Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. This week I am returning to my fondness for public (and semi public) art.
My city has often been described as 'a good sheep station, ruined'. There are a number of statues of sheep about. This small flock lives at a suburban shopping centre. They are loved by their local community and decorated for Christmas.
I was at that shopping centre to see one of my doctors. Which is where the semi public art comes in. One wall of the reception area is devoted to a feature wallpaper.
I find it fascinating and (with permission) have taken some detailed shots to show you why.
Isn't it a lovely addition to what is often a very boring space?
I hope you find things to intrigue you this week too.
Hi EC - love the sheep, but particularly love the wallpaper - reminds me of a few artworks I've seen - but I'd love to know its origin - should you know or be able t find out. Yes - I'm finding rather a lot of intriguing things to keep me occupied, apart from normal life - cheers and with thoughts to you - Hilary
ReplyDeleteThe wallpaper might be based on Ernst Haeckl (1834 - 1919) ... the German scientist, philosopher and artist ??
DeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: THANK YOU. If this wallpaper isn't based on this talented man's work I will eat my hat. I love that he (and so many others) see art in nature. I have often said that nature is THE best artist - and her galleries are superb too.
DeleteWhat a great work of "wallpaper art"! So much to look at while you're waiting for an appointment.
ReplyDeleteGreat sheep images!
Gini and I continue to brave the heat and humidity so you don't have to!
Wally Jones: Thank you and Gini. We have a frost this morning and I am loving it - and I hope you are also loving your heat and humidity - or at least coping with it.
DeleteIt's nice to have something interesting to look at while waiting for an appointment. That you have with the wallpapaper. I like the flock of sheep, too. I'm sure they're adorable when decorated for the holidays.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Janie Junebug: Since Covid hit, the usual magazines (often very old magazines) no longer appear in waiting rooms. I much prefer this wall paper though. I will try and remember to take and post photos of the decorated sheep later in the year.
DeleteNo danger of getting bored waiting for that doctor!
ReplyDeleteMolly: None and the surgery is pretty good on the time front too. Win/win.
DeleteI agree. It is a lovely addition. : )
ReplyDeleteCaterina: Isn't it just? And so different to the normal doctor's surgery decor.
DeleteThe sheep are amazing.
ReplyDeleteJenn Jilks: There are two more sheep in the shopping centre itself. Which is delightful.
DeleteThe Sheep are excellent, and wallflowers are beautiful, thanks EC.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: Aren't they great? All of it.
DeleteThe iron sheeps are special. These artworks are exquisite and exotic looking.
ReplyDeleteroentare: Thank you. I agree with you on both counts.
DeleteLove the sheep and OMG the wallpaper is superb! I could stare at it for hours with a smile on my face. Talk about major distraction instead of nervously waiting to be called. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteRiver Fairchild
River Fairchild: Isn't it amazing? I do look at it and smile every time I go to that surgery. I was surprised (a bit) to see that other people obviously thought I was a bit odd for wandering round with my camera. I care not. I really, really like that wallpaper.
DeleteWhat a wonderful idea - so much better than sitting in a waiting area with nothing but a pile of old magazines to look at! I love the zebra, the rhino, the tiger, the swimmers... so colourful and clever. The sheep will look great when Christmas and New Year come around.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are well, and that the kittens are looking after you, EC. I have had eye surgery recently, and am trying to stop myself reading too much - VERY difficult :)
Take care, and enjoy your garden: spring will be here before we know it!
Alexia: I hope your eye surgery went really, really well. And yes, limited reading would be a big, big challenge.
DeleteThe garden has got away from me here and I need to do a LOT of work. There are already spring flowers in bloom and a lot of weeds. Weeds that are trying to strangle other plants.
The kittens are keeping me busy.
How absolutely delightful! From the adorable sheep to the amazing art you showed here. I love it all, and I am thrilled that you shared it with me, your forever friend. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: Thank you. I am always happy to share the things I see, and even happier when they delight other people as well.
DeleteThe sheep are so intricate - what kind of creative mind looks at a load of chain and turns it into something like that! And what a brilliant idea to have such an interesting wall at the surgery. I can imagine looking at it and making up all kinds of stories. I hope all is well with you.
ReplyDeleteKim: Aren't the sheep clever? I am so very grateful for creative minds. And a big yes to that wall too. The surgery is pretty good on time management, but the time spent waiting isn't dull.
DeleteThat wallpaper is really impressive.
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: I love it - though I couldn't live with it I really enjoy seeing it at the surgery.
DeleteAwe, I adore sheep, and the expression on the first photo is priceless! This artwork is so incredible too, it would be amazing to see them putting it together! Enjoy your week ahead!
ReplyDelete21 Wits: The artist did an excellent job on the sheep didn't they? They make me smille everytime I see them and that wallpaper gives a definite lift to doctors visits.
DeleteLove the sheep art. And, yes, that wallpaper is vibrant!
ReplyDeleteBea: Aren't the sheep great - and they way they have positioned them they look like they are in the country.
DeleteLove the sheep, love the wall paper!
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: I am glad. I do too.
DeleteUsing chains as the sheep's wool is clever. The wallpaper is amazing, almost 3D and I'm sure you could examine it for hours and still not focus on everything.
ReplyDeleteAndrew: The chains are really, really clever aren't they? I have made a number of trips to that surgery recently and keep finding new things in the wallpaper. I think, for example that I will find all the birds and start counting and get distracted.
DeleteI love the creativity of using chains to represent the curly sheep wool. I think they are pretty cool and so is the wallpaper. I'm glad you saw fit to share both these interesting art works.
ReplyDeleteJuly is almost all gone and August is waiting to come in.
How did that happened? Enjoy the cool weather. Here, it's hot and very humid this summer.
Hugs, Julia
Julia: Art lifts my spirits, particularly clever art. Where has this year gone? I am enjoying the cool weather and hope you can escape some of your heat and humidity.
DeleteSheep AND a glorious wallpaper to peruse, thanks EC and I love the description of your city as being ruined without the sheep gallivanting.....
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Wisewebwoman: That description of my city was meant as a criticism - I am glad that it has been turned on its head.
DeleteIt looks like that wallpaper repeats about every two chairs in both directions. You should be able to find all the critter types in a two chair square.
ReplyDeleteMike: Perhaps it is my monkey brain but I kept getting distracted. Which in a doctor's waiting room is fine.
DeleteThere is so much to love in that Henri Rousseau-ish wallpaper. I would never have thought of dressing a zebra in a checked coat. Are you able to find out the name of the artist? The sheeps (I stole that from Clarksons Farm) are wonderful also.
ReplyDeleteFrances: I will ask next time I am in whether they know the artist. Hilary Melton-Butcher (first comment) tracked down an artist who almost certainly inspired this work. And yes, I love the sheeps too.
DeleteI love the wallpaper! It would be great in a childrens playroom, they could learn about the birds and animals in it.
ReplyDeleteThe sheep are great too, the best kind of sheep, no feeding, no shearing and they will never becomes lamb chops and roasts.
River: The sheep don't leave any deposits behind them either. I hadn't thought about a children's playroom, but you are right. I suspect that the animals could cause problems later though. I do love the zebra in his checks.
DeleteAll is lovely that wallpaper it's amazing, and the sheep, some people are so artistic.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D: I do love the work of creative people and both the sheep and the wallpaper qualify don't they?
DeleteLove the sheep, and I suspect the designer of that wallpaper was chewing some very funny beans--- It's great, but... WOW!
ReplyDeleteBill: There is a part of me that would like some of what the designer consumed - so long as it also came with their talent.
DeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteAs with all the comments, I love the sheep too and what a clever use of materials. The wallpaper is fascinating and you can see so much in it. It looks wonderful in the space.
Have a happy and peaceful week.
Best wishes
Ellie
Ellie Foster: The sheep are super clever, and the materials they were made from would have been quite common on sheep stations. I am super impressed at the addition of such an interesting feature wall in the doctor's surgery. You are right, there is a lot in it.
Deletegreat photos love from polang
ReplyDeleteGosia: Thank you.
DeleteThe sheep looks real and the wallpaper is quite amazing. I am glad that you took the pictures, Sue, so that we could share.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: Aren't the sheep well done? Going past on the road they look very real. And yes, the wallpaper IS amazing.
DeleteThe sheep look so realistic, I can't believe they are sculptures. I love the wallpaper with its detailed paintings of animals. You live in a very desirable place.
ReplyDeletegigi-hawaii: Who knew that you could make realistic looking sheep from concrete and chains. I enjoy the wallpaper too - I think it is a excellent antidote to the anxiety/boredom in the doctor's office.
DeleteThat is very clever wallpaper that would absorb and distract a nervous patient! I love the sheep very much. They say so much about your area. Thank you for posting today and for always being a true friend. Aloha!
ReplyDeleteCloudia: I am certainly distracted by the wallpaper. Aren't the sheep gorgeous? There are some further in the shopping area too, which I will post about some day. You post every day which blows my lazy self away.
DeleteMuy interesante, las fotografías que has captado.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo
Miradas desde mi lente: Thank you. Have a great week.
DeleteLove the sheep! The wallpaper is a great one in a public space like that! Have a great week, EC.
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: Both the sheep and the wallpaper give a real lift to a fairly ordinary shopping centre don't they?
DeleteThe wallpaper wall is great... I like it a lot. Thanks for the detailed shots. It is a treat for the eyes and soul.
ReplyDeleteThe sheep are funny - Sheep in a sheep's coat - knitted :-)))
Hug of Viola
Barwitzki: We all need those feasts don't we? I love the way that the hard and unyielding material the sheep are made from looks so soft...
DeleteThe wallpaper is just awesome. I love those sheep statues. I hope you have a wonderful new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteRasmaSandra: Thank you. Both the sheep and the wallpaper brightened my day. You have a great week too.
DeleteIsn't that wallpaper amazing? And the sheep aren't bad either;)
ReplyDeleteHope your day is filled with joy.
Sandra sandracox.blogspot.com
Sandra Cox: I really like them both, and as a beauty addict both gave me smiles. You have a joyful week too.
DeleteBoth are definitely smile worthy:)
DeleteThanks, bud. You have a joyful week too.
Sandra sandracox.blogspot.com
I adore the sheep - what a brilliant use of hard materials to achieve that 'soft fluffy' look! And the wallpaper is fascinating. I wonder if it was a custom design? I imagine it must be calming for people to concentrate on the intricate images instead of simply sitting in the waiting room and (possibly) worrying.
ReplyDeleteDiane Henders: Both are very clever aren't they? I am certainly distracted in that waiting area which is a huge plus.
DeleteAre the sheep made of chains? How very cool.
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a wallpaper like this in our doctors' waiting rooms - it wouldn't be half that boring!
Carola Bartz: The sheep are made of chains and concrete and I think they are great. And yes, the wallpaper is a distinct improvement on out of date and tatty magazines.
DeleteThe wallpaper reminds me of a
ReplyDeleteWimmelbilderbuch. Lovely. Thank you.
Sean Jeating: That is a term I hadn't heard before. Thanks for the link. After I read it I could see exactly what you meant.
DeleteI do like the sheep and that feature wallpaper is amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe weekend whizzed by and here we are in another new week ... I hope it's a good one for you.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. The whole year is whizzing past isn't it? I hope you and Edie have a good week too.
DeleteThe artwork, both the sheep and the wall, is quite fascinating. We simply don't have much public art here, and i think that's a sad thing.
ReplyDeleteMy selections are over here.
messymimi: As you know we have a lot of public art here. I am so very grateful to see it.
DeleteLove all the colors and animals depicted and the sheep gave me a chuckle. Have a good week.
ReplyDeletee: It is hard not to smile when you see the sheep isn't it? I hope you and Lukas have a happy, healthy week.
DeleteThe wallpaper is so interesting. And love all the photos.
ReplyDeleteNas: As I have said, I think it is a wonderful addition to the doctor's waiting room.
DeleteI hope you have a good week ahead, EC....and I hope Batty and Odie are doing fine.
ReplyDeleteLee: Thank you. Sadly we need to take Batty back to the vet. I hope your week is gentle.
DeleteThe wall paper is glorious, I'd put it in my house.
ReplyDeleteAnd sheep almost appear animated.
Have a good week, with lots of beauty!
kylie: I am not certain I could live with that wallpaper but I certainly enjoy it at the surgery. And aren't the sheep great. As usual I will be hunting for beauty - and I will assuredly find it.
DeleteThe zebra has plaid back! And his back says "Mooo!" And the leopard what is on its back, while it stands atop what looks to be a magic mushroom. So your city was a ruined sheep station, eh? Ha. History.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: I hadn't noticed the mooo until you mentioned it - and have no idea what is on the leopard's back. I will check it out next time I go to the doctor.
DeleteThe story is that the sheep station was ruined when my city was built.
You sure find so much to brighten your day when you are out. I love the sheep. They almost look real. There is quite a lot going on in that wall paper that you would probably miss if you didn't take a closer look at.
ReplyDeleteMary Kirkland: Even taking a closer look at it I kept finding things I had missed.
DeleteI am so glad the doctor's office didn't mind you sharing the wallpaper. It's beautiful! Loved those sheep too. Sad but interesting that the sheep station was ruined when the city was built. Very enjoyable Sunday Selection today, thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: I was glad that the receptionist was happy for me to take photos too.
DeleteSadly the comment about a good sheep station ruined was made by people who thought that my city (the capital of our country) should not have been built.
That wallpaper! Wow! I wonder what other designs they have.
ReplyDeleteLux G.: I wonder. Nothing ordinary I suspect.
DeleteI like sheep both as animals in nature and as art figures.
ReplyDeleteThe wallpaper has a sort of fascinating intricacy that might calm the state of mind of people in a doctor's waiting room.
DUTA: I am a fan of sheep too. The wallpaper certainly calmed and distracted my mind, and I hope it benefited other people too.
DeleteThe sheep are so interesting and I can picture them all dressed up near the holidays. :) That wallpaper could be a game- look for the ... So much to keep people thinking and wondering. I would imagine it helps calm patients down because their brains are focused on the art!
ReplyDeleteDMS `Jess: I will try and remember to photograph the sheep in their holiday finery. I really liked the wallpaper and as I said to DUTA. it certainly calmed me.
DeleteThat is a lot of detailing there (even for a wall paper)
ReplyDeleteHaddock: Lots and lots of intricate and beautiful detail.
DeleteHow goes your day, my friend?
ReplyDeleteSandra sandracox.blogspot.com
Sandra Cox: It is early yet (dawn is not here) but it is going to be busy. I am heading into LL before long and will have a student to support and nurture.
DeleteI'm sure the student is in the best possible hands.
DeleteTake special care. Hugs
Sandra sandracox.blogspot.com
Sandra Cox: What a lovely thing to say. The student did well - and will come back which is a win.
DeleteI want one of the sheep! (tentativelytasmanian.blog)
ReplyDeleteTentTas: They are great aren't they?
DeleteIt's a wonderful post with this great sheep and all the gorgeous nature x
ReplyDeleteaussie aNNie: Thank you. I am glad you liked it.
DeleteMe parece muy encomiable el interés que hay por embellecer la ciudad con arte urbano, y el que participen también los centros comerciales. Impresionante el tapiz.
ReplyDeleteUn cordial saludo, amiga.
Manuel: There is public art all over my city and I love to see it. That wallpaper is great isn't it? Have an excellent week.
DeleteI like those sheep very much, but that wallpaper wins the day. I wish I had something so cheerful and interesting to look at while I'm waiting at the doctor's.
ReplyDeleteJohn "By Stargoose And Hanglands:": I totally agree. The wallpaper is a distinct improvement on the usual tired and tatty magazines.
DeleteVery creative sheep art
ReplyDeleteashok: I think these sheep are delightful.
DeleteYou live in such an artsy place. Art is everywhere. Love the sheep. And yes, the wallpaper really does make the wait easier to bear. I'll prolly be back Sunday or so, to see what else you have been up to. xo
ReplyDeleteJC: I do indeed live in an artsy place - for which I am very grateful. Next Sunday Selections will be very low key. Various appointments mean that I haven't been anywhere exciting.
DeleteI'm not sure how I missed this, but it may be because my internet had a major meltdown this week and I had to shut it down and start over again looking for my favorite blogs.
ReplyDeleteThose sheep are amazing, but I really, really LOVE the wallpaper, especially the zebras and rhinos.
Bleubeard and Elizabeth: You are always welcome whenever you come by. I like the sheep too, but agree that the wallpaper is very special indeed.
DeleteI am more than intrigued by that wallpaper. It would entertain company for hours. Thank you for sharing it E.C.
ReplyDeleteGranny Annie: I think it is fascinating and it certainly fills in time while I am waiting to see the doctor.
DeleteHas the artist taken some liberties in that wallpaper or does your country really have those creatures? :) I love the plaid zebra! Take good care of yourself, EC.
ReplyDeletejenny_o: Lots of liberties - and I don't know where the artist comes from. It is definitely fun wallpaper though isn't it?
Delete
