Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life. The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
Like River I usually run with a theme. My city is in festival mode at the moment and the Enlighten festival started last Friday. The powers that be have decided in their wisdom to spread it across the city. We went to the Parliamentary Triangle and were a tad disappointed. The buildings are still illuminated but there seems to be a lot less quirky fun and whimsy than other years. Perhaps it has been spread too thin?
Just the same we are glad we went. And may go back again next week.
Many, many photos were taken. And quite a lot of them will probably feature here.
We started at the National Gallery. I do love this orb. It is a permanent feature and I take a photo of it almost every time I see it.
The Night Noodle Markets were on again (of course because it is a money spinner). The queues were long, there was nowhere to sit and the food smelt singed to us. I did like the illuminated lanterns though. A lot.
Unannounced and over virtually before it started there were fireworks at about half-past eight.
The jellyfish was a welcome return to quirkiness. It changed colour and I believe that there are others in the city somewhere.
While they look a little like wasp nests these were musical installations. If you waved your hand near them they made a noise. While lots of people were playing there were no musicians among their ranks...
Despite the lack of whimsy and quirky fun the area looked very different under coloured lights. And the atmosphere was cheerful and the crowd happy. Always a win.
I will show you the illuminated buildings in a later post.
I have missed you in my blog break and over the next little while hope to catch up. I am still coughing, but much, much less now. Not only will I live, it doesn't seem like an imposition.

Hey welcome back!
ReplyDeleteI love the coloured lanterns and the jellyfish. Shame there weren't any musicians playing the wasp nests!
LL Cool Joe: There were a lot of would-be musicians, but talent was missing. The jelly fish was great wasn't it?
DeleteEC! I'm so glad to see you! And so glad you are feeling better. Your last line put a huge grin on my face.
ReplyDeleteThe Enlighten Festival looks like a joyous event - I love these photos, especially that blue lit walkway.
Lynn: It is nice to be back. Very nice. The blogosphere has become a huge part of my life.
DeleteThe jellyfish are outstanding! Lantern lights that aren't red are pretty cool. I'd not wait in line either, but I would photograph those lanterns.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that your city decided to 'spread the joy' of the festival across town. I could see how that might diffuse the panache of the whoe affair somewhat.
Bea: The festival has always been in several locations though in the past paid/unpaid was the deciding factor. The freebies are also spread now. It does reduce the crowd numbers though - which is never a bad thing.
DeleteThe lights alone make it worthwhile. I like the rows of lanterns. And yes, the jellyfish is fun.
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: The jellyfish IS fun isn't it? And there is always room for fun in my world.
DeleteWelcome back...we missed you, too. Those shots of the lights are beautiful...and, like you, I admire the 'orb'.
ReplyDeleteonly slightly confused: It is a replacement orb after the original shattered in a wild storm - but I love it. And it feels good to be back.
DeleteHi EC - good to know you're feeling better and are out and about a bit too. Sad if the festival has been spread too thin ... still it's good you visited and will probably go back - we get to see some lovely photos. Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: I may be jaundiced about how the festival has been spread. The next visit will tell the tale.
DeleteWelcome back! Wish we would have something like your Enlightenment. Especially loved the jellyfish. Yes I was in Costa Rica during your 'break" After traveling to 3 very different locations in 3 months, I will stay put for the next 3 months. The parrots we saw reminded me of your feeder visitors though I assume Central American parrots are completely different species than Australian ones.
ReplyDeleteSue in Italia/In the Land of Cancer: I do admire your travelling gene. I am mostly a home body these days. The Central American parrots would indeed be different to ours - but lovely to see.
DeleteHi EC, welcome back. I enjoyed the pictures you took and look forward to the presence you bring. I always do. It’s good to have you back.
ReplyDeleteTerry: Thank you. Very much.
DeleteI am so glad to see you back, EC. I am smiling!! : )))))))
ReplyDeleteThat was still a great outing. Lots of colour, lots of lights.
Let's have more!
Hugs
Caterina: And a big thank you to you too. There will be more photos. And more colour.
DeleteYou always have so much going on where you live! Thanks for sharing your part of the world. And welcome back!
ReplyDeleteBirdie: Thank you. March is a particularly busy month here. Lots and lots of treats.
DeleteMaybe not as much whimsy, but so lovely nevertheless. I also really love those illuminated lanterns. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: The lanterns really took my eye, and I am very glad you like them too.
DeleteIt's good to have you back. I've only been readig you blog for a couple of months, but you left a hole in the net.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures from your place, lots of colour and fun. Jellyfish and lantern, and also a grey but pretty ball. I know you snapped the highligths and thanks for doing that. How big is that orb?
it's hard to tell with nothing to compare to.
Uglemor: The ord is Diamonds by Neil Dawson and hangs outside the National Gallery. I can't at the moment track down just how big it is, but it is a joy. Its colours change with the light a bit, though it is always subtle.
DeleteI am glad you are not coughing as much, EC. Welcome back.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. So much to take in!
Marie Smith: Thank you. There is indeed a lot to take in at Enlighten - which is part of the reason we will probably go back.
DeleteI'm so glad you are back. It's not the same in blogland without you. I'm glad you are feeling mostly better but that must have been a vicious bug to hang on so tenaciously. Are things cooling off there?
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are very welcome - that orb is especially lovely. There is one shot that looks like a moon rising - is that part of the installation? Looking forward to more!
jenny_o: It was indeed a vicious bug. The doctor told me (bless his unsympathetic heart) that it might go on for up to seven weeks or so. Sadly it is not far off that now. The weather is a bit all over the place, but the nights at least are cooling.
DeleteI snuck the moon picture in, because it shone so delightfully over the festival. Co-incidence, but a pleasant addition.
A very pleasant addition indeed.
DeleteHere's to feeling completely better soon.
jenny_o: Thank you. And on the health front yesterday I got the very first positive news about my brother.
DeleteLove the orb and the tunnel of coloured lanterns. And probably would like other elements, too, but those two stretched my grin.
ReplyDeletedinahmow: I am pretty certain you would find lots to smile at. And when (in the fullness of time) you make it here for the balloon festival we will have to ensure your visit overlaps with Enlighten.
DeleteI'm so glad you're feeling better... if not completely well yet. You were greatly missed. Your blog is the only reason I turn on my computer anymore!
ReplyDeleteLove the orb, lanterns, and wasp/musical instruments! Colored lights are always a beauty to behold. :)
River Fairchild: I am going to get a swollen head reading all these lovely comments. I do like colour. And whimsy. And the little things are huge in my world, but there is room for big things too.
DeleteGlad you are back.
ReplyDeleteI love the lights and once again envy the events you are able to attend. One day I am going to have to post pictures of a something local Will be a cultural difference for sure. No singed smelling foods though since every “event” features barbecue
Anne in the kitchen: Much (but not all) of the food in the Noodle Markets was asian inspired. There was barbecue too - and that was where the singe smell came from. Fat dripping on coals himself told me. And I would love to see photos of any of your local events.
DeleteWelcome back.
ReplyDeleteThe colors are so beautiful. Everything is bright and good.
Joanne Noragon: Splashed of vivid colour are a wonderful mood lifter aren't they?
DeleteFirst up....it's great to have you back, EC. I'm glad you're feeling better...and may you soon be on top of it all and are feeling 100%.
ReplyDeleteI love the lanterns...so colourful.
I hope your week is a good one, getting better as each day passes. Cuddles to Jazz. :)
Lee: Thank you. A busy week ahead. I will be out before dawn tomorrow and not back till lunch. And out early Tuesday and up till late.
DeleteAren't the lanterns vivid? And perfectly placed. Jazz thanks you. I hope you and your furry overlords have a great week.
You always have a talent for a good photo ,.
ReplyDeleteJohn Gray. Thank you. I do love digital cameras. The ability to ditch rotten/out of focus/boring shots is wonderful.
DeleteGreat photos. Glad to see you back.
ReplyDeleteJamie Ghione: Thank you. I hope your writing is going well.
DeleteIt's very good to see you back, EC. Here's hoping that the pesky cough will disappear completely soon! Great pics as always; I love the orb and the jellyfish, and the colourful lanterns are very cheering. Kia kaha!
ReplyDeleteAlexia: Thank you. I imagine you are starting to get excited about seeing your new grandbaby. Which must be very soon now.
Deletehow romantic all the evening lights are, one even looks like Paris, welcome back, you were missed
ReplyDeleteLinda Starr: I hadn't thought of the romance but can see it. It really was a lovely vibe. I don't usually like crowds but Enlighten is such a happy space. And while there is alcohol there, moderation seems to be the rule.
DeleteIt looks like a lovely place for a night out, and i'm glad you are feeling better.
ReplyDeletemessymimi: It is indeed a lovely spot for an outing. And thank you.
DeleteMany happy returns. Pleased to see you back again. Missed you.
ReplyDeleteVest: I missed my friends here in the blogosphere too. Lots.
DeleteSo good to see you back!
ReplyDeleteAnd extra good that life is not an imposition :)
kylie: That lurgy jaundiced my attitude for quite some time. Which shames me a little.
DeleteSo glad to hear your better! and with a colorful post. I love the lanterns, wasp sounds, jellyfish...so pretty
ReplyDeleteKim Standard: I do love colour and I am glad to share it - and thank you.
DeleteWelcome back Lady, It's sure good to see you back.
ReplyDeleteThere were sure a lot of colors and if the crowd was happy, I would want to go back again also.
Jimmy: Thank you. It has become an annual pilgrimage and treat. And a happy crowd is very welcome.
DeleteI am relieved to have you back. I was worried and about to email you to see if you were OK. Try some honey for that cough. That helps me. I absolutely love these photos. The colors are stimulating and gorgeous. Sounds like a fine festival to me. I hope you are back to feeling good soon.
ReplyDeleteGlenda Council Beall: Thank you. We discovered this festival a few years ago, and it has become an annual pilgrimage. And one we look forward to attending a couple of times each year.
DeleteI love the orb too. The coloured lanterns are nice but the best is the Jellyfish. Welcome back. I'm coughing too, a never ending dry cough which I'm told is a side effect of the blood pressure tabs. If it becomes a problem I can get different tabs, but my appointment isn't until mid May :( and the coughing is more than annoying now.
ReplyDeleteRiver: I hope that cough eases. It seems though that the medication is doing good things as well as the bad.
DeleteSo glad to be here and to know you're better! Welcome back.
ReplyDeleteLove the orb and the jellyfish especially. Quirky and light make an irresistible combo.
Nilanjana Bose: Thank you. That orb is a beautiful thing, as was the one it replaced.
DeleteNice to have you back. Good fireworks photo and I love the jellyfish. I certainly took some photos of the orb. Perhaps the wasp nests were Theremins? Yes, that will send many to Google. Think of the theme music for Midsomer Murders.
ReplyDeleteAndrew: Add me to the list of people who had to go to Google to check out Theremin. And yes, you are probably right. I suspect that a musician could have done wonderful things with them.
DeleteWow, colourful. Yes, I love the orb, marvelous.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: Bright and beautiful. Which is lovely.
DeleteBeautiful as always and welcome back! I have a dear friend in Brisbane for work now. She says it is hot and humid, but quite lovely otherwise.
ReplyDeleteJono: My partner has family in Brisbane. It is ALWAYS hot and humid. I hope your friend has a wonderful time though.
DeleteSo glad you're feeling better! Love love these colourful shots.
ReplyDeleteLady Fi: Thank you. I have been missing the blogosphere badly.
DeleteAlways great to see your witty posts, and perfect pictures EC, and glad you're on the mend. Those illuminated lanterns are so colorful and lovely, and to have them all in one place like that is pretty amazing. Ironically, I didn't know they existed, but I just received a jellyfish plant, that thankfully needs very little care.(lol) HUGE Hugs and Happy Sunday! RO
ReplyDeleteRO: Thank you so much. I don't know the jellyfish plant and will have to investigate.
DeleteSuper interesting.
ReplyDeleteI loved the colors.
I loved meeting you.
Good week-end entry.
janicce.
A Casa Madeira ~Janicce: Welcome and thank you.
DeleteBeautiful pictures of a beautiful event.
ReplyDeleteTake care of yourself. As you said, living isn’t an imposition, no matter what.
Friko: Thank you too. And no, life isn't an imposition. I wasn't serious at all.
DeleteColor and lights always get me excited, love them. I like the lanterns and the octopus. I'm glad you are back but understand the break.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: They brighten the darkest mood don't they? I like the temperatures in winter, but loathe the dark.
DeleteBeautiful shots very colourful. That cough does stick around:(
ReplyDeleteFunny the same bug is on both sides of the pond:) Take care, B
Buttons Thoughts: The bug is a beast isn't it? I hope yours is also very nearly gone.
DeleteVery pretty night shots!
ReplyDeleteSharon: Thank you. It is a very pretty festival.
DeleteHappy to see you back in Blogland and love the beautiful photos you shared for Sunday Selections:-)
ReplyDeleteGranny Annie: Thank you. It is good to be back.
DeleteYou have such beautiful venues to attend down under. Hope you are going to enjoy your fall???
ReplyDeletedonna baker: I am going to love Autumn. The days are still warmer than I like but the nights are cooling down fast. And sleep is much, much easier.
DeleteThese were incredible photos! I especially liked the "orb", the lanterns at the night noodle market, and the jellyfish. What a wonderful festival.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Varadan, Author: I do love the orb. Some day I will count up just how many photos of it I have taken over the years. Last year, birds nested in it. I wonder whether they will return?
DeletePS: Glad to see you blogging again. Hope your health is good.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Varadan, Author: Thank you. As summer departs my health will continue to improve.
DeleteLovely photos and all those great, bright colors.
ReplyDeleteRasma Raisters: Thank you. Aren't the colours a joy?
DeleteYes, how wonderful to see your post, I've missed you. These photos are stunning, colors and lighting, and if I could pop into the second one oh I would in a second. What a lovely stroll that would be. Sure hope all is well, take care.
ReplyDeleteKaren S.: That blue light changed to green and red as well. And I loved it too. I am pretty certain you would find a lot to enjoy at the Enlighten festival.
DeleteSo glad you're back! I've definitely missed you!
ReplyDeleteMarty K.
Marty K: I am definitely back - and missed people while I was away. Big time.
DeleteYou have been missed Dear! 💓💓
ReplyDeleteCloudia: Thank you so much.
DeleteYou have such glorious festivals.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back. I'm so glad you're feeling better.
I missed you too.
Take care.
Rawknrobyn: My boring city does festivals well doesn't it? More treats to come too.
DeleteI have just read your post and am wishing painful (and incurable) hemmorhoids on Dude the Third and his less than stellar new love.
I'm sorry that the display was underwhelming for you, but it had a wealth of nice visuals. Thanks for sharing them. It took my tired brain a little while to process that first sphere.
ReplyDeleteAnd welcome back, EC! I missed you.
John Wiswell: I do have the very nicest of blog friends. Thank you. And indeed thank you all.
DeleteLovely Skype love From Poland
ReplyDeleteGosia k: Thank you.
DeleteGood to see the lights burning bright
ReplyDeleteover here where you are.
I love how you shine:)
Hope the turn of season is treating you well.
Love and big joyful gulps of good air to you,
Jennifer
Jennifer Richardson: The lights are indeed shining brightly. Much more brightly than I am, and the turn of the season is very, very welcome.
DeleteWhat a wondrous event. I just loved the photos.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! We missed you and left the light on for you.
Sandra Cox: Thank you so much. There will be more photos to come. Probably many more.
DeleteExcellent.
DeleteHi, I just popped over here from another blog. Loved learning something about you. And I enjoyed these gorgeous photos. Look forward to reading more. You seem to have a rich life and it's clear that you have many readers who appreciate your sharing it!
ReplyDeleteGalen Pearl: Welcome and thank you. I am so very grateful for the warmth and the generosity I have found in the blogosphere.
DeleteDear EC, so glad you are back. I missed you. And I'm relieved that you are feeling--somewhat--better. These colds and the flu take hold and linger and often in the past I'd felt their after effects for maybe 6 weeks. So I"m hoping that you will shake off the cough soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lights and the quirky! Peace.
Dee: I am glad to be back. And excited that your next book is nearly here. Hugs.
DeleteI missed you and your beautiful photographs. I LOVE the jellyfish ♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteCarol Kilgore: The jellyfish is fun isn't it? And no stingers either.
DeleteWow and Wow! You outdid yourself with this post. Must be all the rest you had over your break. Glad you're back and glad you had some time to get away.
ReplyDeletecleemckenzie: Thank you. This is a local festival and is less than half an hour from home. And I am pretty certain we will be back before it finishes.
DeleteLOTS of colour and life there.
ReplyDeleteMerle............
Merlesworld: There is. And it is lovely to see fun in the Parliamentary Triangle.
DeleteWelcome back! You have been missed!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are amazing! What a beautiful experience!! A gorgeous festival!
Keep taking care of yourself!!! Sorry you still have a cough! Big Hugs!
Magic Love Crow: Thank you so much. The festival is a happy snapper's dream date.
DeleteI was just saying to myself, where is Elephant's Child, and then I see this :) Glad you feel like you're among the living again. Lovely, lovely illuminations.
ReplyDeletemshatch: I am back. Still reading, still snapping away with the camera. And thank you.
DeleteNice colourful pictures of the celebrations. I like the jellyfish. Nice to see you back blogging. I've been a bad blogger too recently.
ReplyDeleteShammickite: Sometimes life gets in the way. Which is right and proper.
DeleteWelcome back :)
ReplyDeletePretty colours, always nice to see.
Margaret-whiteangel: Thank you. I really like colour. Lots and lots of colour.
DeleteElephant's Child, those sure are great photos, but most of all, I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling better and that you're back to blogging again!
ReplyDeleteLon Anderson: Thank you so much. I really like the people I have met here in the blogosphere. I was always coming back.
DeleteAll the pics are great, but I love the deep, bright blue in the second picture.
ReplyDeleteHave a day filled with sparkle.
Sandra Cox: That blue was incredible wasn't it? Bright and beautiful.
DeleteThere's so much in the way of festivals colour light and art where you live, it's wonderful, and I always enjoy seeing it through your eyes. X
ReplyDeleteAll Consuming: My city does festivals well - particularly at this time of year. And I do love it.
DeleteThat jellyfish is fun:)
ReplyDeleteIs the cough better today?
Sandra Cox: Nope. Still hanging on.
DeleteDang. It's a tenacious little sucker isn't it?
DeleteSandra Cox: Yup. Too tenacious by half.
DeleteWELCOME BACK!!! We missed you, too. I hope that nasty cough leaves you soon.
ReplyDeleteYour pics are terrific, as always. If I had to pick a favorite, it'd be a toss-up between the jellyfish and the moon. Now THAT kind of jellyfish, I'd like to see. :)
Susan: Thank you. I am hoping to see a flock/mob/whatever the collective noun is of those jellyfish later this week.
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful! The jellyfish and the orb were my favorite. I'm so glad you're back and hopefully that cough will be a thing of the past soon. Sending positive vibes your way!
ReplyDeleteElsie
Elsie Amata: Thank you. I do love that orb. So much. And it looks different with the time of the day and the weather.
DeleteI am so glad that you are feeling better each day. Yeah!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful festival. Those nests have me curious- I want to hear what they sound like. The jellyfish is a fun sight! I love the orb too. Looks like a lovely place to visit.
Thanks for sharing. Sending hugs and healing thoughts. :)
~Jess
DMS ~Jess: Hugs and healing thoughts are very welcome. The wasps were just noise while we were there, but I suspect musicians could have created something incredible with them.
DeleteThe pictures are wonderful. Would love to be there. It's must be such a visual treat.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're feeling better. Stay well.
Myrna R.: It is a visual treat - and we hope to get back to see more this evening. And next week there will be balloons. Another huge treat.
DeleteThe musical installations sound like a delight.
ReplyDeleteSandra Cox: I hope that when we go back tonight they are being played on by people with some musical ability.
DeleteWonderful colors and textures and great stimulation after you've been under the weather...I cannot believe I did not see this post sooner. Hugs!
ReplyDeletee: Thank you. You are always welcome here. Hugs gratefully received and reciprocated.
DeleteJust popping in to admire the colorful lanterns again, and to wish you a Happy Friday! Hugs...RO
ReplyDeleteRO. Thank you. We were out again last night, and there is more colour to come. I hope your weekend is lovely.
DeleteHello my dear friend EC!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to know you are feeling better! Just a good news!
Love your photos as always!
Lots of hugs and much Love to you!
sonia a. mascaro: Thank you so much. I am so lucky with the people I have found/who have found me here in the blogosphere.
DeleteYay you're back! And what an illuminating post you've shared, complete with beaut images and your insightful, witty comments. A treat, as always
ReplyDeleteKim: I am indeed back. And glad to be so. And so very grateful for the kindness I receive.
DeleteWelcome back ...
ReplyDeleteGreat selection of photographs.
So pleased that you said the atmosphere was cheerful and the crowd happy. It makes for a good time out!
Sending my good wishes.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. I hope your house move didn't drain you too much.
DeleteHeipsan, for a long time.
ReplyDeleteThese photos are wonderful.
Hugs
orvokki: Thank you.
DeleteOh those illuminated lanterns! So much fun, I love them. Noodle market actually sounds delicious to me, but if the food is not good - blah. The jellyfish is delightful - what a wonderful idea! I do like quirkiness.
ReplyDeleteCarola Bartz: I am a big fan of quirkiness. The noodle market didn't smell at all appetising. The portions were small, the prices expensive and there was no where to sit. Not a winner - even to my food loving self.
DeleteThe name of the gypsy I recall was Pooky Young Or pocky. His father was a non gypsy(A Georgio) His mother was a full blood Gypsy and his two children about my age who always wagged school were called didakais. The last time I visited Chalgrove In Oxfordshire the Vardo was gone.
ReplyDeleteGypsies originated from what was Southern India A few centuries ago.
Vest: I wonder how the family fared, and whether the diddakoi children found a place in the community. I am interested in the Romani people, and knew that they are believed to have come from India - despite the gypsy name suggesting they came from Egypt.
Delete
