Sunday Selections #435

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme.  My manically busy weeks have continued.  I have had appointments some of them ugly (an MRI and root canal therapy definitely fall into the ugly category) almost every day.  The busyness will continue for at least the next week.

So I have been looking to the sky for solace.  And finding it too.

And of course the visiting birds continue to give me joy.

In the middle of the activity we made time to go to the National Gallery for a Monet exhibition.  Which will get a post of its own later.   Some of you will remember Franscico 2017 by Urs Fischer which I described as a million dollar candle.  I had to detour to check it out again.

This is how we saw it last, and the next photo was from our most recent visit.

I think it its current state it could feature in a horror movie.  I assume it will be recast soon.

We headed home via the lake for the obligatory kangaroo fix.

As always, they were totally 'laxed and I found them soothing.

Words for Wednesday

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Computer issues led her to bow out for a while.  The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...  We can use some or all of the prompts.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

The prompts have been here this month.  Huge thanks to everyone who joined in the fun and/or commented.

This week's prompts are, first two phrases:

  1. Bitten off more than he can chew (taken on a task which is too much for him)
  2. Diamond in the rough (a person who is generally of good character but lacks manners, education, or style)

And/or

  1. Welcome
  2. Trigger
  3. Moving
  4. Taller
  5. Essential
  6. Expecting

Have fun everyone.
Next month  Wisewebwoman will be hosting on her blog.  I really look forward to seeing where she takes us.

I usually run with a theme. I have mentionedwhinged that life has been a tad busy of late.  These photos were taken on early morning walks/excursions.  They were all taken with my phone, a camera I rarely use.

It was a pretty morning (and pretty chilly too).

My new bus stop is beside community gardens.  I have never seen anyone in the gardens and the beds looks to be vacant at the moment (though they were full in summer).  The scarecrows are interesting though and I don't think I have seen 'canoodling' scarecrows before.

Two buses later I reached town.  Not only is my bus stop further away, the one in town has also been shifted.  So come wander through the streets with me.

The bearded raven was obviously in familiar territory as the crap stained seat it perched on testified.

This statue is 'Little Big Man' by Dean Bowen.

I do like the splashes of colour.

I think the ACT Memorial (which was commissioned to honour people who have had an association with my city and territory who have served their country in war, confict, peace keeping and humanitarian missions) is an elegant addition.

I like the textured wall to the Commonwealth Bank too.

This nice bus driver was taking the bike for a ride (which stems from a family joke triggered when a work colleague's daughter told her how nice the farmers were always taking their cattle for a drive.)

I liked this painting which filled the window of a shop under renovation too.  The art was sponsored by Transport Canberra (one good thing they are doing) and City Service and a Youth and Community Centre.

The walls of the take-away fish and chip shop have charm as well.

As does this delightful colourful and textured planter.

I am still peeved at the changes to our bus system (and not alone) but I am also seeing parts of the city I didn't see often in the past.  A small positive.

Sunday Selections #433

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

I usually run with a theme.  Last week was busy.  The coming week will be busy.  And the week after will be manic.

So I am sticking close to home with my photos this week.  Winter has finally arrived.  A wimpy winter, but winter just the same.  There is not a lot blooming in the garden, but both the birds and I are enjoying what there is.

Remember the tree dahlias?  The next photo shows what happens when the frost hits them.

A neighbour, who has since died, gave me this lovely iris a few years ago.  I think of him fondly each year when it blooms.  I think he would like that.

I really like this African daisy (Osteospermum).  I like them so much I have bought (and planted) another seven in varying colours.

We have a number of grevilleas.  We like them and the birds love them.  The next photo (not very good) is of a male Eastern Spinebill.  I hope to get better photos of this charmer soon.  He is a regular visitor to the grevilleas but quick and camera shy.

There have been foggy mornings.  The dampness of the fog gave me this beauty.

Finishing with more visiting birds, beauty and sadness.

You know that I love our Sulphur Crested Cockatoos - despite them being noisy and incontinent vandals.

While this bird is healthy we have also been visited by one suffering from Beak and Feather Disease.

This disease apparently can affect all parrots though I have only seen cockatoos with it.  They lose their feathers and their beaks can grow to the extent that they can no longer eat or drink.

Heartbreaking isn't it?  In the past we have captured birds with the disease and taken them to the RSPCA for a quick and gentle end.  Sadly this one could still fly and evaded us.  I haven't seen him for a few days and assume he has died.

I will finish on a nicer note, with a healthy happy male King Parrot.

I hope your weeks are packed with beauty.
