Words for Wednesday

The lovely Delores at Under the Porch Light has been running this meme for a considerable period of time, week after week.   She was having issues with her computer freezing on her (much as my brain does when faced with some of her words).  She asked that someone take over on a temporary basis and I stuck my hand up.
Sadly, Delores has now decided that the time has come for her to 'fade out' of the blogosphere.  She will pop in from time to time, but is reclaiming a life away from the computer.  She will be missed.  Badly missed.
I was happy to provide the prompts on a temporary basis but don't want to do so permanently, not least because when I provide the words I am too close to them and can't find any impetus to play myself.
So I have some questions for you all:
Should the meme continue? ( I hope so.)
Does it need to be weekly or would fortnightly be enough?
Would anyone else like to take over providing the prompts?
Or, would anyone like to share providing them?  Say for a month or so at a time?
Can you give it some thought and respond in the comments.

This week the meme continues here.
Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...
Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.
This weeks prompts:

Choke

Respect

Smash

Airplane

Royal

Spring

And/or

Good

Eye

Burly

Alarm

Stick

Rebel

  5. The meme should definitely continue and perhaps several of us could take turns, you one week, me the next week, someone else on week three and so on; or we could take a month each. You've done June, so I'll do July and someone else could do August...anyone out there willing? Please?

    1. River: Thank you. If you will do July that will be lovely. I will put up a post tomorrow about the wonderful offers we have had.

  6. I found these words mind stimulating but have too much on my plate to assist.

the burly man opened his good eye the one that wasn't poked out with a stick, he hated to hear the alarm and felt like smashing the alarm and choking whoever turned it on, then he remembered it was himself who set the alarm and that he had an airplane to catch. He was to meet the royal family at their spring gala and show his respect but he hoped he could contain the rebel in himself at the event.

  8. Here I go....

Montana could be a “rebel” at times, much to the “alarm” of her parents. However, they kept a “good” “eye”on her and there was no way they wouldn’t "stick" by their only daughter; their only surviving child.

Montana could be a “royal” pain in the butt often, but, regardless of her faults she always showed "respect” to her parents, particularly in the three years following that “spring”; the “spring” their world came crashing down.

Even now just thinking about the “smash” made Montana withdraw from those around her; and the sight of an “airplane”, even a picture of one in a newspaper, made her “choke”.

She knew she’d forever grieve the loss of her older brother. Brett had been a "burly" young bloke. He could be quite brusque and didn't suffer fools, but he loved his sister. He would have protected Montanta to the end of the earth.

  9. Oh Delores decision breaks my heart but I am sure we have all been there at one time or another and most have returned because there is a lot of love here. I will miss Delores while she is gone but I hope she will be back. About the meme I read it every week but never find time to participate so I don't think I should get a vote. Hug B

  11. It takes time to think of these that I don't have every day. I've played a couple of times and enjoy seeing what others come up with, but I think once a week is too often. How about every other week? And sharing the duties makes sense to me. :-)

  13. First of all - a huge round of applause for Delores for providing words for as long as she did - and many, many thanks to you EC for stepping up to fill in temporarily. In fact, quite coincidentally, before I learned of Delores's decision, the post I scheduled for today includes a tribute to this challenge and you both!
    http://www.ofeverymoment.com/2015/06/words-for-wednesday-exactly-one-year.html

I have benefited from these word prompts, (both creatively and as a way to meet a wonderful new set of bloggers) and I would like to see them continue. Every other week (fortnightly!) is about the best that I have ever managed to participate, so I could be content with that or whatever this group decides. Volunteers are usually hard to come by - it is impressive that we already have through August covered!

With different "administrators" of the words each week, all of us with a different group of followers, I am wondering how we would provide the blog links of where to go each month? Perhaps in a list within the short summary introduction of the Words each month?? Or hopefully someone has a better idea.

I would be happy to take over for the month of September, and will provide words either weekly or every other week, whatever is decided!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Susan F.: It will be challenging - but I think will be worth the effort. I like River's idea of linking to the next administrator at the end of the month. And I love the idea that different blogs will entice different people to play. Thank you so much for volunteering for September.

  14. Alex got that one in a lick.
I'm sorry to learn about Delores. This shouldn't be a burden for you, whatever you decide. Sometimes, I look at the words and say, "No can do." Other times, something spews forth. Maybe different people could provide words, as Alex suggests, but that means coordination is required. I'd say, no worries if you let this one go. We have plenty in blogland to keep us entertained.

  16. I had to compromise, LOL. The Airplanes engines choked and stuttered billowing smoke into the spring air. "Battle stations" cries the Captain to his cabin crew. "We're going smash into the hanger" quips the first officer, thumping the console, continuing "Respect! brother! We going down!" Maria rolls her eyes in her head. "You've break the Royal Airplane! Never give up, never surrender!"

  17. Hi Sue Now I know I have emailed you regarding this meme and I would certainly like it continued WEEKLY. As you know, my non blogging friend Sue who also has contributed would like it to continue. I have offered to supply you with words for a month and I see that the months of July, August and September have now been covered and a few others said they would help. Put me done for the month of October and if we had a few other to help, the peple who have offered, will only have to do it twice a year. Now that is not to much for this delightful meme to continue. EC (Sue) has said she can do the meme administration work from her end so all we bloogers need to do is think of the words!!

Now my friend Sue in N. Ireland adn myself this week set ourselves a challenge with the words in that we had to use all the words in one story, so here goes.

While working as a undercover agent, I was commissioned to provide top security to HRH the Princess ROYAL who I have a great deal of RESPECT for, so I jumped on an AIRPLANE to make my way to London from Dubai.

It was a GOOD flight and I was both excited and apprehensive as this was the biggest commission I had undertaken.

As I was sitting in an aisle seat, I was very aware of everyone walking up and down and when a large BURLY man past me several times with a STICK, I wondered why. I tried to catch his EYE however he just kept walking with his head down.

ALARM bells started ringing in my head, and as he passed one of the female air hostesses, he raised his stick, turned round, pulled her close to him, placing the stick on her neck as if to CHOKE her. I am trained to SPRING into action in these kinds of emergencies so as I was near him and behind him, I lifted my dinner tray with piping coffee in it and crashed it down on his head. He had not expected anyone would challenge him so quickly it startled him. He suddenly released the air hostess, in just enough time for me to grab him and land him face down in the aisle. The REBEL was apprehended safely with handcuffs and the passengers cheered with great relief in their voices and I was a SMACK hit in all their eyes.

    1. Margaret Adamson: Love it - and using coffee to put him to sleep (or at least his evil deeds) is a wonderful twist.
I think that River will be putting the words up on her blog, as will Jacqueline.
We will explore this further in a day or so - but I am so pleased and grateful that so many are prepared to help out.

  18. Well here I am again however Sue (my friend from N, Ireladn) has just emailed me her story and guess what she also was on a plane!

Here is her story and I think it is hilarious and although I personnaly was a club scout leader and a nursing Sister, Thank goodness i had never this situation to deal with.

choke, respect, smash, airplane, royal, spring, good, eye, burly, alarm, stick, rebel.

I clung helplessly to the STICK pulling back with all my might. This only happened in films didn't it?

'We don't wish to ALARM you, but the pilot has had a medical emergency, is there a doctor on the plane, or anyone with experience of flying an AIRPLANE?'

This was a small plane with only 8 passengers so the chances of finding a pilot or medico were impossibly slim. However although we just sat and looked at each other with down turned mouths and shrugging shoulders, it occurred to me that someone had to try. I didn't so much SPRING to my feet as peel myself slowly into an upright position.

'I'm a cub scout leader and have some knowledge of first aid, I may be able to help a bit'

I made my way through the narrow aisle to the cockpit where the BURLY pilot was holding his hand over his EYE. He had been in the process of eating a ROYAL mint imperial sweet when he had coughed and begun to CHOKE. In coughing violently he had careened forward and hit his head on the instrument panel and caused his eye to water and the lid to swell. Unfortunately this eye was referred to as his GOOD eye, the other eye being referred to as glass!!

'OK,' the burly pilot said, 'I can't see much but I can probably talk you down'
And this is how I came to be hanging onto the stick, praying and hoping not to SMASH the plane.

'Oh please, please, dear powers that be, let me get down in one piece. I'll be good, I promise to sing in church parade and not be the rebel and just mime. Please, please just let me get down in one piece'.

The mostly blind pilot was talking relatively calmly to me and could now see a little through his watery swollen eye and with a bump, a squeal we were down, and up and down again.

    'Thank you, thank you'
My fellow passengers unclipped and staggered from the plane, some fell and kissed the ground, some quite frankly were violently sick, but all were showing RESPECT for the cub leader who, although still clinging to the joystick while her fingers were prised off the stick one by one, had indeed done her duty and her best and got them to safety.

  19. Here's mine, both lists.
Last spring, if I had been born of Royal blood, I'd have my own airplane and wouldn't be choking on my own breath being pressed against this burly Rebel who clearly just set off the "no smoking" alarm only moments ago by using his hockey stick to smash the sensor.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Karen S.: At least he used his hockey stick and not either body odour or smoking to set off that alarm. I do hope there is a happy ending though...
