Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. A few weeks ago among other things I posted a photo of Odie (here) where I don't want him to go. He was far too close to the vintage glass paperweights that Cj spotted.
I first gave himself a paperweight for his birthday a number of years ago. He liked it so much that it has become a tradition that he should receive one. Here are some of them.

I agree with Odie those paperweights are amazing. I could sit and gaze at each one just for the shapes and colors alone. I hope you have a great new week ahead.

River Fairchild: Which one can indeed be a challenge. Our local glassworks runs classes in how to make them and if I coped better with heat and my hands didn't shake so much I would sign up in a heartbeat. Be careful. On blazing days I let the weeds rest - and dammit they cope better with the heat than I do, and many of the plants I want to grow.

Deletelove paperweights and just think someone actually made those with molten glass. We have had rain, then hot, and now rain again all summer long but I can't complain as our watering chores were very minimized. Hope you have a mild summer as we have.

DeleteI love paperweights. They are exquisite glass. I seldom came across such glass artists at my shows, and their weights cost a lot of money. I managed to collect only three or four. The paperweights you have collected for Himself are incredible works.
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: Ever since I was a child and watched a glass blower at my father's work I have been fascinated by glass. And some work is incredibly beautiful. It can be expensive but I have had some very lucky buys.
DeleteThey are wonderful. I love coloured glass. But wouldn't there be an expectation that each year's weight will be better than the previous years.

DeleteThey are all beautiful and so is the tradition. I have one glass paperweight, which I found years ago, I don't remember exactly where, but it wasn't expensive, so maybe a thrift store. It has a yellow petalled flower with green leaves and tiny stamens. I'll take a photo and show it next week. It's safely out of Lola's reach and has survived a LOT of house moves.

DeleteI can't go past the fuschia colour on the second one. I've never heard of anyone collecting paper weights before but I really like the way it's a treasured tradition, a little more special than a standard collection (though that might be insulting to collectors!)

I took a short glass-blowing course and loved it; and although I didn't create anything nearly as nice as your paperweights, I'm still unreasonably pleased by my (slightly-deformed) glass starfish with swirls of green and blue throughout. Glass is such a fascinating material - sometimes even "mistakes" turn out to be stunning.

DeleteWow........beautiful colorful paper weights. The very first one is my favorite; but they're all beautiful.. A couple of them remind me of some of the pretty marbles my older brother had growing up. That's quite the collection.
