Huge thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh who challenged us last month. This month Wisewebwoman is providing the prompts and they will appear here. Charlotte (MotherOwl) has selected fawn brown as the colour of the month.
This week's prompts are:
- Gnocchi
- Dynamite
- Chariot
- Bucket
- Periwinkle
And/or
- Noticeboard
- Blunt
- Bockety
- Fifty
- Shortbread
As always, have fun.
Her wheelchair was her chariot. Anytime Rachel went down to the beach, despite being bockety on uncertain ground like sand, she ensured she took a bucket with her. In the late afternoon the fawn brown sand stretched for miles and looked empty. It wasn’t. There were Periwinkles in their thousands there, and while they were small they were delicious. To be blunt they were a bit of a pain to winkle out of their shells, but definitely worth the effort. Steamed lightly for three or four minutes they made a feast – particularly when teamed with Grandma Lucia’s delicious potato gnocchi. A dynamite dish.
ReplyDeleteFollowed by home-made shortbread there was a feast in store for them tonight. A fitting way to celebrate fifty years of friendship.
Satisfied with her days labours Rachel put a line through the only item on the noticeboard ‘Dinner’ and settled down with a glass of wine to wait for Tim.
Love it! And I got to learn a new word, too: bockety. A win-win! :-)
DeleteDiane Henders: Bockety is new to me too - and describes me very, very well.
DeleteVery well done, a warmhearted story. Nice job!
DeleteHappy Hanukkah, EC. Love to you.
PS This is Rawknrobyn - probs with blogger, it seems.
DeleteOh well done, EC, I loved Rachel and the story. And so glad you fitted in the Irish word so nicely. It's quite a perfect word, isn't it to describe us some days.

A lovely story, and delicious, too.
DeleteSuch a good mini-story, and I wish I had some chicken and gnocchi soup.
DeleteWell done EC, a lovely story and now I have an idea what bockety means.
DeleteWell done, Sue. Rachel seems like the kind of person we'd all like to know.
DeleteNow I get here and see you too wove eating periwinkles and gnocchi into your story - loved it ... so pleased - great minds think alike! Cheers Hilary
DeleteGosh, can you eat those! Great story.
DeleteHere's mine, Episode 9 of the story of Edward and Dahlia, taking off in directions I had not control over.
ReplyDelete----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dahlia was taking her turn at the artists’ cooperative gallery. It was only once every two weeks and she enjoyed meeting the public and discussing the different pieces put together by the locals. She pulled the old flyers from the enormous bockety old noticeboard and smiled at the blunt messages of some looking for work or assignments. There must be fifty of them. She was thinking of dinner that night, gnocchi, one of her favourites, along with the bucket of fresh periwinkles bought at the wharf this morning. With a garlic sauce it would be a dynamite combination.
Her Scottish mother had dropped off some of her special shortbread the night before and she put a plateful on the counter for customers to enjoy.
As she turned around to hang some new pieces on the walls, she couldn’t believe her eyes when Edward appeared, in his fawn brown get-up, a painting under his arm, waving at her as if nothing had happened a week ago.
“I’m joining this group!” he said excitedly, ”They told me you’d give me some training today!”
“I don’t know what fantastical chariot you rode in on,” she said icily, “And I don’t care. But that is not happening Edward, please leave.”
Excellent use of the words. Of course, we knew Edward wasn't going to leave easily.
DeleteBe gone, Edward.
DeleteNice chapter, but I do hope Edward isn't going to cause any trouble.
DeleteWisewebwoman: Edward is showing some worrying signs that he is becoming a stalker...
DeleteIt seems that somewhere along the way we have all known an Edward, and are determined to be rid of him.
DeleteHi WWW - this a great continuation of your story - I hope Edward gets the message ... unlikely I suspect - cheers Hilary
DeleteOkay, I'm off to work on it. But that's okay, I'm always a little off.
ReplyDeleteMy story will be over here,
Deletemessymimi: I look forward to your story - and would dispute your self description.
DeleteDYNAMITE is the name of my friend's fashion company. I suggested it to her, as I thought it implied clothing of explosive nature.
ReplyDeleteShe had several name suggestions on her NOTICEBOARD, yet she decided to accept mine.
As a 'thank you', she and her husband invited me to a 'bite' and a movie afterwards. The husband, aged FIFTY, made an italian GNOCCHI sort of pasta, and cooked some PERIWINKLES which I refused as I don't eat such sea food. The SHORTBREAD cookies offered as dessert, were delicious.
We then went to see the famous movie " CHARIOTS of fire" about two athletes with olympic dreams.
On the way back, the car seemed BOCKETY. Luckily a friend of the couple happened to be nearby and was able to help. He bought a little BUCKET with various tools, and managed to fix the problem. Not without making some BLUNT remarks about the overall state of the car.
DUTA: This is great - and Dynamite is a wonderful name for a fashion label. I like the description of the home mechanics blunt words too. It was ever thus.
DeleteExcellent use of the prompts and a very good story.
DeleteHi DUTA - yes good use of the words ... into a delightful story - I enjoyed the movie ... cheers Hilary
DeleteThey didn't have gnocchi to the bucket heads castle so they blew in periwinkle powder to put them to sleep and lit off a chariot full of dynamite to get in the gate.
ReplyDeleteMike: Captain Succinct wins the day?
DeleteIn case anyone missed the pun, go to "https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&sca_esv=c30c27677fd05ae4&sca_upv=1&q=Gnocchi+pronunciation" to see how Gnocchi is pronounced.
DeleteVery punny!
DeleteCrumpets ... a chariot full of dynamite ... well I hope they survived - cheers Hilary
DeleteAt two fifty PM, I put a blunt notice on the noticeboard about the bockety shortbread served at lunch.
ReplyDeleteMike: Bad shortbread is a crime.
DeleteIf they mess up shortbread, they can't cook at all!
DeleteOoh! I like these prompts. -might be sparked to write a wee something. I'll be reading the entries, to be sure. :)
ReplyDeleteBea: Thank you for reading - and I really, really hope you will write something too.
Deletebockety??
ReplyDeleteRiver: Unsteady, unwieldy. I had to look it up too.
DeleteI'll have my story on my blog on Friday.
ReplyDeleteRiver: I look forward to it - as I do every week.
DeleteIf I had lived back in time PERIWINKLE I would need for some medicine, first of all I’d eat some GNOCCHI then off I’d go with my BUCKET to put them in but first of all I’d call into watch the CHARIOT race which was just excellent looking back on it, DYNAMITE to be exact.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D: This is fun. Not certain I would like to time travel though.
DeleteTraveling back in time wouldn't be easy. Nicely done story.
Delete
DeleteThank you EC and M. I'm doing my best! :)
Hi Margaret - Time travelling must be a dodgy pastime - where does one get to ... cheers Hilary
DeleteFirst set ... I'm on full-on duty - soI'll be back anon ...
ReplyDeleteIf you visit us in EastSussex we can take you to Periwinkle Island in Hastings … but be prepared for the chariot racing which prevails at most times of year.
If anyone hits the sculpture it will explode – it's filled with dynamite … ensuring vandals will be discouraged from damaging the beautiful gastropod.
The chariots' buckets are filled with winkles collected from the shore line … these molluscs are believed to have been an important source of food for thousands of years … in Hastings they are sold, once cooked, in fawn brown paper bags and are considered a delicacy.
Thanks everyone ... I'll be over to read - later in week ... cheers Hilary
Just realised gnocchi is missing ... a delicious meal can be made with gnocchi and the winkles - in a wine, cheese and cream sauce ... then a sprinkling of parmesan parsley on top ... pity it's breakfast time ... and not supper - mind you organising a dinner for 70 tonight ... so somewhat busy - at a local hotel - not cooked by me! Also not gnocchi, nor winkles ...
DeleteYou are just the one to know the delights of periwinkles, Hilary. Great job as always.
DeleteChariot racing intrigued me, great use of the words.

Hilary Melton Butcher: A dynamite filled sculpture would indeed discourage vandals - or at least ensure they didn't make a habit of it. A great take. No periwinkles on sale here. Ever that I have seen.
DeletePeriwinkle Island sounds beautiful just for the name. Nice story!
DeleteBochety is a fun word to learn. Never heard that one before. A few words have made for very entertaining stories.
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: It is a great word isn't it? I am v grateful to wisewebwoman.
DeleteMy second set:
ReplyDeleteThe Noticeboard bluntly announced she'd reached fifty, somewhat surprised she felt older, but perhaps the extra pieces of shortbread she'd eaten yesterday made her feel pudgy.
She hadn't been that brilliant with the mixture … it ended very bockety when she tried to cut it … but the shortbread, she felt, tasted rather gungy so she didn't worry about the wobbly broken pieces.
Fawn brown was the colour it should be … it tasted slightly caramelly – all good for her … she was 50 after all … middle age spread was a thing!
Cheers to you all - I'll be back to read - Hilary
Bockety shortbread. I could go for that! And pudge is a good thing.

Hilary Melton-Butcher: I have been making shortbread recently - it is a must have Christmas treat here. Thank you.
DeleteIt's not so much what it looks like but what it tastes like. You do very well with the prompts.
DeleteBuenas historias he leído. Mis felicitaciones a los participantes.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo.
VENTANA DE FOTO: Thank you so much. Have a great day.
DeleteThis was supposed to be my big date; the one to make an impression, the evening to seal the romance. If I do say so myself I make an excellent GNOCCHI and this one had turned out perfectly. The sauce delicate, flavoured with rosemary, and infused with a dash of PERIWINKLE sauce; unusual you might say, but she had hinted that seafood was a bit of an aphrodisiac for her. Hinted? Posted it on a virtual NOTICEBOARD to be BLUNT about it. The BUCKET at the side of the table was filled with ice, with that new Champagne called DYNAMITE nestled among the cubes, chilling nicely. I had ordered a limousine for her, to be picked up like a fairytale princess in a CHARIOT of SHORTBREAD. I had just turned FIFTY yet still had dreams of a family, and was well aware that the clock was ticking. At thirty-eight, and single, she too spoke of children. The moment arrived, we exchanged kisses, and she took her place at the table for dinner. Damn, I had forgotten to move that BOCKETY old chair. Suffice it to say, that her new hairdo, now festooned with gnocci and perwinkle sauce, as she wallowed in ice cubes on the floor was not what was needed to spark the evening. All I remember is the word UBER as she stalked out the door.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: The best laid plans... Like wisewebwoman I am laughing which is an excellent start to the day. Thank you.
DeleteOh, well. Better luck next time?
DeleteBrilliant David ... bockety a word many of us will remember - while the thought of being festooned with gnocchi in a periwinkle sauce upsets me! I'm glad Uber works so far out in life ?!... cheers Hilary
DeleteDavid: Periwrinkle sauce sounds odd to me but then again, I don't go out much. That was such good use of the prompts.
DeleteHave a lovely day.
OMG David, I can't stop laughing. A brilliant take on the words. I can see her (and him, crushed). What a great finish to the tale!
