Words for Wednesday

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Computer issues led her to bow out for a while.  The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...  We can use some or all of the prompts.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

The prompts will be here again this month but are provided by Margaret Adamson, and her friend Sue Fulton.  They also include photographs taken by Margaret's friend Bill Dodds.

This week's prompts are:

  1. Off one's rocker

And/or

  1. Hit the sack

Have fun.

  1. "I decided to HIT THE SACK early last night so I could wake up early to begin working on this week’s Wednesday Words; but, upon seeing them, one would have to be OFF ONE’S ROCKER trying to build a lengthy story around the prompts.

Having given every excuse in the world to put off starting the housework, I’ve now got no excuses left. It’s time to grab the vacuum cleaner!"

    3. The good thing about housework (or maybe it's the bad thing) is, if you don't do it today you can always do it tomorrow because it's always there.

  2. After climbing up onto a bale of hay, Jerome hit the sack with all his might with no result. None at all. He stepped off. One's rocker blocked his vision and he tumbled into the corn bin. Dang. Jerome would try again tomorrow. Gotta get rid of that rocker, he perused.

  5. Jack was torn.
Whichever path he took someone would say he was wrong. If they were polite they would say one was 'Off one's rocker to take that approach'.
He was young. Footloose. Fancy free.
So, did he hit the books so he could hit the ground running? Or did he hit the bottle each night before hitting the sack.
Hit the panic button and study his heart out? Or hit the skids and rock bottom.
Hit the road, or hit the brakes?
    Decisions, decisions, decisions.

  11. "Off one's rocker" was the general consensus as I waxed lyrical about the joys of brush painting and the fabulousness that would ensue, but hours, nay, days later, I had to concede they were right. I must have been off my rocker so start this project. I stared at the mess a while longer, then hit the sack and fell asleep instantly, to dream of perfectly coloured and polished antique tables and cabinets.

  13. Last week I spell-o-taped the knocker
    and switched off the telephone,
you may think I was off my rocker
but I just wanted to rest alone.

I'd done some heavy lifting back to back
Oh it was time, high time to hit the sack...

Matters grey and white inside my brain
got knotted and clotted with the work -
my eyes spun, my fingers went insane,
my laps and tops and tips went berserk.

But it's done now, I'm refreshed and I'm back
time to rise and shine and not hit the sack.

Whenever he felt puny, he would “hit the sack.”

  19. 1. Hi EC ... Off one's rocker

There were no rockers, the beach stretched onwards - the tide was out; blue sky reflected in the river as it meandered towards the sea.

An outing ... a fun day out - the kids jumping across the rocky shore, tidal pools to explore - the child-minder was relaxed, sandwiches and drinks had been consumed ... everyone was content.

She moved along the rocks to a larger one balanced precariously above a tiny precipice to watch the tide swirl in ...

Then realised she was stuck as the tide came in, thankfully the kids were safe ... until they realised she was in trouble ...

... she rocked with worry ... the outcrop tipped off, splodge and splash, a scream ... she went down with the rock ... no-one knew she was off her rocker ....

    Cheers Hilary

  21. Believe it or not 2 TRUE stories!

Once a month a group of us go to a film show that a U3A member organises and last night we all set off to see "The Bombshell". We always start with having nibbles and a glass of wine.

Although I had heard of Hedy Lamarr, the beautiful film star, I never knew she was a very talented inventor and had an untutored brilliance in science and engineering. With her friend, composer George Antheil, she submitted a patent for a secure communications “frequency hopping” technology that the US Navy was to use after the patent’s lapse without paying her and that was to become the basis for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

I will not spoil the film by telling you anymore about it, however after the wine and a very busy day, I struggled to keep awake and although it was a fascinating film, all I could think about was to go home as quick as possible when the film ended and HIT THE SACK.

    -------------------------------

Now about a year and a half ago I contacted 4 other friends to see if they wanted to start a group to go out for a coffee and scones. So group “Sconners” was born. I am the Senior Sconner, being the oldest, better known as SS, then I have a second in command ( SSIC) a third in command ( STIC) then SPAR who is my Personal Sconner's Assistant Reporter (yes I know a bit of a mouthful) and finally SPAM ( he is suppose to take any minutes). In fact he doesn't, SPAR seems to do all that. We already have had our AGM travelling in Dublin, ( having scones in the train) followed by a gorgeous lunch in a up market restaurant in College Green, near Trinity College.

At normal Sconners meeting we take it in turn to pick a different venue but only the driver knows where we are going as we all like surprises. At each Sconners meeting, SPAR, hands us an A4 Sheet that we all have to mark out of 10, with different headings, like ambience, value for money, size, texture etc and then at the AGM, SPAR worked out which coffee shop has won and the person who took us there, gets a cup, certificate and framed photograph of a lovely scone.

I know by now, not only are you thinking I am OFF ONE's ROCKER but all 5 of us are! However, we all have great fun, have found many different coffee shops and sampled gorgeous scones. What’s not to like!

This Friday is my turn to have the next meeting but I cannot tell you were that will be - it's a secret!
