Sunday Selections

Sunday Selections, brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, is an ongoing theme where participants post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Anyone can join in, just post your photos under the Sunday Selections title, link back to Kim, then add your name to her Linky list at Frogpondsrock.

I have been featuring the birds who visit us for a while now.  This week the birds I am putting up are galahs.  They are another bird with heaps of character and have a 'tough boy swagger' that always makes me smile.  In a comment on my last post Kath asked 'Is there such a thing as a whingeing wildlife bird?'.  Well yes, fledgling galahs are whinging masters.

A miserable bird on a miserable day.

The lighter coloured bird on the right is a fledgling - caught with its whinging mouth shut - which is a miracle.

This White Galah is an abberration, which shouldn't exist.  We saw it quite often a few years ago, but have not seen it in a while now.

I have never seen a wetter bird.  Perhaps it was birds like this one, too silly to shelter from the rain, which gave rise to the phrase 'you stupid galah'.

  1. I love that "miserable bird on a miserable day". Can't help but laugh. Happy New Year to you. May your garden flourish! nxx

  3. Anon (n): That poor bird - you laugh at the oddest things (but then so do I).

mybabyjohn/Delores: Thank you. They are a joy.

  4. Yes, they're whingers alright. One always gets the impression that they have a chip on their shoulder - in contrast with the more confident cockatoos, parrots and cheeky rosellas. Although that poor very wet soul deserves our sympathy. I enjoy these photos... Happy New Year

  5. First timer here so will be stalking your back posts.
We are flora and fauna lovers too.
I like your bird feeder and will be on to my blokey bloke to make a few. Good to give away too.
I am so sorry that MS is in your life. A lovely friend who suffers has given up her meds and now takes 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day. She reports much improvement and her brain is not fuzzy.
Also, diet Coke can give you Lupus and MS symptoms. Just passing that on as I think anything shared is a good thing.

    Well.... knowledge, that is!
    Best wishes for 2012

  6. Christine: The fledgling galahs go on and on and on and on. And on. Chalk down a blackboard is nothing to them. They still have charm though. Perhaps their bully boy swagger is to address their inferiority complex?! And I did feel so sorry for that very soggy bird.

Lydia La La: Welcome. I don't drink either Coke or diet Coke but will look into the coconut oil suggestion. And you are right - shared knowledge never goes astray. Happy New Year to you too.

  7. Is that pronounced Galler?, My daughter (4) has an imaginery friend called Galla . . He's a bit of a bully and a whinger . . . How bizarre.
O well Happy new year. I've only just found your blog . . So will need to catch up a bit.

  8. That last drowned bird is just hilarious and I have heard people called a 'whingeing galah' so many times that it must have come from somewhere.

How long did that bird sit there like that?

  9. bugerlugs63: Welcome. Love your name - my father used to refer to people as buggerlugs, and I haven't heard the term since he died. G'lar just about covers the Aussie swallowing of consanants. Gal ah will do just s well. And a happy new year to you.

JahTeh: While not precisely muscial the adults don't whinge. The fledglings more than make up for it. And thanks - I had forgotten whingeing galah,

As you can see in the photo it was raining steadily. He sat there for at least half an hour from memory, making no attempt to find shelter - the only bird in sight.

  10. Poor fella that miserable bird you gotta feel sorry for he/she. There's a flock of galahs that feed down by the footy ground and creek that is surrounded by native trees and really make quite a noise sometimes, all the same they are a delight to watch while on my morning walk :-).

  11. Windsmoke: They are a delight aren't they? Each and every noisy one of them.

  12. LOL That last one is such a soaking wet feather duster!
If the baby Galahs are anything like the whinging juvenile Rainbow Lorikeets, I share your aural pain!

  13. Well there's a phrase I've never heard. :) A lovely shade of pink, that bird.

  14. Jayne: Rainbow Lorikeets are very rare visitors here, but the young galahs are truly awful at mega decidels.

Lynn: It was galahs which first showed me how well pink and grey go together. They are a very pretty bird.

  18. The birds in your part of the world are endlessly fascinating to me. I am learning something new every time I come over here. And the pictures are great!

I'm so glad that things are looking up in your household and that Hubby is progressing well. Your friendship has brightened my past year and I look forward to 2012 being the same or better! :-)

  19. We get loads of them here, often as we pass the local racecourse there will be 50 or more feeding there. I can't say that I have ever seen any soggy, wet ones though. They DO look miserable!

  20. DJan: Thank you so much. I really, really enjoy my vicarious hikes with you. And that is the only way I could enjoy them.
    Happy 2012 to you.

permanently amanda: We have had nearly fifty on our front lawn. The wet ones were on their own though.
