This
meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Computer issues led her
to bow out for a while. The meme was too much fun to let go, and now
Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a
movable feast.
Essentially
the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice
of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we
do with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a
poem, or treating them with ignore... We can use some or all of the
prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.
Some
of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on
their own blog. I would really like it if as many people as possible
joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.
The prompts will be here this month but are provided by Alex J. Cavanaugh
Alex rarely plays but has very generously provided us with with some intriguing/testing prompts.
This week's prompts were drawn from metal and prog bands and are:- Fates
- Warning
- Armored
- Saint
- Dynasty
And/or
- Wolfheart
- Serenity
- Dream
- Theater
- Voyager
Have fun.
More fun words by Alex.
ReplyDeleteHave a great one, with plenty of energy and no discomfort, EC:)
Hugs
Sandra Cox: Thank you. I am definitely hoping for energy without pain and nausea.
DeleteHe knew that the fates had it in for him. He was going to fail English. Again. His class had been taken to the theatre to see/endure yet another production of Romeo and Juliet. The armoured battleaxe who taught them had taken him to one side and hissed ‘ Eric this is your last warning. You will watch the play and write a 500 word essay about your experience, using quotes from the master’s work.’
ReplyDeleteOh he knew what was expected of him/them; a 500 word tribute to Saint Shakespeare. Dream on sunshine, he was going to take the assignment literally and write a very personal essay.
‘What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’
Wrong, wrong and wrong. Would his teacher smile if he gave her a bunch of roses called Stench? She wouldn’t but he would. And the name would make all the difference to both of them.
His parents had named him Eric John. And by so doing had ensured he would become part of the family dynasty. As Eric J. Burton (the third) he would become a chartered accountant. His life would be totally predictable. Serenity/boredom from beginning to end.
If only they had named him Erik Wolfheart instead. With a name like that he would have been destined to be a voyager. A voyager to other countries and cultures, who pillaged the best from them and discarded the rest…
Thank you and Alex beautifully stated and more fun reading through your blog.
DeleteFantastic EC!!! Love this write! Big Hugs!
DeleteEric WOlfheart! Dig it.
DeleteI enjoyed reading your story. Yes, What's in a name. Well done Elephants's Child
DeleteHugs, Julia
I was already wondering what to do with Wolfheart, never having come across the expression, and you are giving me ideas. I was thinking of it as the opposite of faint heart - sort of. I guess if push comes to shove I can leave that one word out.
DeleteSo good. How I would love to be named Erica Wolfheart. That is a name given by parents who love their child and expect great things of her.
DeleteLove,
Janie
Somehow i think Eric will manage to let that Wolfheart out.
DeleteI am also thinking of Wolfheart as a name, but haven't found the rest of my story yet.
DeletePoor Eric. But very well written.
DeleteI live with an accountant, but he is only a Jr. We had 3 sons and there is not a third , nor an accountant gene in the bunch. Poor Eric! Love the way you woe the prompts into your story.
DeleteI love this! Your dry humor always shines through.
DeleteI enjoyed that Sue. Accounting can be boring but it will keep Eric employed.
DeleteExcellent to take the mickey out of Shakespeare ... love it - just plain fun and with a different take ... such fun - hope you're feeling easier - stay safe - Hilary
DeleteWhat a fun story that was, E.C.! I agree with poor Eric that being called "Eric Wolfheart" would have led to a more appealing and exciting destiny.
DeleteAnd an Eric Wolfheart would just be a dude with an interesting surname. :D It's all about the 'k', baby!
DeleteBea: You are so right - which is why I used that k.
DeleteBravo! You kept me reading and I was intrigued.
ReplyDeleteAlex came up with some great words.
Have a wonderful rest of the week!
~Jess
Brunhilda’s not an armored saint
ReplyDeleteThough she wore a tin brassiere.
And sang in many a theater,
As warning to all who hear,
“Don’t tempt the fates,
All ye who dream in sweet serenity,
Or you’ll have a splitting headache,
If you listen long to me”.
The Blog Fodder: Love it - and why am I thinking of Madonna.
DeleteThis great!!! Love reading this!
DeleteFunny!
DeleteBlog Fodder I'm thinking of Madonna also. I can almost hear the singing... Well done.
DeleteVery creative.
DeleteHeeheehee!
DeleteLove it :)
DeleteYes! Brunhilda often looks like an armoured saint!
DeleteGreat!
DeleteFun - clever ... well done ... Hilary
DeleteThis was great! I thought of Madonna, too. Remember that book cover?
DeleteExcellent words by Alex again! Big Hugs EC!
ReplyDeleteMagic Love Crow: We have two MORE excellent week of words from Alex too.
DeleteWarning! An armored saint ahead! Your fates are controlled by his dynasty.
ReplyDeleteMike: An armoured saint? Unusual, but no doubt sometimes necessary. Being a saint isn't easy, and the process of becoming one is sometimes very painful.
DeleteI have to say why not ... but Ec clarifies ... all the best to you both - Hilary
DeleteGraham hoisted his sword and roared, "I am Wolf Heart, warrior for St. Christopher and St. Benedict." All around him lay humbled and shaking villagers. "I bring to you dire warning about the fates who seek all voyagers."
ReplyDelete"But, Sir Graham, we live a life of serenity in this land of dreams. We are armored with truth and honor." Others rose and nodded in agreement.
Sir Graham rolled in laughter. "I have never before met a dynasty of idiots." He sheathed his sword and road off. Laughter trailed after him.
Susan Kane: Perhaps it is just me, but I really don't like Sir Graham. He strikes me as rude, and perhaps some research is needed. Great use of the prompts though.
DeleteSir Graham might need those villagers someday, i've seen it happen.
DeleteStrange story, it sounds like the beginnig of a fantasy novel. I hope you continue it.
DeleteOh Sir Graham must have never heard the old adage of being kind to those you meet on your way up, because you might meet them again on your way down.
DeleteHi Susan - so glad he rolled with laughter and went quietly on his way ... they were lucky to be rid of him ... all the best - Hilary
DeleteLaurie: There are, and I love seeing them play out.
ReplyDeleteGot it, working on it, will be back soon.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteSorry, trying again.
DeleteMine will be over here
messymimi: Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
DeleteI'll give this some thought, have already decided to use Wolfheart as a name, just need the rest of the story to fall into place.
ReplyDeleteRiver: I am looking forward to your take too.
DeleteNothing come to the mind immediately :)
ReplyDeleteMargaret D: Give it time...
DeleteIn Finland, I boarded the Cruise ship VOYAGER and was looking forward to the culinary delights, comfortable accommodation and vivid night time entertainment. This was a very special cruise as most of the passenger were aboard including myself because they followed the band WOLFHEART that played Winter Metal music.
ReplyDeleteEvery evening the passengers crowded into the tiered seating, like a THEATER to enjoy the musicality of this brilliant band.
Every morning I rose early and before partaking of a superb traditional English breakfast I walked around the deck to soak in the peace and SERENITY of the beautiful Finnish landscape and listen to the lapping of the ship gliding through the calm waters. Not many passengers were around at that time of the morning however on one occasion, I met the leader of the band who surprisingly stopped to talk to me. Having been a fan of their music for a long time, this was nothing short of a DREAM come true for me. We chatted, amongst other things, about the upcoming release and his unique Amfisound guitar.
Margaret Birding For Pleasure: Dreams should come true - at least sometimes. I really like this.
DeleteThis is a well written piece on a dream come true.
DeleteVery nice take on the prompts!
DeleteWell done!
DeleteHi Margaret - clever take on the prompts ... and what a great realisation ... all the best - Hilary
DeleteThose prompts had me chewing my pencil. But here are the results.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte (MotherOwl): You chewed your pencil very, very successfully. Thank you.
DeleteWorking on this. x
ReplyDeleteaussie aNNie: I look forward to seeing where the prompts take you.
Delete"The Eye of the Storm" by Wolfheart, could be heard faintly in the background as the armored saint approached. There was no serenity in the voyager's approach as she issued a dire warning that a dynasty, using the entire world as its theater was about to rise. The fates of everyone were at stake.
ReplyDeleteThen I woke. What a weird dream!
p.s. This is in no way intended to be political. It is just a way to use the prompts
Anne in the kitchen: I didn't take your use of the prompts as political - and was unsurprised that you knew about Wolfheart. If a saint needs armour, dire times are ahead. Great use of the prompts.
DeleteDreams are what they are. Excellent use of the prompts.
DeleteWell done Anne ... stay safe - Hilary
DeleteWarning! … the Fates are against us … Warring will do no good, armouring ourselves equally useless … quite honestly I’ve no idea if becoming a saint will help … only future Dynasties will be able to unravel. Live life happily while you can …
ReplyDeletestay safe and serene too ... Hilary
Hilary Melton-Butcher: I hope the future dynasties can and do unravel. Your snippet has set my mind wandering - thank you.
DeleteWarning taken!
DeleteGood advice and great use of the prompts.
DeleteGood job, Hils!
DeleteBuona serata.
ReplyDeleteGiancarlo: Thank you.
DeleteHe may have thought of himself as a WOLFHEART, but in reality he was (and is) a snivelling, small-minded, self-centred, narcissistic creep. The WARNINGS were there, plain to see, yet with SERENITY and slavish devotion, people by the millions voted for him. He barely needed to DREAM of creating a DYNASTY, his sycophants and enablers were willing to start it for him. In this THEATRE of the absurd principles were sacrificed, idealism was lost, political opportunism reigned supreme, and SAINTS were hard to find. A few were ARMOURED with the steel of virtue, but they suffered at the hands of blowhards and ne’er-do-wells. Honour and dignity were confused with disloyalty. Disloyalty to what? Mendacity? The hunger for power? Victory at all costs? Destruction of the nation’s ideals?
ReplyDeleteThe FATES will look kindly on those brave resisters, on those lonely, courageous VOYAGERS under the banner of truth, dignity and the willingness to stand up for what is right regardless of the cost. History will judge them well, mark my words.
David M. Gascoigne: This is sadly true of many a self styled wolfheart. The world over. It says nothing good about our species behaviour or judgement.
DeleteGood one.
DeleteThere always have been such, and always will be. It is sad and difficult to deal with.
DeleteHi David - I bet he did ... and I sincerely hope we don't have to wait for history to judge them/him ... the Fates need to look after us ... stay safe - Hilary
DeleteHistory has an unhappy habit of repeating itself
DeleteI love this. Well said and loaded with truisms.
ReplyDeleteThe fates are warning against the armored saint dynasty!
ReplyDeleteCloudia: I do hope we listen to the fates - they are wise - even if we don't always like what they have to say.
DeleteGood prompts and nice pieces.
ReplyDeleteAuthors with Advice: Alex gave us some excellent prompts didn't he?
DeleteI am sorry and bit surprised that you have to wait so long for your vaccine. Your MS doesn't put you in a "high Risk" category? We are early because of our age and also because we both have issues that put us at high risk. It is a relief, though, I have been told the second shot leaves you with a few days of flu like systems ... not looking forward to that :( Hope all else is well with you. Always appreciate that you come to see my "art" and you always see more in it that I do :) Be safe Sue, and keep me posted on how you are doing.
ReplyDeleteAndrea @ From the Sol
Andrea @From The Sol: No one in my country will get vaccinated before the end of this month. I think I am in the second or third tranche, but no details are available yet. I hope any reaction you have to the second dose is minimal.
DeleteBuon fine settimana.
ReplyDeleteGiancarlo: Thank you.
DeleteAwesome article guys :)
ReplyDeleteAzka Kamil: Thank you too.
DeleteThat kangaroo looks fierce and ready to poouce at the photographer!! Be careful, I hear they have tails that can swipe well and have seen pixs of them BOXING too. I like you mossy patch with lichens too. I read that lichens only grow in areas where the air is pure and unpolluted.
ReplyDeletekestrel: Kangaroos need to be treated with caution (and I have seen them balancing on their tail and kicking out at each other) but attacks on humans are very rare. Which is fortunate.
DeleteOur air quality is mostly good, and I do love the lichen.
The fates gave a warning
ReplyDeletethere's only one saint in your dynasty
be forever armored and warned.
Linda Starr: I hope that there are many more saints. we need them.
Delete
