Sunday Selections #515

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme.  I am continuing to focus on public art - this week close to home.

These are all from an indigenous drop in centre (and the public benches near it) beside our local shopping centre.  The building has been heavily and I think beautifully decorated.  Sadly it has also been desecrated and defaced - which is a rarity here.  I didn't take photos of the most damaged walls - which had also had holes kicked in them.  I cannot help wondering whether the celebration of our first peoples had something to do with the destruction.

Nearby (on the police youth club) a very different culture was on display.

Both brighten the landscape - but my preference is for the indigenous art.

I have also continued to delight in the early morning.

Needless to say I have also been in the garden (our eight foot sumo lilies are in bloom) but I will share/inflict those photos on you some other week.

I hope your week is filled with colour and delight.

  1. Eight foot lillies! I want to see.

My favorite here is the platypus. They don't do much. (Ha ha...you may not understand that reference. It's from a kids' show about a family with a pet platypus who is a secret agent. Phineas and Ferb. Ever heard of it?)

  3. My older daughter would love the turtle painting, as she's really into them.

Personally I love Bugs Bunny with his cap on. :D

  4. Hi EC...there are too many brainless idiots around. What pleasure those idiots get from defacing property etc., beats me. I just don't understand their mindset...I never will.

Wonderful artwork to inspire good thoughts and feelings.

I hope the coming week treats you most kindly, EC...take good care...cuddles to Jazz. :)

  7. Dear EC
The indigenous art is beautiful - such a shame some people can't leave anything alone! These artworks do brighten up the surroundings immensely.
Have a good week and stay safe.
    Best wishes

  8. I love the Aboriginal or Aboriginal styled artwork. It is rather a shame about the tagging.

  9. You know, when you see art on the side of a building here, it's usually crap. Yours are well done and tasteful.

  10. The indigenous art is excellent - I love these beautifully painted images! Not so keen on the other stuff, especially as it hasn't put the taggers off...
I can't wait to see the lilies - 2 and a half metres is seriously tall.
Enjoy your garden and have a good week, EC.

  11. Some art does live on for centuries, some not.
Oh, and nice to see you, Sue.

  12. I also like the platypus best--- although Bugs Bunny is cool. The vandalizing? After this past Wednesday here, nothing surprises me.

  13. Hey Beautiful Soul. The indigenous art is so beautiful! I am sorry it has been defaced in some areas! So sad! The other walls are cute! Gorgeous morning pictures! Big Hugs!

  15. Thanks for the wonderful photos. I do love that indigenous art, too. I cannot believe some people need to desecrate the art of others. Sending you lots of hugs just for being you. :-)

  16. The murals are wonderful but it's sad that some has a need to destroy.
Bring on the photos of your Sumo giant lilies. I can't wait. I need a flower fix right now.
Have a safe and pleasant week.
    Hugs, Julia

  17. I like the indigenous art a good deal. I like the representation of so many sorts of creatures.

  18. I love the indigenous art :) The cartoon characters are also very nice to look at. Sumo lilies? I hope they aren't large enough to spread their pollen this far.

  19. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL. CHARITABLY SPEAKING I FEEL WOEFUL. I WILL RESPOND TO EMAILS/READ POSTS IN A DAY OR SO

  20. It's lovely that your area supports art this way, i also prefer the indigenous works, but i can admire the others.

The sky is a lovely artwork of its own, never the same twice.

    My photos are over here.

  21. I very much enjoy your photos, and walking along with you & Jazz.

  22. Most of the paintings look nice and neat. They were probably painted with permission. (edit, spelling)

  23. I'm a fan of all mural paintings - tagging NOT included - everything that brings colours and joy to bare, monochrome walls and fences is welcome.
Those tagging are as far as I konw not thinking anything but "Someone else was here, I got to show them!" Nothing political, personal or racist, sheer "see me, me, me!"
Those early morning photoes are so nice. And eigth foot sumo lilies ... bring them on!

  24. Thank You for the pictures of street art as we would call this. I am a huge fan of this and the art at the indigenous drop in centre is lovely. The indigenous art of Australia has very distinct characteristics and colours and I have a wallet with this interesting art form. I hope the younger generations continue to appreciate and learn your country's indigenous art. It will be sad if it is forgotten. Some folks say graffiti is a nuisance but I respect graffiti artists and think they is real talent in graffiti.

  26. The indigenous art, filled with images of the natural world, is very pleasing indeed. It's too bad that vandalism and senseless damage happens, but it is an issue in most major cities around the world. Maybe it is a way that the dispossessed fight back against a society in which they feel they have no stake.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm sorry you feel woeful, I hope a little time off is all you need.
I also prefer the indigenous art but I can appreciate the skill in both.

    Have a good week, EC!

  28. I wish we had more art in our town, to look at. I won that beautiful photo at a charity auction, that hangs in my bedroom and I love it. Actually I didn't win it, but someone else who did, knew I wanted it badly, and gave it to me. It's so peaceful to look at and I treasure it. The art in your city is just very wonderful to see.

  29. Hi EC - the lilies must be glorious ... so wonderful ... to see your garden burst to its fullness right now - enchanting and warming the gardener's heart. Our daffs are coming up ... and I expect the crocuses, snowdrops etc are sending their heads up to bring us light and love as they nod in the breezes.

Beautiful indigenous art - totally agree with you ... stunning art works - and aren't people destructive - sad, but true. I'd love to see those at some stage ... I can dream!! Take care and have a peaceful week ... with thoughts and hugs -Hilary

  30. Me gusta el arte y sin lugar a dudas el arte callejero bien gestionado, embellece las ciudades, siempre que sea en lugares autorizados para embellecer sus muros, será la admiración de todos los transeúntes. Feliz año 2021!

  31. I like art and, without a doubt, well-managed street art beautifies cities, as long as it is in places authorized to beautify its walls, it will be the admiration of all passers-by. Happy 2021!

  32. Some graffiti is actually very artistic. There is a tunnel in London that has become a haven for artists and they paint some really cool stuff there. I should take a photo next time I'm down there (could be years though the way things are going).

    :o)

    Cheers

  34. I now consciously seek art in my little city. It is not as artistically decorated as yours. I love visiting your city via your photos.
Have a wonderful week. Enjoy your garden.

  35. From the Australian bloggers I follow, my impression is public art is important in Australia and is everywhere. How wonderful!

  36. I love the art of the first people so much better than cartoons. I also love your sky photos. every day.

  37. Thanks for showing us your public art. I love the indigenous art, too.

  38. I really love these small murals. They are so joyful.

  39. The art in your community is beautiful but your sky photos are amazing. Looking forward to seeing your garden photos. Take care and be safe my friend.

  40. Yes, you're right it's very sad when others destruct and deface places they need to show respect, but those kinds of folks haven't learned their lessons yet. Still, it's delightful to see the artwork! Thanks for sharing it with us, and enjoy a safe and joyous week ahead!

  41. I love the indigenous art, too! Such talent. And I will never understand what drives people to deface or destroy property for no reason at all.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Enjoyed all the artwork. I have always been fascinated by the dot artwork of indigenous people.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My preference also for the indigenous art - so beautiful! Thank you. Eight foot lilies sound spectacular...waiting.

  44. Aww, that gorgeous Indigenous art...how could anyone destroy it like that? It is such sacrilege 🙁
I am becoming increasingly shocked by the unforgivable acts some people are committing in recent times...what IS happening to the human race?!
The other art is striking too, in a different kind of way...and I love your sky photos!!😊😊
Also looking forward to seeing your flower ones...

Hope you are doing ok, my dear friend!

Sending much love and hugs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  45. I wish I had realized about this before. I love the indigenous art. It's sad that beautiful murals are being desecrated. Some say they are only temporary anyway, and should never be considered permanent. I disagree. The artist has taken so much time to create the work and it should never be desecrated. After all, who would choose to damage a Monet or DaVinci? It's the same principle, just a different canvas. These are all gorgeous, but my favorite is the parrot that has been badly tagged.

  46. I would love to see those sumo lilies..
Public art always makes me smile.

  47. What a gorgeous art walk you had! I love that Aang from the Last Airbender popped up in one of the murals. Very cute!

  48. That is one of the many things I love about Oz, the art is everywhere.

The indigenous art is my favourite, it flows with nature. Why would anyone want to vandalise such beautiful art? I hope they can repair the damage.

  49. I enjoyed seeing your photographs of the local art.
    Amazing sky photographs too.
Here in the UK we are experiencing cold, grey days, it would be lovely to see some sunshine soon!

    Take care, my good wishes.

    All the best Jan

  50. I am late to read and comment, EC, but you know how I am feeling right now. How wonderful that your city has so much outside art to enjoy. The photos are great and early morning shot is perfect. I hate that some people desecrate the art. Why are people so vengeful and hateful these days? Or has it always been that way. Please feel better soon. Hugs to you, my friend.

  52. precious C hope having blessed days in new year
this is delightful art indeed :) just made my day

i am sorry that you found some art damaged ,just like beautiful minds who flourish their surroundings with their inner beauty there also exist destructive minds who find fun in destroying their inner ugliness indeed
    loved the serene landscape too
have safe healthy days ahead my friend!

  53. It's always wonderful to see the beauty that many take the time to create, but it's a sad sight to see it destroyed in an instant. Happy, Happy New Year and many hugs, RO

  59. I can understand that you delight in the indigenous art - so do I. I am saddened that some of this art has been damaged. It seems that intolerance and hate crimes are spreading out all over the world more and more. My hopes that 2021 might be better than 2020 have already been smashed to pieces last week anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That said - the images of the indigenous art are very inspiring and I want to create something like that!

  61. I wish we had more visible art around here. Can't wait to have those sumo lily photos inflicted upon me :)
