Words for Wednesday

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Computer issues led her to bow out for a while.  The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...  We can use some or all of the prompts.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

Last month the Delores provided us with some excellent prompts and challenges.  This month the prompts will be posted here.

This weeks prompts are:

  1. game
  2. bag
  3. torch
  4. queen
  5. fit
  6. pardon
And/or
  1. beach
  2.  shadow
  3.  orb
  4. chilly
  5. collision
  6.  desperate
    Have fun.

    1. Orb - it doesn't roll off the tongue, does it? Wouldn't like to be desperate or chilly, so I guess I'd like to be queen or a shadow sounds nice.

      1. donna baker: Some days I already feel like a shadow. Being a queen sound like too much work to my lazy self.

      2. Ah yes to be a queen for the day!

    2. Clara was desperate to get off that chilly beach. Hours before she had seen that cloud shadows obscured that hot sunny orb and had set her on a collision course with freezing to death. Damn those surfers. She threw down her board and ran to the Tiki Hut Pub.

      1. Susan Kane: Lovely to see you join us again. Is it wrong of me to say that a chilly beach sounds quite good? And less crowded.

      2. We met a family on vacation at Carlsbad beach one December. They were having a marvelous time in the water and we asked if they were crazy. No, they were visiting from Russia.

      3. Susan Kane: And they were probably finding it remarkably warm.

      4. Fun, and the pub on a cold chilly day at the beach sounds perfect to me!

    3. She was desperate for peace. The constant collisions between their two kingdoms was wearing her down. No matter how many times she had offered some hint of a compromise or begged pardon from some imagined slight the response was a chilly rebuff. Was this the best it would get or was this merely a shadow of an ever changing game with no rules that was about to heat up. She felt like her opponent had a few aces up her sleeve and it was only a matter of time before she decided to play them. "Ding Dong" the doorbell rang and she looked deep into the queen's orbs. "Mom, Sally is here, I 'm going to run now. See you in the morning. Love you" and she walked down the hall as her sister came in the door. "You are in for a treat today. So far she has had 3 hissy fits about nothing and has complained about everything else. I hate to leave you like this but I am passing this torch to you. I'm outta here. She grabbed her bag, got in the car and headed to the beach.

      3. Some days it pays to start again! I can't wait for winter weather to leave so I too can head to the beach for real!

    5. Sophie going overseas? To live on a beach? It couldn't happen.
Game on. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
He let very few people into the secret. Anyone who saw fit to bag any detail of his plan was on a collision course to disaster and met a chilly reception. A very chilly reception with no pardons.
He had held a torch for Sophie for as long as he had known her. He took a deep breath, stood tall, put his shoulders back and flipped the office intercom to public broadcast.
'Sophie. When I heard you were thinking of going away it cast a shadow over my life. You don't need an orb and sceptre, you are the undisputed queen of my heart. Will you marry me?'

What do you think? Should she accept, or go to that beach? Based on your responses I will try and write her response - using the prompts.

      1. Tricky question. Has she also held a torch for him and could the beach be a honeymoon trip? Or is she getting away from a stalker?

      2. A choice of endings. I love it.I say the beach. Heh.

      3. Depends on whether he's the kind of man she can live with. And does he really love her or just want her because she is uncatchable. More details are needed to make a decision, my first inclination is no.

      4. Oh my this could go so many ways, but I am struck by his holding a torch for her all these years, and with any luck for him, maybe she too could have the same secret love for him, or in a wild twist (depending on your mood at writing) it could be an unrequited love! In any case, I look forward to the ending!

    6. Too many unknown variables. Did she have a secret thing for him also or is he just one of those gnats who buzz around uninvited.
      Excellent writing though!

    7. I am desperate to get to the beach! I'm hoping that when I get there I won't see a shadow, that the bright orb in the sky won't hide behind a bunch of clouds, a collision of fronts causing thunderstorms or worse, the day become so chilly I have to wear a parka instead of my bikini!

    9. And, they off!!

"Tamborine Mountain produced weather FIT for the QUEEN on Sunday just past.

The TORCH bearers, or should I say, the bearers of the Queen’s Baton , ahead of the start of the 2018 Commonwealth Games traversed Main Western Road through to Main Street, in North Tamborine. There the proud bearers were greeted in fine style by local dignitaries.

Crowds of locals and visitors to our area, DESPERATE to catch a glimpse of those carrying the baton lined the roadways, cheering and waving. The contagious excitement filling the mountain air was enough to PARDON a brief, light shower of rain that passed over at the start of the relay.

The Queen’s Baton originally left the forecourt of Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, 13th March, 2017. Its departure signalled the official countdown to the start of the 2018 Games. From there it set off on its long journey around this earthly ORB.

By the time it reaches its final destination today it will have travelled over 230,000 kms, over a period of 388 days.

Some routes covered during the Northern Hemisphere’s past winter would have been somewhat CHILLY, causing the runners to hasten their pace, no doubt. Thousands of eager fans, however, were GAME enough to face the wintry conditions, not allowing the weather cast a SHADOW on their excitement.

Today, Wednesday, 4th April, is Opening Ceremony Day.

This morning the first bearer of the Baton was Iron Man legend, Trevor Hendy.

In the 80s and 90s Trevor Hendy won the Australian Iron Man Championship six times, and came second on three other occasions. He also won the Uncle Toby’s Super Series four times. Being inducted into the Surf Lifesaving Halls of Fame is one among his many achievements, here and in Europe.

Trevor is currently President of the Surfers Paradise Surf Lifesaving Club, and he still mans BEACH patrols.

Hendy was transported to the beach across the waves, baton in hand, by an inflatable surf rescue boat. He and his boat crew were expertly escorted by 31 of the rescue boats, with no signs of a COLLISION occurring as they bounced through the surf at the Gold Coast.

The Opening Ceremony is tonight; tomorrow the competition begins in earnest.

Hopefully, the Gold Coast will have it in the BAG – hopefully The Games will be a mighty success and go off without a hitch."

    10. It was a chilly evening and she was anxious to make it back to her beach cottage before a predicted storm. All of a sudden a saucer like orb lit up the sky and blinded her to everything around her. Was it a - oh no - then came the collision. She had crashed into the giant orb which was smack dab in the middle of the road. As she regained her composure she wondered if it was filled with creatures from outer space? And then she saw a shadow, then many shadows drifting toward her car. to be continued

    21. I like prompt games, but truthfully, I don't need them. I suffer the opposite problem--too much to write already. I could probably write the rest of my life and not finish all the ideas I have sitting in my coffers. Now if I can just get my time-stopper working...

    22. Good afternoon. I'm joining in this week, and here it is.
      I used all 12 words.
Pardon me, but inside my bag a Wii Bowling game (which I nearly lost) in my near collision and desperate run across a chilly Minnesota beach chasing not my shadow, but an orb like torch fit for a queen hoping she'll join me in another game of Wii Bowling!

    23. Sophie has rejected Bryan's generous (albeit self-serving) offer.
Pardon? Did I just hear you correctly? Marry you? Orb and sceptre? Queen of your Heart? This game is based on self interest.
It will be a chilly day in hell before I take that desperate step. I would rather be a bag-lady living in the shadows of the city.
Actions speak louder than words sunshine.
Before you set a torch to it, I did find the document which shows that your need to succeed was in a collision with business ethics. Sadly ethics didn't survive the crash. I won't be party to it. You are a cheat. And dishonest. And both of those caps fit you better than the lovesick swain act you are currently wearing.
I don't think I can serve out my final notice. I feel too sick. The beach will be the perfect antidote.

    30. Hi EC - here's mine:

The shadow loomed, an eerie orb mistily appeared - suddenly the beach felt chilly - the desperation she'd felt on leaving home now seemed stupid ... that tanker was on collision course with the beach ... no time to react ... the darkness overwhelmed.

      Cheers Hilary
