Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

We were scheduled to see a Supermoon this week. A pink supermoon. I was really looking forward to it. On 'the night' I was wearing my supervisor/support hat for Lifeline. I couldn't get out to see the moon but my shift was due to finish around midnight, so I promised myself a treat. When I had completed my last call and any necessary paperwork I was going to go out, camera in hand.
Big sigh. When I went outside cloud had obscured the sky, the stars and the moon. However, I am an early riser and a late night doesn't change that, so I trotted outside just before dawn the next morning. The pinkness had gone, but so had the cloud and the moon was still there to delight me.
I know that many of you are enjoying Spring at the moment, but we are in Autumn. A season I love. The arboreal fireworks amaze me each and every year. This year I am also delighting in some late bloomers.
So come wander with me.
A few days after my walk we went to one of my city's lookouts. There was hazard burning underway so the skies are a bit hazy, but there was still colour to be seen. Much of Australia's native vegetation is evergreen, but my city has planted LOTS of deciduous trees.
I hope that whatever your season, and where ever you are, there is colour and joy in your week.

ReplyDeleteAs we are just welcoming new growth, I was so impressed with the beauty of your autumn photos. It brought back great memories of autumn before the lockdown last year. The colors are so rich and impressive. And I am another person who loves to see bottlebrush trees. They are too delicate to live in MY part of the world, but I sure enjoyed seeing yours. You certainly live in a beautiful city and autumn seems to bring out that beauty, too.

DeleteWe have a few bottle brush trees in our yard (not blooming at the moment) and I love them. The autumnal colours are a joy though. I think that much of my city IS beautiful and I am glad to showcase it.

DeleteThe autumn colours are lovely. Our trees are only just beginning to leaf out after winter, although I hear that the cherry trees are in bloom down in the city parks.... not quite warm enough for that here yet. The bottle brush is a really interesting plant, wish they grew here. I forgot to go out and look at the super pink moon, but I think it was cloudy that night.
ReplyDeleteShammickite: I look forward to the autumn foliage every year. We are often too dry for a good display but we had a moist summer and are getting a delayed bonus. Our skies were clear early for the supermoon, but clouded over when it was supposedly at its peak.

Alexia: I was disappointed not to see the moon at its height, but grateful that the early morning was clear. The bottlebrush at home haven't had a second flush (which I would welcome). The bees here are revelling in dahlia blooms.

DeleteWe face east so we had a great view of the rising moon. Apparently it is called pink for another reason than it being pink. Lots of red. They may not be local vegetation but I love our deciduous trees.

ReplyDeleteThe protea … is magnificent and 10 ½ years ago I wrote about the Banksian Nut – Joseph Banks had the genus named after him …
My uncle had one of their nuts – that generated the interest. And had a gorgeous Lady Banks’ Rose – clambering over their veranda … every year it was gorgeous, reminding me of South Africa – where I first encountered its beauty.

DeleteThat moon is fabulous! And your autumn trees are so much more colourful thain mine. Almost all our leaves just go brown in autumn. Only "imprted" trees do some of the red/orange/yellow fireworks. I like Spring best, just now with its myriads of green colours.

DeleteI'm glad you were still able to see the moon and get such great photos! I was so excited to see it but it was cloudy here in Brisbane too. I could see the beautiful glow from behind the clouds in little gaps and knew it would be amazing but I stood out there for a while and the gaps didn't seem to move close enough to the moon for me to see it. A little disappointing, I should have thought of looking again in the morning!

DeleteYour moon pics were beautiful! I suspect that we ahve the same climate, just opposite times of year. Hubs and I just hit the gardens to get all out annual plants for spring/summer today. We did all the flower boxes, and later this week will do all the edging. Luckily for my wallet, we have a lot of perennials we have planted, and the annuals just get added in each year for extra color.

Una pena lo de los incendios pero, a pesar de todo se ve perfectamente en tus imágenes ese valle donde está asentada tu linda ciudad.

DeleteI can see fr your pictures that Autumn is here. The beautiful flowers have been replaced by more woody dry plants. Autumn leaves have so many different shades. We have a smaller version of your bottle brush here in M'sia, so the shrub is called powder puff.

DeleteHappy belated birthday. This week has been a bit like the parson's egg - good in parts, but the good parts were excellent.
I was just about to comment on the moon and the colours when I saw your 'parson's egg' comment above and it rang a bell that I'm now going to look up as the origin of the phrase is avoiding my memory!
ReplyDeleteKim: I grew up with that phrase, and had forgotten/not realised that it isn't in common use. It seems to have two meanings. In one, the whole thing (whatever it is) is bad, but politeness comes into play. The other essentially refers to a 'mixed bag'. I was using it in the second sense - though I suspect the first is more accurate. A bag egg has no good parts.
DeleteI didn't actually see the moon in person that night, but a few friends sent pics and they were quite stunning. I sure wish we were in Autumn right now, in hopes of cooler weather, but we're sure headed towards a steamy summer very soon which, as you know, is not my fave(lol) Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous and colorful. ReplyDeleteSnowbrush: We do have liquid amber here - and I learned (from you I believe) that they are also known as sweet gums. We have four in our yard and I am delighting in them.
