Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme.This week is again a bit same old, same old.
The possum has come back to visit us again (and is still staying out of our roof space). The apple he is eating is one we put out for the birds (but we don't begrudge him enjoying it). People with apple trees in the area will probably be happier if he is eating with us...
Then to Odie. The poor kittens were very sick for quite a while, and Odie was the sicker of the two. They finally seem to have picked up (and moved away from the one step forward, two steps back dance). Odie is enjoying playing in a shopping bag here.
I am finishing with something completely different. Our roadside mowing is way, way behind. And this week as I gazed at the dandelions I realised I would never have seen the golden carpet if our local council was up to date.
He is enjoying the apple.

ReplyDeleteRian: Our possums (like so many Australian animals) is different to those found elsewhere. It is wonderful that the final lot of antibiotics worked for the kittens.

River Fairchild: Thank you. On all counts. Our sweaty season is generally well and truly here by now, but seems to be delayed. I am not missing it at all.
DeleteI think that roadside mowing should stop altogether. Those ribbons of greenspace provide habitat for all manner of creatures, and goodness knows we have eliminated so much. I am glad to see that the possum is still paying you a visit and that the kittens finally seem to be on the mend. It has been a good week in your house.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: As you might remember my city has a lot of green space (though the current government is diminishing it). I take your point though. Some mowing needs to be done for road safety purposes (sometimes the grass is over four feet high, but we do need to maintain our greenspace).

Dandelion in German is called 'Löwenzahn' (liontooth). It can't bite mowers, though.
Sean Jeating. I did know about liontooth. While mowers do bite them so do the sulphur crested vandals when they find them in our 'lawn'.
DeleteDo brush tails get into roofs? You would ceiling thumping as well as cat made floor thumping. In our last house we started putting apples out for possums until cats learnt of the nightly possum visits. The result was not pretty, so we stopped interfering with the nature of the universe.
ReplyDeleteUnmown grass seems to be an Australia wide problem and like you, I have noticed a lot of grasses in bloom.
Andrew: They can and do get into the roof space. As my last Sunday Selections detailed sometimes with awful results. I 'think' our roof is secure. I hope so.

I know people who put all kinds of dandelion killer on their lawns. They probably hate me because I encourage the dandelions., I think the parking areas are fabulous.

DeleteI try and avoid poison. It is a totally indiscriminate killer and takes out things that were not targeted - and their deaths are often nasty.
It looks like all is well with the kitties and it puts a smile on my face. The bush possum is enjoying the apple and the bees are enjoying the dandelions and all seems to be well in your with nature in your world. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteOur son and 5 year old granddaughter arrive from Barcelona on Wednesday, so we are pretty excited! They will be here for a month (daughter-in-law is staying with her aged parents in Italy, as they are both very frail).

DeleteYou take me back to my township days. Ohio township law said the first mowing must be before June 20th, the last before (I think) October 20. Don't get between our super and his tractor when mowing was mandated.

ReplyDeleteI am so pleased to hear the kittens are improving - it has been a horrible time for you all. I miss not having a cat here, even though our visitor cat is still visiting and making himself at home, it's not the same. In the UK, the councils are only cutting the very edge off the roadside, so we see more wild flowers and there is more area for wildlife. It is lovely to see. The possum photos are fascinating too.

I like your psooum too, much nicer that the four-legged menaces eating our apples (Rats! - we live in the countryside, people - and we - have horses, chicken, apple trees and so on - I put up traps, and the communal rat-catcher does the same, mine are the best).

Snowbrush: Our possums and your opossums are indeed different beasts. Our roadside grasses have reached four and five feet tall over our very wet spring.

kestrel here. I am glad they did not cut down the dandelions, blast of gold by the road. The possum is enjoying his little treasure, I hope he gets more apples. I read that possums ply dead when they are really scared. Your possum was probably too hungry to be scared. Glad to hear Odie is on the road to recovery, has lovely stripes

DeleteWhen I was in college, I had to do volunteer time for an environmental science class. I chose the local conservacy and spent a semester taking care of Patty the o'possum. Her mother had been hit and killed by a car and she was alive in the tummy. She was grown when I met her and very nice. The only thing initially a bit of a startle to me was her tail hanging down my shoulder, but I got used to it after awhile too. :) Glad you have progress with the cats!! And here's to the Dandelions!! They were my favorite 'flower' as a youth!

ReplyDeleteThe dandelions look so cheerful, it truly is beautiful! I do see David's point, but I also always have wildfires in mind when I see areas that are not maintained. If it's not mowed and dries up, it becomes fuel for fires. And that is something we can happily do without. It's difficult to find a good middle ground.
I'm glad that the kittens are doing better now and I hope it keeps like that. Odie looks very sweet and a bit mischievous.
Carola Bartz: Apologies are not necessary. You are welcome whenever you find time to stop by. I hear you on the fire risk - and five foot high dry grass is certainly that.
