Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.
Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post

Just after Floriade Reimagined I had an appointment with an exercise physiologist in a town centre near home. I went in early hoping that the Floriade blooms hadn't been uprooted and given (as is the custom) to nursing homes and hospitals. I got lucky.
And then to our gardenjungle. Many years ago now a woman traveling on a bus with me told me 'you can keep a garden alive by watering it, but they need rain to grow'. We have had more rain this spring than I have seen in many a year and the truth of what she told me is very evident.
And because I am obsessional, some photos of individual blooms which are delighting me.

DeleteOh I miss my Pom Pom tree....sadly it ‘collapsed’ one year and never recovered from the drastic pruning by The Golfer.
ReplyDeleteDon’t talk to me about rain......we had enough yesterday to fill our own personal dam. The garden loved it....well the bits that weren’t flooded did and the plants that weren’t demolished by the heavy pounding from about!

Cathy: I love our snowball bush (which is the name I know it by). This one spends much of its year largely hidden but comes into glory each year with the yellow banskia rose which largely conceals it. The conjunction of white and yellow blooms is lovely.

Alexia: I feel for you. Himself can be charitably described as a complete toad in convalescence. He believes he is recovering MUCH faster than he is, and acts accordingly. I can see the opposite being equally difficult for the watcher/care giver.

River Fairchild: The vandals were more restrained this year. Spoilt for choice? They did do some ripping and tearing but were unable to lay waste to nearly as much as they have done in other years. Diane Henders: Thank you. Most of that splash of white is a May bush, but there are also some white lilacs there. They are blooming well, and the scent is delightful.

ReplyDeleteStrayer: That is a callistemon, known as bottle brush. The tree they are on, will soon be covered in them. The native birds (and insects love them). And I do too.

DeleteYour garden appeals to me in so many ways. A little wildness, a little randomness is always pleasing, and the sheer bust of colour is uplifting. I enjoy this much more than a manicured rectilinear garden. And I am sure all those wonderful parrots and cockatoos do too. I hope they visit often.

And this year the sulphur crested vandals have done less damage than they have in other years. Less damage but definitely not none. They are still welcome and their are plenty of plantings for the less destructive nectar eaters as well.

DeleteI have been loving seeing the autumnal fireworks on your side of the world. It is one of the highlights of the blogosphere that I can enjoy two seasons simultaneously. And, when our summer heat comes I will look at snowy pictures with very real relief.

neena maiya (guyana gyal): I think rain is better on at least two fronts. It contains nitrates and it doesn't contain the chemicals our tap water has been treated with. The garden loves it - and so do I. We very, very rarely get enough and this year has been a delightful exception.

ReplyDeleteSandra Cox: Thank you. They are indeed roses and those were the first I picked this year. The red one was a simply glorious smell. The white one has none. The white one (and a few others) were bought by himself. I think a rose without a scent is a tragedy, pretty though they can be.

DeleteYour garden is beautiful, seriously beautiful. I love my place but the 'garden' at the moment is struggling with way too much water and areas of long grass that I can't mow without bogging the mower. Outside my window are correas and long purple flags that are looking sweet among the weeds. Though the finches and Crimson Rosellas love the grass seeds, which is a plus. A magpie has just sat on my outdoor seat to look at me as I write to you, how comical!
ReplyDeleteKim: Too much water is something our garden has never experienced, though I am well aware of the damage it can do. There are a lot of birds reveling in the growth here too. And my partner has mowed the lawn more often this spring than he did for all of last year. It is looking seriously shaggy again now (but is too damp to be dealt with). Or so he tells me.

For the first time in many years, I think I'm gonna have to plant a bunch of tulip bulbs. Seeing them sprout and bloom next spring would be such a vibrant image of hope. (And pretty, too!)

DeleteI think I just figured out the perfect life ... spring and summer in the USA and spring and summer in Australia. Why did it take me so long to see that! Your pictures are beautiful and I long for the fresh spring air ... we are headed into winter already. We have had two light snows but our temperatures are below freezing most mornings (early for that,yes? ... climate change?) We are not doing Halloween this year. Our state is having another Covid spike (what happens when your Government denies it's existence and refuses to take steps to control it) so we have to keep our heads down. I still have to go out to shop, but I wear double masks, eye coverings and gloves. I look like a freak, but hopefully it will keep me alive :) Stay well, Sue and be safe ...

Yes, you are very lucky that the Floriade flower has not been uprooted. I think Floriade flowers look a lot like tulips, don't you?
