Sunday Selections #633

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme. This week (for a change) I am going to start with early morning shots from home.

Then I am going to take you out with me a little later in the day for another trip to town and yet more public art some of which I have shown before.

This is The Other Side of Midnight by Anne Ross.  Shortly before I took this photo there was a small person hugging one of the dogs.

This is the Icarus Series (2009) by Jan Brown.

Life Cycle by David Jensz.  It is made of stainless steel and stones.
Yet another planter box.  They are changed regularly, and there is almost invariably something in bloom.

Some day, I will go through this shopping centre when it is open and go into this small gallery.

I thought that this brutalist sculpture was softened by the reflected light from the sunrise.

Shots of the sky as I walked to catch the first of my buses (for some reason best known to itself Blogger played silly buggers with the order of my photos).

The art in the city centre is very varied and I think there is probably something there for everyone.

I hope you find beauty in your week too.

  1. River Fairchild - The dogs exuded happiness. I probably would have hugged them too. You found so much variety today! Indeed, something for everyone.
Hugs and peaceful vibes for the coming week sent your way.

  2. Hi EC - yes definitely I can find something to love from one of the many artworks you show us ... you have a lovely city ... those clouds are imposing though. Early mornings - always good - cheers Hilary

    1. Hilary Melton-Butcher: As I have said before I don't like all of the art in my city but I love that it is there. And some pieces I do love. Early morning is one of my favourite times of day. Our dawn was subtle this morning - but still lovely.

  3. Love the art and the flowers and your skyscapes as always. Particularly the dogs, they are stealable.

  5. Wow, what an amazing variety of art! The sheep made me giggle; and the 'Life Cycle'... made me shudder. It's beautifully done, but for some reason it reminds me of a venomous snake. I actualy like snakes - we have lots of garter snakes around our place and I quite enjoy watching them. But 'Life Cycle' looks dangerous. Maybe that was the point: None of us are getting out of this alive... ;-)

    2. Diane Henders: I may never look at Life Cycle in the same way again. You are right, we won't get out alive. I can appreciate snakes from a distance. Many of ours are venomous, some VERY much so. Snakes have been seen in the city too.

  11. What wonderful sculptures. I can see most of them would be much loved, but maybe not the last, though as you say, the light gives it more interest. The sheep on the chair is very amusing.

    1. Andrew: I hope that most of them are loved - though possibly by different people. Sadly that brutalist sculpture is the only one in the shopping area I go through on my way to LL.

  12. I love the blend of colors in your ski photos.

Your city sure is vibrant with its huge array of sculptures and street art. Today, I think my favorite one has to be that diamond shaped fountain. The sheep is a hoot. It has to force grumpy people to smile, I'm sure.
Enjoy the new week and stay well.

  18. I'm afraid that "life cycle" doesn't do anything for me (or to me) but everything else raises a smile, even the Brutalist sculpture. It's a lot less brutal than most of it's cohort and of course, nothing can be truly brutal when there's pink involved :)

    1. kylie: You are so right about brutal not living comfortably with soft pink. I am glad that the art in the city raised smiles for you.

  24. the dogs are happy art. Some of the others, hmmmm. I've never heard of Brutalist as an art style, but now that you name that style, I can see it.

  26. I have probably stated the obvious before, but art enhances and humanizes a city. One may not appreciate all that is on display but that in no way diminishes its value. It's an opportunity for learning and personal enrichment. Canberra is in so many ways an enlightened city.

  30. Dear EC
I love to see the art in your city - so much to enjoy. It is great when people react so well to art - hugging it, for instance! At the moment, we have a painted heart trail, but this is only temporary. I particularly liked the stalking cat/leopard/jaguar.
Have a peaceful and healthy week.

  31. The fountain is my favorite - combining still art with moving water. Most of our cities have a fountain or two of some kind, usually at strategic points (townhall, park, center). I like them all.

  33. I like all your art, least the brutalist one - we have something looking as if it was a part of the same series near here. Modern art seems to bbe the same all over the world.
What is the story behind those impaled dogs?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Charlotte (MotherOwl): I am not a fan of the brutalist style - but thought it was improved with the reflected sunrise. The dogs are not impaled - it is their support to ensure that they are stable - and in person you really don't notice the skewer through their middle.

  34. The skyscapes are magical as usual. I loved the Life Cycle sculpture especially - just awed by it. There is so much variety in your photos here - colourful, monochrome, living, inanimate, a feast for the eyes and brain both. Thank you. Hope your week goes well.
