Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. This week (for a change) I am going to start with early morning shots from home.
Then I am going to take you out with me a little later in the day for another trip to town and yet more public art some of which I have shown before.
This is The Other Side of Midnight by Anne Ross. Shortly before I took this photo there was a small person hugging one of the dogs.
This is the Icarus Series (2009) by Jan Brown.
Life Cycle by David Jensz. It is made of stainless steel and stones.
Yet another planter box. They are changed regularly, and there is almost invariably something in bloom.
Shots of the sky as I walked to catch the first of my buses (for some reason best known to itself Blogger played silly buggers with the order of my photos).
The art in the city centre is very varied and I think there is probably something there for everyone.
I hope you find beauty in your week too.
River Fairchild - The dogs exuded happiness. I probably would have hugged them too. You found so much variety today! Indeed, something for everyone.
ReplyDeleteHugs and peaceful vibes for the coming week sent your way.
River Fairchild: I hope you are feeling better. Much better. The dogs are joyful aren't they, and I loved seeing the small person hugging one tightly. Peaceful vibes sound excellent - for us both.
DeleteHi EC - yes definitely I can find something to love from one of the many artworks you show us ... you have a lovely city ... those clouds are imposing though. Early mornings - always good - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: As I have said before I don't like all of the art in my city but I love that it is there. And some pieces I do love. Early morning is one of my favourite times of day. Our dawn was subtle this morning - but still lovely.
DeleteLove the art and the flowers and your skyscapes as always. Particularly the dogs, they are stealable.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Wisewebwoman: Any artwork that has people (of any age) hugging it is definitely a keeper.
DeleteI love the early morning light, EC. I never tire of the art in your beautiful city!
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: Thank you. I love the early morning light too, and am grateful to see it.
DeleteWow, what an amazing variety of art! The sheep made me giggle; and the 'Life Cycle'... made me shudder. It's beautifully done, but for some reason it reminds me of a venomous snake. I actualy like snakes - we have lots of garter snakes around our place and I quite enjoy watching them. But 'Life Cycle' looks dangerous. Maybe that was the point: None of us are getting out of this alive... ;-)
ReplyDeleteOops, typo. 'Actually', not 'actualy'. :-)
DeleteDiane Henders: I may never look at Life Cycle in the same way again. You are right, we won't get out alive. I can appreciate snakes from a distance. Many of ours are venomous, some VERY much so. Snakes have been seen in the city too.
DeleteThank you very much that was great... you had a wonderful walk with a lot of artistic enjoyment.
ReplyDeleteI find the life cycle exciting.
A hug to you from Viola
Viola: Thank you. I really like that there are several pieces of art on every block in the city. Some of them stay there for years and others change.
DeleteSuch lovely whimsical art. It brought many smiles to my face. And I also always love the sunrise and sunset shots. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: I am always glad to make you smile..
DeleteIt's always a pleasure to see your early morning photographs and the amazing colours in the skies.
ReplyDeleteYou certainly have wonderful and quite varied art in your city.
Enjoy the new week, they certainly seem to go by so quickly.
All the best Jan
lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. I think it is delightful that the art in the city - and indeed across my city is so varied. Taking photographs of it is good for me too - and stops me from taking it for granted.
DeleteTravels through the streets of Canberra with you are always very pleasant, and for that, I thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteMay the coming week treat you and yours well, EC...cuddles to Batty and Odie. I hope all is okay with the two little rascals. :)
Lee: Thank you. My city gets a lot of bad press and I am glad to present the other side. The kittens are mostly doing better. I hope you and Shama have a great week.
DeleteThe sculptures during any photo walks are just great discovery and fun to browse. Great photography.
ReplyDeleteroentare: Thank you. There is a heap of art in our city centre and I love that it is there.
DeleteWhat wonderful sculptures. I can see most of them would be much loved, but maybe not the last, though as you say, the light gives it more interest. The sheep on the chair is very amusing.
ReplyDeleteAndrew: I hope that most of them are loved - though possibly by different people. Sadly that brutalist sculpture is the only one in the shopping area I go through on my way to LL.
DeleteI love the blend of colors in your ski photos.
ReplyDeleteYour city sure is vibrant with its huge array of sculptures and street art. Today, I think my favorite one has to be that diamond shaped fountain. The sheep is a hoot. It has to force grumpy people to smile, I'm sure.
Enjoy the new week and stay well.
Hugs,
Julia
Julia: I really like that fountain too - and as you know I am addicted to skyscapes. You have a wonderful week too.
DeleteThank you. Wonderful, as always.
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: Thank you.
DeleteYou have beautiful skies and some lovely art in your area.
ReplyDeleteMy photos will be over here.
messymimi: I am well aware of how lucky I am. I am looking forward to your selections - including the gorgeous skyscapes you share.
DeleteColorful skies and groovy street art. YAY!
ReplyDeleteThe carousel dogs are ace.
Bea: The dogs have their names on them too - which I think is a lovely touch. The grey one is Charlotte and the blue one Jerry.
DeleteIt is always pleasant to see the public art.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Caterina: I really like it too.
DeleteI love the dogs and the little dancer, also that Nature artwork with the sayings around the flowers. The pavement art is really nice too.
ReplyDeleteRiver: The Nature artwork is one I don't think I have photographed before - and I hope it stays. I suspect the pavement art is temporary and hope that it gets replaced. For some reason blogger again decided you were spam.
DeleteI'm afraid that "life cycle" doesn't do anything for me (or to me) but everything else raises a smile, even the Brutalist sculpture. It's a lot less brutal than most of it's cohort and of course, nothing can be truly brutal when there's pink involved :)
ReplyDeletekylie: You are so right about brutal not living comfortably with soft pink. I am glad that the art in the city raised smiles for you.
DeleteThe sky is always amazing.
ReplyDeleteLove the art around you city, and the sheep on it's back is fantastic.
Margaret D: You are right about the sky - and I do love our street art.
DeleteA delightful series as always. Loved all these sculptures you share. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed wandering through the city with me.
DeleteA great collection of public art, most of it great fun and easily accessible to most people, even little ones.
ReplyDeleteJohn "By Stargoose And Hanglands": I think that art should be accessible to every one - at every age.
DeleteI love art street EC, brilliant.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: I love it too.
DeleteWhat a fascinating array of sculptures in your city. I like the dogs in the Other Side of Midnight. I also like Icarus. Your sculptures are amazing and that flower box is beautiful. I think my favorite might be the Women's mural. Very poignant. Thanks so much for taking us on this walk, dear Sue.
ReplyDeleteBleubeard and Elizabeth: I really like that Women's Mural too. I hope it stays.
Deletethe dogs are happy art. Some of the others, hmmmm. I've never heard of Brutalist as an art style, but now that you name that style, I can see it.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: I think that Brutalist is more commonly used for architecture but I thought it fit the bill for that sculpture. The dogs are indeed happy. And loved.
DeleteGreat sky shots as usual.
ReplyDelete:o)
Cheers
PM
Plastic Mancunian: I never ever tire of skyscapes.
DeleteI have probably stated the obvious before, but art enhances and humanizes a city. One may not appreciate all that is on display but that in no way diminishes its value. It's an opportunity for learning and personal enrichment. Canberra is in so many ways an enlightened city.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: I agree with you. I am so grateful that there is so much art in my city.
DeleteLovely post...Happy Sunday
ReplyDeleteashok: Thank you. It is Monday here now, but I hope your week is good.
DeleteThese are wonderful sculptures!
ReplyDeleteJenn Jilks: As I so often say, while I don't like all of them I love that they are there.
DeleteSunrise and art.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous way to start any day! Your wish for us to find beauty in our week was granted as soon as we visited you here. Thank you for sharing.
Wally Jones: What a lovely thing to say. Thank you.
DeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteI love to see the art in your city - so much to enjoy. It is great when people react so well to art - hugging it, for instance! At the moment, we have a painted heart trail, but this is only temporary. I particularly liked the stalking cat/leopard/jaguar.
Have a peaceful and healthy week.
Best wishes
Ellie
Ellie Foster: Seeing the small person hugging the dog made me smile broadly. I hope the artist knows and has seen it for herself.
DeleteThe fountain is my favorite - combining still art with moving water. Most of our cities have a fountain or two of some kind, usually at strategic points (townhall, park, center). I like them all.
ReplyDeleteDUTA: That fountain has been there for a very long time. I love it - and sometimes in summer it triggers rainbows.
DeleteI really like the art. So many really interesting pieces.
ReplyDeleteMary Kirkland: I like it too, and never tire of it.
DeleteI like all your art, least the brutalist one - we have something looking as if it was a part of the same series near here. Modern art seems to bbe the same all over the world.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the story behind those impaled dogs?
Charlotte (MotherOwl): I am not a fan of the brutalist style - but thought it was improved with the reflected sunrise. The dogs are not impaled - it is their support to ensure that they are stable - and in person you really don't notice the skewer through their middle.
DeleteThe skyscapes are magical as usual. I loved the Life Cycle sculpture especially - just awed by it. There is so much variety in your photos here - colourful, monochrome, living, inanimate, a feast for the eyes and brain both. Thank you. Hope your week goes well.
ReplyDeleteNilanjana Bose: As you know I adore skyscapes and watch for them every day. The variety of art in my city is a delight. As I said, I think there is something for almost everyone - and you would be very hard to please if you couldn't find something to enjoy. You have a good week too.
DeleteYes, so much beauty to capture!
ReplyDeletegigi-hawaii: Beauty is everywhere - for which I am very grateful.
DeleteWhat a lovely stroll we had. It put a smile on my face. Thank you, my friend.
ReplyDeleteSandra sandracox.blogspot.com
Sandra Cox: I am always happy to walk with you - and smiles are a bonus.
DeleteJust love the photos. Thank you for taking me along. It has been a hectic week for me since my best friend from the 6th grade died on Tuesday. I hope you have a good weekend,
ReplyDeleteRasmaSandra: I am sorry for your loss. You have a great week, and be gentle to yourself.
DeleteThose dogs are definitely huggable, but the big doll looks a little intimidating. You have a lot of wonderful art in your city, Sue. I really enjoy public works of art, of all kinds. And your moody skies are beautiful. Enjoy the weekend!
ReplyDeleteFundy Blue: I am a big fan of public art and so very grateful we have a lot of it. You have a good weekend too.
DeleteWhat wonderful art you always find. Love these! Im coming back later to see more. xo
ReplyDeleteJ C: I really, really like our public art - and the variety.
