Sunday Selections #821

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Sorry I still haven't succeeded in working out how to do a blog hop. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme. Parts of Australia have been having buckets of rain recently.  Flooding rain.  We are in drought and need rain.  Naturally we haven't received any of the buckets.  Every day last week rain was forecast.  Until Thursday we had received none.  On Thursday and Friday we received a little.  And I rejoiced.  And revelled in the beauty.

Grey days, but I thought there was a lot of beauty in it too.
I loved the plants bejewelled with water droplets and thought that the colours of the rain washed foliage popped.  The scent of the rain washed air was lovely too.

 There were visiting birds too.

The birds seemed totally unphased by the rain.
As an aside why oh why are weather predictions accurate to within a degree on temperature and so far off the mark where rainfall is concerned.

As I said we had rain predicted every day last week and it fell on two day.  On those two days we had much less (about half) the predicted falls.

I am going to finish with a Batty shot.  He is jealous of all the attention Odie got after my last post and assured me (and you) that he is just as beautiful.  And he does have lovely eyes.

  1. Mai plou al gust de tots. A vegades per massa i altres per massa poc. Aquí hem tingut unes quantes setmanes de pluja sense parar i ja enyorava el solet. ;-)
Les gotes d'aigua són precioses, semblen petits diamants.
I per en Batty: no t'enfadis, ets molt maco. ;-)
    Aferradetes, Sue.

  4. Batty is adorable. I'm glad you got some rain. The birds looked like they enjoyed it. Lovely pictures.

    1. Mary Kirkland: I am glad we got some rain. We need more and more is predicted for next week. Fingers crossed. Batty thanks you - he has a mighty purr too.

  5. Laura Eno - Beautiful fall colors and I love the way you capture the rain drops in your photos!
Of course Batty is a handsome dude. Give him scritches for me and let him know he has nothing to worry about in the attention competition. :D Both kitties are very special.
Weather predictions are truly off the wall, no matter the location. Mine change - often drastically - on a daily basis. I’ve reverted to sticking my hand out the window, so to speak.
Hoping for a well-ish week ahead for both of us. Hugs and love sent your way.

    1. Laura Eno: Looking out the window is often more informative. Fingers and toes crossed next week's predicted rain happens. And yes, a well (ish) week would be lovely. I have spent most of today in bed.

  7. It seems if there is a slightest chance of a shower, BOM will call it. I don't think it likes to hear, But you said there'd be no rain. You still have lots of autumn colour. Batty does have pretty eyes.

    1. Andrew: Our autumn colour is fading but there are still pockets. Our rain forecast is totally accurate when they say things like 90% of less than 1mm.

  8. Batty is indeed just as beautiful as Odie. I love seeing raindrops on things, we get a drizzle now and again overnight so everything is already dry by morning, nor pretty drops to be seen. I think the problem with predicting rain is they can only predict a general area, for instance "Adelaide" but Adelaide is quite spread out and some parts will get rained on while others are as dry as an old bone in the desert. Mostly it depends on how much water the clouds are holding and how fast they move.

    1. River: You might be right - but even our local weather isn't accurate. Sadly we are in a rain shadow here and often miss out. Batty and Odie are both beautiful but very different in looks and character.

Your rain washed area is beautiful and I hope you get more, although not flooding.

  11. Dear EC
I am so pleased to hear that you have had some rain, even if it wasn't as much as you need. We have been the same - a very hot (for the UK at this time of the year) and dry Spring. We have just had some rain, for which we are very grateful, but not enough!
I love the petrichor scent after rainfall too.
Batty is absolutely gorgeous too - you can tell him that from me!
    Best wishes
    Ellie

    1. Ellie Foster: Someone once told me that you can water enough to keep things alive but to get growth you need rain. I think she was pretty accurate - except for the weeds.
Fingers crossed the predicated rain next week happens. And Batty and I thank you.

  12. It seems to be a universal trend in recent years that rain no longer falls as gentle moisture. It is either a deluge or stays away. Recently it rained almost nonstop here for three days and there was localized flooding. I long for those days when my daughter was little and we would take a walk together in warm, misty, gentle rain. It was such a pleasure, and the water was absorbed by the soil, and flowers grew. Now we seem to have baked earth or muck. Thanks for the images of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos. They never fail to thrill me. Hugs - David

    Replies
    1. David M. Gascoigne: There is something magical about a walk in gentle rain isn't there. Sadly we often tend to baked earth here and I don't expect that to ease. You would be very happy to see the sulphur crested vandals here, we often have five or six (and sometimes more) at a time.

  13. Hi EC - oh Batty is just as beautiful ... as you say something about his eyes ... very special. I'm waiting for a good dose of the wet stuff here - we've had a bit ... but not enough in the south-east. They had a deluge of hailstorms in France earlier this week ... such is life ... have a peaceful and blessed week with a few raindrops! Cheers Hilary

    1. Hilary Melton-Butcher: Thank you. I do hope that you (and we) get some more of the wet stuff in life giving rather than taking amounts.

  14. Gorgeous eyes, yes indeed.
The photos are lovely of the raindrops.
It's good to receive rain but not like some areas in NSW. We had rain last night, thank goodness.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Margaret D: Some parts of NSW got more rain in the past week than we have had in literally years. I don't want that, but would be grateful for more. I have a brother near Adelaide who tells me they have had 300mm in the last eighteen months. I believe Taree got that in a night.

  16. He does have lovely eyes! We've had rain almost everyday for a week. Everything is super green, but I kept waiting for a dry day so I could mow. And when I finally got the dry day...boy did it need it. All the rain really made it grow. You captured some nice nature shots, with the fall color. We always laugh that being a weather person is one of the few jobs you can have without being accurate.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sandy: It is amazing how fast things grow after a decent rain fall isn't it? And no, accuracy isn't part of a weather forecaster's job description.

  17. Batty is such a handsome fellow! The first photo made me do a double-take, though - I knew it was Batty, but he looks very seal-like in the photo. So sleek!

Hooray for rain. It's such a blessing! We're just heading into wildfire season here, so I treasure every day that we get a few drops.

    1. Diane Henders: More of a walrus than a seal. There is rather too much of Batty and he strenuously resists attempts to slim him down. He is beautiful though and his fur is lovely.
We are prone to fires here which is part of the reason I love rain. And always welcome it.

  18. Wonderful photos. Rain sure can be pretty.
As to the predictions: temperatures are generally the same over large areas, whereas rain falls in showers. I go shopping 5 kms away, and often I've returned drenched with the rest of the family looking at me in wonder: "But we've had not a drop!" they tell me.

  19. Rain was predicted here and we got a lot. Three days in a row I haven't had to water my herbs. Sadly, most of my herbs prefer a dry Mediterranean climate. I love your autumn colors and raindrops. Just beautiful photos. I was mesmerized.

SO glad you showed Batty. I have missed him. He is a true beauty.

    1. Bleubeard and Elizabeth: Rain will probably do your herbs more good than watering them. Batty is a beauty isn't he? Cross your fingers that we get more rain today.

  20. Sweet Batty, nice to see him.

    I did enjoy your photographs.
    Weather worldwide is concerning.
Here in the UK many areas have not had decent rainfall for quite some time and we are not in summer yet. Many reservoirs are much lower than they should be at this time of year. I jokingly keep saying I will do a rain dance ... if only that would help.

    Sending my good wishes.

    All the best Jan

    1. Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. If only a rain dance by me could be effective... If only. I am sorry that parts of the UK also need rain.

I love seeing raindrops hanging on branches and plants, and you have captured them nicely. It's too bad you didn't get more rain. If only we could take the extremes of weather around the world and spread them more evenly to everyone.
