
Sending lots of love and hugs.
ReplyDeleteHi EC - I've been thinking of you all in the area of the fires ... it must be devastating and so worrying ... with thoughts for some relief - take care of you and yours ... with a few hugs Hilary
ReplyDeleteJack, the Cornish archetypal hero, when he was born into fairy-tale time (1734) as Jack and the Beanstalk ... he knew he wanted to live on in history ... so nothing ventured he created a new hero: Jack of Fables ...
DeleteAfter all Jack Frost had been around for centuries ... why not continue on with more Jack tales ... he's succeeded don't you thing - and we all want to read more.
Dear Sue - I hope the dark places ease, while the email challenge has gone ... all the best Hilary
Fire is so devastating. There is such a hopeless feeling watching.
ReplyDeleteThank you for giving the words for Wednesday. Not very many to pick from .. but already got mine ready to go.
I know you have so many long time friends here on the blog thinking and sending positive thoughts to you. Please know your new friends send them too.
It is with a heavy heart I'm participating today. The bushfire situation in NSW and in Qld is so, so distressing.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find yourself in a better place soon, EC....take very good care of yourself. You're in my thoughts.
"To add insult to injury, although they were much better off than I was in the monetary sense of the term, as always they arrived empty-handed.
And, as always it didn’t stop them from making pigs of themselves at the buffet table, or at the bar set up out on the deck.
This familiar behaviour of theirs had been going on for far too long, so I decided it was time for me to say something, once and for all. Nothing ventured...nothing gained..."
Good luck, i hope they listen, or get barred from coming back.
DeleteAs Jenny mentioned above, I, too, like heaps more people, wish you a safe and peaceful journey through the end of this personal tunnel. Take care, O wise one, and I did send you the other weeks' words, but if you didn't get them, I have them saved and can resend anytime :)
ReplyDeletePS: Sincere best wishes to anyone living in the path of the fires... the Aussie spirit will not be defeated -- and will overcome and succeed no matter what.
My heart aches for you, and for all who are in the path of any kind of natural disaster.
ReplyDeleteMy words are going to be up soon.
Echoing everyone else here, are you okay? Are you in any bushfire danger? Is there anything at all that I can do?
ReplyDeleteI'll do what I can with those phrases.
Dearest EC; I wish with all my heart you were happy. So much so I dropped into the "letters" to see what's up and if you had comments turned on. And you do. I must tell you, I enjoyed Susan's short essay. I had a nine month wonder--no, walker--myself. And now, all my best. It's still spring; bask in it, feel better.
ReplyDeleteDo hope you get out of your 'dark place' very soon...thinking of you often..
ReplyDeletethinking of you, be well
ReplyDeleteIt was my first real suit, bought with my own money, and chosen by me. No more hand-me-downs, no more second-hand dross from the thrift store - all my parents could afford I know, but I hated wearing them nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteThe freedom opened up by having a paying job; hence one's own money, was remarkable. I felt almost giddy with independence.
I had always had a sweet spot for Letitia; lusted after her if the truth be known. But I was always shy about approaching her in my beat-up, second-hand, out of fashion, ill-fitting clothes. That all changed with my new suit. My confidence level was up.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained I thought, so I strolled into the diner where I knew she worked after school. I tried to appear as nonchalant as possible, but in reality I might have seemed a little over-anxious.
I went up to the counter and asked her to make me a milkshake. She simply went about the business of doing that and didn't even seem to notice how fine I looked. I was bewildered. How could she not be impressed?
I was just about to start up a conversation with her when the local geek, who everyone called Dumb Willie, came into the store, and Letitia glided right around the counter and planted a little kiss on Dumb Willie's cheek. I knew that my ship had just sailed. Letitia was taken. Letitia was smitten with Dumb Willie.
And to add insult to injury Willie was wearing second hand clothes.
I always wondered how it felt to be "giddy with independence."
DeleteNow I almost know.
Ahhh, what a story. Poor hero of this story.
DeleteA little something from me.

ReplyDeleteThey ganged up on me, even Oblivio hairdresser – not satisfied only with messing up my hair majorly that last time, he took a stab at ruining my life as well. But it’s Henry and Melvin I’m really cut up about.
DeleteFirst Henry and Melvin fall out. Then two seconds later, all that vehemence about going it solo if no-one else is interested etc etc vanishes into thin air. Mel tries to insidiously win Henry over through the backdoor, thinking I would grease the hinges. Only he is much mistaken if he thinks I am a backdoor, not for him, not for Henry, not for anyone. I made that plain. I also explained, in detail, over and over again why this ackee line wouldn’t work, but would the pair of them listen? A men’s cosmetic line based on a fruit that smells like scrambled eggs? I mean, seriously? I told Henry I’d have nothing to do with it. Money, unlike ackee, doesn’t grow on trees, have they noticed?
I don’t know how Mel convinced Henry. Hang on. Maybe I do. All you have to do is to somehow hint Henry’s being a stick-in-the-mud and letting the old boys’ club down and that’s it, easy as a pie. I saw them hurtling off together and magic! When Henry came back he’d lost the hang-dog look and was singing around the house like a tone deaf nightingale. I had my suspicions, but kept a very neutral face as I asked him the reasons for this sudden inexplicable cheerfulness. Oh nothing, nothing, glad to be home, he said. I was a treat for sore eyes with the new hairstyle, he said. Yeah, right. Pull the other one.
I found out later, much later, when everything had gone belly up, they had convinced that Oblivio hairdresser about the whole ackee caper, how men’s cosmetics were booming and he was missing out blah blah blah…. He’d obviously been doing quite well out of his business of ruining women’s hair. I’d changed my salon, went to Sofronie’s after that debacle, feel much safer now. But I saw the men’s section coming up next to the old salon, and then the ackee based cosmetics in the window. Of course I came back fuming. Of course it was bound to fail. When I pointed that out, I mean what man would want his hair smelling of scrambled eggs?
Henry looked acutely uncomfortable, the initial uptake hadn’t exactly been euphoric. But he said, NOTHING VENTURED NOTHING GAINED. No-one was queuing up to have his hair or other body parts perfumed with ackee, however, even months later. Good money down the drain, thank goodness it wasn’t ours. I knew I shouldn’t be, but I was sneakily glad it was Oblivio’s head on the block this time, well, there’s a sort of poetic justice to it, you’ve got to admit.
But do you know what Melvin said? How was a woman with anosmia qualified to give marketing advice on men’s cosmetics, that too based on smell?
Talk about adding INSULT TO INJURY! Honestly, men!
All three parts compiled in my blog today.
Sending you a warm, heartfelt hug from across the hemispheres... <3
