Words for Wednesday 23/7/2025

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Computer issues led her to bow out for a while. The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we do with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore... We can use some or all of the prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog. I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud. And huge thanks to those of you who come back, sometimes time after time to cheer other contributors on.

Huge thanks to Hilary Melton-Butcher for providing the prompts last month. The prompts will be here again this month and are provided by Charlotte (MotherOwl).

An additional prompt from Charlotte (MotherOwl) is her colour of the month to use (or not) in your take on the prompts. The colour for July is"Writing Pleasure Purple"

This week's prompts are:
  • Include
  • Lick
  • Saunter
  • Hand
  • Berry
  • Apples

And/or

  • Respect
  • Elbow
  • Fork
  • Measure
  • Knife
  • Dream

Have fun.

I will schedule the posts for the rest of the month and they will still appear.  Goodness (or Blogger) only knows what has happened to the format.

  3. Hi EC. - here's mine ...

The kids were sauntering around the apple orchard, while looking for Purple berries in the hedges – I could see their tongues licking their hands clean – purpled out … the Raspberries were in the fruitcage – they couldn't get to those though. The dogs had included themselves … and were romping along too.

The gooseberries were ripening … they'd need the knife for them to cut the 'furry tail' off before they were cooked on the Aga – gooseberry fool could be made – delicious … forked through with some cream … even yummier …

It's that time of year when we dream of all the fruits and veggie … and think about the making of jam or pickles – the measuring required.

Our elbows did not need to go into our labours as much as our forebears would have put in in the past – I totally respect those earlier generations … but I enjoy these times … the easier freer way of life – letting the kids loose in the garden to learn about nature and life outside.

I need to write a short story for the Writing Magazine … I know people get pleasure reading my articles remembering times past – we forget so quickly … it's good to remind everyone.

Cheers - I'll be back tomorrow to read everyone's entries. Hilary

    1. I like this, it is a reminder of both the harder times of the past and the fun of being a child let outdoors to simply enjoy friends and games.

    2. This takes me back to earlier, simpler times, Hilary, probably never to return. And that’s sad!

    4. M'has transportat a la infantesa a casa, quan la mare preparava pots de melmelada d'albercoc i altres fruites. I també l'ajudàvem amb els pots de tomàquets... què bo era tot plegat!
      Aferradetes, Hilary.

  6. Here's mine, thanks for the prompts. All words and colour used.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She sat there licking the purple ice lolly like her life depended on it. Like she wanted another. Grape or a weird berry or poison. Yuck.
Mummy said I had to show you respect, she said, eyeing me carefully.
How are you going to do that? I asked her. The purple mess was leaking off her chin onto her pink dress. God.
My sister had a nerve asking me to take the child for the whole weekend. Four years old going on ninety. Her sitter had dropped out at the last minute.
I wiped her off for good measure with a bunch of napkins and took away the fork and knife she was playing with.
She put her elbows on the table and studied me. I passed her an apple my sister had included in her knapsack.
You’re no fun, she said loudly, digging her nails into the apple.
You want fun? I said incredulously, mummy told me you hated fun and that you were too serious for fun.
    Her mouth hung open.
But I have to have fun, I continued, so you’re going to have to suffer.
    Her eyes widened.
Well then, first we have to find a playground and you can watch me on the slides and swings and then you can wait while I go into a toy shop…..
I couldn’t keep it up anymore. I laughed and then she did too.
As we left, she slipped her hand into mine and we sauntered down the road towards the park.

    Best of luck, everyone!

  9. There were many members of the club who never contributed anything to its success other than their annual dues. KNIFE-and-FORKERS we called them. They would SAUNTER into a meeting if dinner was being served that evening, DREAMING no doubt of homemade butter tarts for dessert. The caterer we had back then had a fabulous recipe and a couple of capable assistants who had a HAND in mixing the batch. It was ELBOWS up at the table when the tarts were brought out. APPLE pies and BLUEBERRY pies were also generally available, but nothing topped the butter tarts. They garnered the level of RESPECT generally reserved for dining at the Ritz. As was always the case with gooey butter tarts extra serviettes were provided to wipe your chin, and some even swept their chin with their finger to LICK up the molten goodness. Yep, those knife-and-forkers paid their dues and for at least one evening a year satisfaction was INCLUDED. That’s value for money!

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
In the warmth of the afternoon, the children gathered in the garden. Sitting in a circle, with shining eyes and whispering voices, they talked about their DREAMS in a tone of intrigue.
—Yesterday I dreamed that I was walking through a PURPLE forest—, said one child, as he LICKED the juicy BERRY he had picked from an imaginary tree.
—I had a shining APPLE in my HAND, full of magic—, added another as he SAUNTER his hand before everyone's eyes.
Everyone laughed and bumped their ELBOWS enthusiastically. With an invisible FORK and KNIFE, they began to cut out the stories. Every detail was a MEASURE of RESPECT for their own imagination.
—In my dream, the trees whispered unknown words, INCLUDING the most difficult ones—, mumbled the girl, timidly drawing in the air.
Words floated between them, the little ones wove a universe where the impossible became possible, between laughter and shared secrets.

    Gràcies!

  14. This "Words for Wednesday" meme sounds like so much fun! It's cool how it's become a movable feast and keeps going. I love that you can use words, phrases, music, or even an image as prompts. And "Writing Pleasure Purple" for July? That's such a unique and creative idea for a color.
I just shared a new post. You are invited to read. Thank you. Have a nice weekend.
