The Other Side

Recently I put up a post of the very beautiful Jazz lounging at his ease on top of the fridge.  It is true that he is beautiful.  He needs to be.

I am decidedly below him in the household hierarchy.  The skinny portion is top of the food chain, with Jazz just beneath him.  Every so often Jazz will attempt a challenge - but it is usually half hearted.

Jewel and I are a long way below the exalted males.  I am marginally above Jewel, but I think this is because I have opposable thumbs and can open the child cat proof lock on the fridge.

This photo is blurred.  This photo is not a good photo.  However, this photo shows quite clearly that there are far too many teeth in that sweet little cat's mouth.  And that he really, really wanted to sink them into something.  (Clicking on the photo will enlarge it - and may give you nightmares.)

And shortly after I took this photo he launched himself off the fridge and tried to sink those teeth into Jewel.  She ran away shrieking so he sank them into me instead.  Isn't it a good thing (for him) that he is undeniably beautiful and, when he wants to be, charming.

  4. My cat Cleo used to sneak up behind me, wrap herself around my ankle and sink her teeth in, drawing blood. I took to wearing thick socks in the house as a defense. But when I got her a kitten companion, she stopped doing that for some reason. Cats are a mystery. :)

    1. Lynn: It sounds as if Cleo had some Jazz like tendencies - except that his teeth goes through trousers, never mind socks. Jewel was in the house before him, but it just one more target...

  7. Oh my Jazz is quite the cat isn't he, definitely reminds me of my cat Poncho, when he was little he would hide behind the couch when I had my girlfriends over for a sewing circle, he would run out and bite one or another on the ankle and run back behind the couch.

    1. runningfromhellwithel: Jazz uses his paws to reef open the fridge. Jewel watched and learned. She is not as strong as he is so she weasels her nose into the door seal until it pops open. Hence the cat lock on the fridge. I love that they teach each other things. It is sad that the things they teach I would prefer neither of them knew.

  9. Thank goodness for opposable thumbs, eh? They often serve us so well. :-) I LOL'ed at this post, but not at Jazz's photo (I wouldn't dare!) Goodness but he looks vicious! Like a handsome movie villain. Your fridge decor, on the other hand, looks delightful and colorful and interesting! I think you should post a photo of your refrigerator so we can admire all the goodies festooning it. :-)

    1. Laloofah: Jazz is frequently charming. He is always charming to the skinny portion and spends a lot of time nestled into his lap purring loudly. Jewel and I are the recipients of the psycho cat from hell looks (and deeds). Thank you for the suggestion. A fridge post will happen at some stage.

It's like kids, though, isn't it? They come out of the box cute as can be so we don't kill 'em.

  14. When we had cats one of the first things I taught them was that in my house they weren't allowed any higher than the window ledges. We only had one who was a little on the vicious side. You had to watch for the signs. Jazz is a real beauty.

    1. mybabyjohn/Delores. Most of our windows are floor to ceiling. And believe me I have tried to discourage the fridge caper - and a few others. However, the skinny portion rewards him for his bad behaviour. He lifts him down it is true - but pats him and speaks lovely words as he does so. I am fighting a losing battle.

Remy and Shama share equal footing. They use me as their launching and landing pad...the leap up to the window sill above my bed...a king-size...and they MUST leap of me and then back on to me again. They are going to wind me one of these nights...or break a couple of ribs! They think it's fun...a bit of a lark! I can tell that they do, because I notice the smirk on their faces each time they do it! I keep threatening them...and say to them, "One of these nights, I'm going to leap onto you...and see how you like it!"

    They just laugh!

  25. We took in a stray about nine months ago who would bite or scratch us as soon as she would look at us. With time she has gotten much more civilized, but I am still quite wary of her. I did some reading on it and as far as I can tell, she has "displaced agression" meaning if she is not pleased she bites us :) I wish Jazz would mellow for you; I don't like to think of a cat who both runs the household AND abuses the help ...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. jenny_o: It seems we have done some of the same reading. Jazz does seem to suffer from displaced agression, but it is very carefully targeted. As an example, he likes to do limp falls on the floor and present his belly for rubs. If I take him up on his offer, at least half the time he purrs loudly and utilises teeth and claws. If I remove my arm and the skinny portion approaches, the purring continues but their is no violence. If we swap again, the bloodshed resumes. He will not sit in my lap, but he invariably sleeps on my bit of bed. Psycho cat. I do not know what the solution is at all. When he is good he is very, very good - and when he is bad he is horrid.

  26. The enlarged pic is indeed quite frightening. Perhaps some film company could use Jazz in one of their horror movies? I would be armed with a squirty bottle ready for whenever he decides to use teeth and claws. Funnily enough our Precious rarely attacks me in any way but she will have a go at MOH at times if he interrupts her ablutions etc. There is never a way of reading what goes on in a cat's mind at any time of the night or day. A cat is a cat is a cat...need I say more?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mimsie: Jazz really doesn't care if I use the squirty bottle. He just waits and, as soon as my guard is down, attacks again. And he has been quite wet when he attacks. And yes, you are right, it is part of his 'cattiness', which I don't mean in the sense that he is spiteful.

  28. I didn't realize how much teeth he had until I enlarged it! Wow!!! My sister had a beautiful black cat who would growl and practically "talk" -- no cute meows -- just these whiny sounds. Her eyes would dilate and she would pounce on her victim leaving bite marks on whosever arm because she was declawed. Occasionally, she was able to be petted, but very gingerly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Deb: Far too many, big pointy teeth. Jazz also growls - at the postman, at the neighbours, at children... He has taught this skill to Jewel as well. Jazz loves his pats, but he also loves the taste of me. He purrs loudly when patted, he purrs loudly when biting me.

  29. Peggy often feels the urge to "bite someone," and that someone is always me since she doesn't want to bite the cat or the dog and get a mouthful of fur. Do you think that's normal? Is she related to Jazz, do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Snowbrush: If she was related to Jazz she would bite you all anyway, and would merely spit the fur onto the floor for someone else to clean up. And the urge to bite seems perfectly normal to me, but then I am never entirely certain where normal is. 'The only normal people are those you don't know very well.

  31. Dear EC, I used to live with a kitten--Tybalt--who was always hungry. When I sat eating at the kitchen table, he'd leap up and bite the sandwich between my fingers. Because you've been bitten by a cat, you know that when Tybalt bite down on the thumb holding the food it really hurt!
And yet. And yet. As you say, they are beautiful and charming . . . and mysterious. And every cat with whom I've lived has entered the chambers of my heart and mind and I've cherished them. Peace.
