Words for Wednesday

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Week after week she provided us with challenging prompts.    Computer issues led her to bow out for a while and I took over.  When Delores' absence looked like being more permanent I begged and cajoled for other volunteers to share providing the prompts, and Words for Wednesday became a movable feast.  Delores discontinued her blog for a while, but she has returned.  Her new blog can be found here.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...  We can use some or all of the prompts.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

This month the prompts were to be provided by Vest at his blog.  Life has got in his way (as it does), so this month I will provide the prompts.

If he does put up a post, then we will just have more words to play with.

This week's prompts are:

  1. angel
  2. lullaby
  3. condition
  4. sad
  5. melt
  6. crocodile
And/or
  1. formula
  2. honeydew
  3. bumble
  4. sticky
  5. hoax
  6. felon
Have fun.
Next month Granny Annie will be providing the first of the year's prompts, and in Febuary we are travelling full circle and they will be provided  by Delores, who originated the meme.
I am looking for other volunteers for subsequent months.  Please leave a response in the comments if you are happy to challenge us.

    3. Well that took a while but, here we go....
      Here we go:
Bumble, the nectar gathering fairy, was in a sad condition. Deep in the centre of a honeydew melon blossom, Bumble found himself stuck fast.
“Well, this is a sticky situation.” Bumble wailed. “What am I to do?”
His cries for help echoed across Fairyvale Valley. Little Fluff twinkled at the entrance to the flower throat.
“What seems to be the problem Bumble?” she asked.
“I’m stuck. I’ve been stuck in here for hours. If I manage to left one foot free the other sinks even deeper. What’s worse,” he added, “is that soon this flower will close for the night. Am I a felon to be so incarcerated? If I don’t get out of here before ‘closing time’ there is no hope for me. An angel will be singing my lullaby tonight and forever.” His tears fell in sparkling trails down his face.
“Bumble, you need to calm down. Spare me your crocodile tears. You know as well as I do the magic formula for solving your problem.”
      “I do?”
“Of course you do. What do the bees do?”
Bumble thought and thought. Bees…what do they do? And then it came to him.
“They believe and just take to wing.”
“Exactly, and just to help you along, here’s a little sprinkle of fairy dust to help melt away your troubles. Now, let’s see you do it. Believe and take wing. And hurry, because this flowers alarm clock just went off.”

    4. only slightly confused: Bumble doesn't sound like the brightest fairy in the flowerbed. Good thing he has friends. And I do hope that the honeydew doesn't shut down just as soon as the alarm goes off.

  2. We woke Christmas morning to a mess. Someone had made their way into our house sometime between Santa coming and the family waking. Several things were missing and others were in shambles or dirty, but amazingly the wrapped resents appeared to be completely untouched. Since no one at our house claimed to have seen the felon we began a complex formula for the reconstructing the crime scene. A bowl of diced honeydew melon, previously in the refrigerator, was on the kitchen floor, with partially eaten cubes of melon in a slightly curvy line from one side of the kitchen to the other. The melon trail stopped at the counter holding the cookie jar. A kitchen chair had been pushed up to the counter top and about half the cookies were gone leaving a spray of green and red sugar sprinkle confetti and crumbs in their wake. The crumbs then led us to the bon bon tray in the living room. The chocolate truffles were gone but 2 partially eaten cookies were left in their place. Hmmm, there was no obvious path to follow from the truffles, but we did notice tiny chocolate handprints on the brand new Big Wheel under the tree. A few Hot Wheels seemed to have the same sticky finger marks, as did an opened set of legos. What burglar in their right mind would plan such a devious crime, or was this a hoax, a simple prank to keep us on our toes? We asked that question to the 3 year old towheaded child standing beside us still in his chocolate smeared, crumb covered red footie p.j.'s. He looked up at us with a sincere crumby, chocolaty fruit laden face and said "I sink Santa did it"

    3. So cute! "I sink Santa did it" memories of three year olds flitting through my mind now :)

    4. To be honest, we did have a real life story about a naked birthday cake, (not and iota of frosting remained but the 3 cake layers were perfectly intact) a screaming older brother (the birthday boy), a chocolate face and "I sink Matt ate it" even though brother Matt was in a different city at the time

      Delete
    5. Anne in the kitchen: Brothers can be like that. In our case a German Shepherd scoffed one of my brother's entire birthday cake - and adding insult to injury was promptly sick. No cute lies to go with it though.

  7. EXTRA, EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT.
Cruel lullaby hoax. Sticky-fingered angel exposed as a felon.
In the last year scores of our most vulnerable residents have been lulled into a deep sleep by the 'Angel Honeydew's' lullaby waking up hours later to discover that they had been robbed. Police Commissioner Ernest Bumble praised the work of detectives who brought this heartless criminal to justice. 'Robbing people at the end of their lives is despicable' he said. 'It is so sad when a community icon turns to the dark side. 'Honeydew's song was designed to be used in the hospice, to melt the pain from conditions that doctors cannot touch. Instead this crocodile in angel's feathers used the magic formula for his own gain. ' If I have anything to do with it, Honeydew will never fly again, and will rot behind bars for ever!' he thundered, to loud applause.

  11. I've lost track of what day it is! I have eventually woken up to the fact it is Wednesday!

"After Christmas lunch was completed and depleted I had no need for a LULLABY to send me off to sleep. I’m sure I saw the ANGEL atop of the Christmas wink at me as I drifted off.

The STICKY summer heat was enough to MELT the frosting off the Christmas cake.

Between the heat and the huge lunch I’d devoured I was in no fit CONDITION to join the kids in their game of backyard cricket.

I knew I should’ve begged off from the rich, luscious Plum Duff and just had the fresh HONEYDEW melon- based fruit salad; but oh, no...I had to go the whole hog!

That Aunt Bertha hadn’t shown up for the day didn’t make me feel SAD, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to shed CROCODILE tears over her non-appearance just to appease some in the family.

At first I thought it was HOAX when I was told she wasn’t turning up for the day because she’d taken offence a something – imaginary - I’d said or done during the year.

It wasn’t me who’d been the FELON, but, then, Bertha had never liked me. I was the enemy as far as she was concerned.

As always, it was easy for her to point the finger of guilt at me. In her eyes, I could never do anything right.

Fortunately, most everyone else knew what she was like, and showered me with gratitude for her absence even though they knew I’d done no wrong.

They didn’t like her, either, but they still pandered to her every whim, whereas I wouldn’t.
Aunt Bertha might not have been there, but I could still hear her voice, like an annoying BUMBLE bee ever present in my ear. I was never good enough for her, the silly old goat!

How I wished I had a magic FORMULA, not to be rid of her physically, but to rid her of her caustic, nasty, selfish, demanding personality. Life shouldn’t be that difficult. Bertha had no right to make it so."

he was in a sad condition
    an angel came and sang
    him a lullaby, that melted
    his heart, he soon began
    to do the water dance
to woo a mate, his song
    bouncing off the surface
    skipping pebbles of delight
    his love she couldn't resist
