Sunday Selections 500!!!

Sunday Selections #500⭐⭐⭐

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme. This week marks the 500th Sunday Selections since Kim first started the meme - which I find amazing.

Just the same, it is going to be very similar to rather a lot of other Sunday Selections with no special bows and whistles.

It is Spring here.  My city makes a practice of welcoming the season with a festival - Floriade, which has now been running for over thirty years.  Over a million bulbs are planted in a park in the centre of the city, shops pop up and activities abound.  It attracts hundreds of thousands of people.  And, of course, this year it cannot go ahead.

Or not as usual.  So we have been given Floriade Reimagined, and the bulbs and the plantings are spread across the city, in shopping centres, in parks, at churches, at the jail...

I won't see all of the Floriade Reimagined sites but will share those that I do.  I am starting with some of those I spotted in the city centre last week.

I don't know whether the photo above is a Floriade decoration or not.  I suspect not, but liked it and have included it anyway.

These photos were taken inside the city centre.  The paper flowers inside the Floriade sign were created by students from local schools and by community groups.  Gnomes are a feature of Floriade every year and I will keep my eye out for more.

I also liked the decorations on the back of the Floriade sign.

A woman who walks past our home on a regular basis told me that she considers it part of Floriade, which was a lovely thing to say.

So more photos from home - mostly focusing on tulips this week.

Even the chicken wire (put up to deter the cockatoos) hasn't slowed the blooming down.  Last year we got NO tulips in this patch.  The vandals uprooted the lot.

There are more things coming out in the garden every day.  And yes, I am excited by them.  I am also grateful.  It is spring here, but winter made a surprise reappearance.  We had snow on the hills yesterday and today.  The garden appears totally unaffected.  Yay.

I hope your week is packed with excitement and beauty.

  1. Congratulations on five hundred!
It's actually kind of cool that they spread it around the city. Lots of color that way and little gems to search for.

  2. Dear EC
Huge congratulations on five hundred! What a great idea to re-imagine Floriade so that everyone can still enjoy the Spring colour. Your beautiful garden fits right in!
A beautiful splash of gorgeous colour.

  5. Happy 500!! I'm so, so glad and thankful that you are still participating. You are my window to colorful blooms, colorful birds, colorful antics (animals and otherwise) every week.
It's wonderful to see your city adapting Floriade instead of shrugging it off for the year in abandonment. People need the cheer in a rather gloomy time. I fully agree with the walker; your garden is certainly in line with the Floriade theme and I imagine you have many secret admirers. Hugs to you and Lord FussyFur.

    1. River Fairchild: Many thanks. Lord FussyFur is an entirely appropriate name. He is (successfully) messing with my mind again at the moment.
The walker is so intent on getting her daily steps up I was a bit surprised she even noticed the garden. But she does, and it was nice of her to tell me that she enjoys it.

  10. Gratz on 500 and also on the Floiade taking place in this unusual, but good way. I can see why the lady thought your garden a part of the Floriade. Everything is beautiful, and I envy you the Sprins as we head into dreary, rainy autumn. Yesterday we had 42 mm of rain URGH!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Charlotte (MotherOwl): 42mm of rain overnight? We virtually never get that amount - and often don't get that much in a month. I hope your autumn has some bright patches. It is one of my favourite seasons here.

  11. Laurie: I really liked the wheelbarrows too. There are quite a number of them in the city and I think they look great.

  12. The chicken wire worked with the cockatoos. You have some beautiful blooms. What a lovely way for the city to celebrate spring. The wheelbarrows full of blooms are my favourites!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Marie Smith: The chicken wires HAS mostly worked well this year. We lost some plants before we put it down and the vandals have snipped some plants off as they came through, but they have allowed some to bloom. I like the wheelbarrows too.

  30. Hi EC - how delightful to see ... Floriade have made a wonderful display for all residents to see and each day more will bloom and open further. It'll be gorgeous walking around the city centre ... lucky 400,000 residents. Love the little bees, the tulips, the poppies, hyacinths, primulas ... what a delightful spread - especially the yellow wheelbarrow.

Congratulations on 500*** ... and only ? 3 *** ... definitely should be more ... but what a generous neighbour to say your garden delights many too ... and could well be embraced into the Floriade exhibits.

Wonderful to see EC - so pleased for you ... and for us as we start to hunker down into autumn and winter ... take care and enjoy Spring a-coming ... Hilary

  34. Floriade seems like an exceptionally wonderful annual even and I am glad that COVID has not managed to ruin it totally. I am quite sure you were very happy when the person who walks past your home says that she considers your garden to be part of the festival. High praise indeed. I will telegraph to the cockatoos to exercise restraint and not decapitate any of your plants, but as you know they don't always listen!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. David M. Gascoigne: Of course the cockatoos don't listen. I noticed that the Floriade Reimagined bed closest to home spent some weeks under netting and assume that the vandals triggered it.
And yes, Floriade is a delightful annual fiesta and I am glad it is (sort of) going ahead.

  67. Nice to see some spring colours on a rainy evening in England. A pity that these events can't go ahead as normal this year, though it's an excellent idea to spread it out around the city so everyone can enjoy at least a little of it.

  69. I have an ambition, which will never be fulfilled, to follow Spring around the world so that I am always living in Spring. Perhaps if I buy a camper van I could attempt it... but I won't. Autumn is sending its chilly darkening warnings of its close companion Winter being on its way here. I wonder if I could persuade my wife to sell the house and buy a camper van...

    1. Andrew R. Scott: We have quite a lot of 'grey nomads' here who do follow the seasons. They tend however to follow summer, a season I would avoid. Perhaps I could head in the opposite direction?

  70. It's lovely that the even was "reimagined" and spread out alll over town. The result is so beutiful and uplifting. I love so many flowers, and tulip is one of them.

  73. I'm so glad the snow didn't affect the growth. These pictures are stunning. I love that your city does this. It's nothing short of amazing. Also, I'm so grateful you're going into warm weather while I go into cooler weather. It helps me appreciate it that much more!! Thank you for sharing the beauty with us.

    Warmly,

  75. Happy 500th! Your flowers are beautiful, and I'm glad the chicken wire is working this year. Even though I know the critters are just doing what critters do, it's still an unhappy day when we go out in the morning to discover they've vandalized the garden. I hope you'll be able to enjoy Floriade virtually!

    1. Diane Henders: I suspect I would mind less if the vandals ate the plants they behead, shred and/or destroy.
I am hoping to enjoy a few more mini Floriades in the flesh. Really hoping for it.

  78. Oh my. It looks more like Spring than Fall. But I guess it is in your part of the world. Here, the flowers and mostly gone, even here in the sub tropics. Mother Nature just seems to know.

  79. Is it that time again? How lovely, even though it is a lot different this year. I still have all the Floriade magnets you sent me on my fridge and every day I enjoy them. That gnome seriously looks like he's on speed or some other hallucinating drug. I love how the tulips grow through the chicken wire. I hope those sassy birds leave them alone this year.

    1. Carola Bartz: It is indeed that time - though no fridge magnets this year. Or I don't think there are any. I am glad you are still enjoying yours. The birds have (so far) let a LOT more bulbs flower this year. For which I thank them.
