I usually run with a theme. This week I am taking you back to Enlighten. Many of the buildings in the Parliamentary Triangle are illuminated, and have projections (which often relate to their function) shown on them. There is also usually some quirky fun to enjoy as you wander round. It is free, and the crowds (diminished due to you know what) are well behaved. As usual many photos follow.
We headed in just before sunset and enjoyed some time beside the lake.
I really liked the colour and the waterlilies and the frogs on this ordinarily subdued water feature.
The National Library. All of the photos are of the same wall - I was intrigued by the three dimensional effect the projections produced.
This avenue of trees is illuminated each year - and I always stop to take photos.
This very varied light display was fun.
The Portrait Gallery.
Old Parliament House - now officially called the Museum of Democracy (but known that way by virtually no-one).
Questacon - devoted to Science and Technology.
I enjoyed watching these coloured arches change colour too.
Finishing up at our National Library.
We spent a happy couple of hours wandering round. Other years have had more quirkiness, and perhaps better displays, but as free entertainment we applauded.
I hope your week is packed with colour and light.
And for those who celebrate it Happy Easter.
These are beautiful.
ReplyDelete-Quinley
Quinley: We look forward to it each and every year.
DeleteThey are beautiful colours, each one is perfect EC.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: There is always room for colour in my world.
DeleteHi EC - how delightful to see all your pics ... and what an interesting 'Enlighten 2022' which must have been inspiring to see - so pleased you were able to spend a reasonable amount of time looking around in the early evening. Gorgeous - cheers and enjoy your Easter-time ... Hilary
ReplyDeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: We first discovered Enlighten almost by accident. It has become a fixture on our calendars ever since. Some years are better than others, but there is always something to enjoy. I hope your Easter is lovely.
DeleteAwesome photos! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSusan Kane: I am glad that you enjoyed it.
DeleteHow much fun is that??! I'm in love with your city! Thank you for sharing such awesome things with the rest of us. I always enjoy your offerings. :) Please take care and hugs to you and Captain Chain Yanker.
ReplyDeleteRiver Fairchild: My city is considered boring by many. I think that they are WRONG. And the yanker of my chain and I thank you.
DeleteLove all the colors!
ReplyDeleteMike: So do I.
DeleteReally great! Thanks.
ReplyDeletee: Thank you. I hope you and Lukas are well.
DeleteThe many colored lights are very beautiful and I like the frogs too.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: I think the frogs were a highlight this year - though I also liked the quirky light display near them.
DeleteWow, a wonderful display as always. I marvelled at the 3D effect of that projection on the building - amazing!
ReplyDeleteAnd I loved the frogs and water lilies. I adore frogs! It's spring here now, and they're singing their little hearts out in our pond. Their 'concert' only lasts a few weeks, so I make sure to poke my head outdoors and listen a bit every day. :-)
Diane Henders: Even knowing the projection was on a flat wall I did a double take. And of course the frogs and the water lilies appealed to me - it is too long since I have seen or heard them. I envy you listening to their song.
DeleteI always enjoy your photos of this. I wish we had some similar displays here.
ReplyDeleteAnne in the kitchen: Thank you. This is a must see event for us, and I am glad to share it.
DeleteEvery year I am fascinated by your city's Enlighten event. It is marvelous and I can well understand that you love to go there and also take lots of pictures (thank you for that) - I would photograph something like that as well. I wish our city had events like that - I hate to drive into San Francisco if I want to experience some fun or quirky or enlightening event.
ReplyDeleteCarola Bartz: It is a challenge getting clear photos, particularly when the projections move. I am happy to make the attempt though. I am endlessly grateful for the quirkiness in my city.
DeleteCanberra certainly is alive with many wonderful, bright, colourful, interesting events...and we are fortunate you take ys along with you during your wanderings.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy the rest of this holiday weekend, EC...and that the coming week treats you well. Cuddles to Jazz. I hope he's doing okay...more than okay. Take care. :)
Lee: Thank you. Jazz is having a less than stellar day. Fingers crossed he picks up again. Hugs to you and your furry overlords.
DeleteCanberra is a very interesting city, Sue, with much to recommend it. Festivals like this can only make it better and instil a sense of attachment in its citizens.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: Thank you. Some of us are very attached to this city.
DeleteI'm ambivalent. On one hand it is fascinating, on the other hand I see the fine line between enlightenment and air pollution.
ReplyDeleteAhem: ... light pollution.
DeleteSean Jeating: I hear you. And have wondered a bit myself. Guiltily.
DeleteThank you for taking us along. You always have such wonderful places and events to visit. The projections on the library are incredible
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: Those library projections were spectacular and certainly fooled my eyes.
DeleteThe frogs on the lily pads are nice.
ReplyDeleteIt seems quite an effort has gone into the lighting.
Maybe old parliament house should be called instead of Museum of Democracy, Museum to Democracy (lost).
Andrew: You are getting increasingly right about diminishing democracy. Which worries me.
DeleteIt's all so beautifully colourful! Thank you. Apparently we had a mini version of Enlighten on our North Terrace, but I didn't know about it, it wasn't advertised anywhere, or I might have gone along with my camera.
ReplyDeleteRiver: What a shame you missed your city's take. Next year I hope it will be better advertised.
DeleteHow very different and colorful at night. The lighting is inspired.
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: It is clever isn't it?
DeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteMal Kiely (Lancelots Pram): Welcome and thank you.
DeleteMal Kiely (Lancelots Pram): I went to visit you, but could find nowhere to comment. I lived in Bathurst for a number of years and have some very fine memories from there. You also have MS?
DeleteWow! It must take a lot of planning and programming to get all these special projections on buildings to constantly change. Everything is amazing.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend and thanks to the good Easter wishes.
Hugs, Julia
Julia: A heap of planning - and skills I do not have. You have a wonderful weekend too.
DeleteAll very beautiful and interesting and those 3-dimensional pictures on flat walls are a bit mind-boggling.
ReplyDeletemessymimi: Thank you - I am glad that those library walls boggled someone else's mind.
DeleteYou caught these perfectly!
ReplyDeleteBill: Thank you. There are a lot of failed photos too.
DeleteVery special and interesting photos !
ReplyDeletehttps://gattinawritercramps.blogspot.com/2022/04/sunday-selections.html
Gattina: Thank you. I am heading over to see your Sunday Selections now.
DeleteSchöne Bilder von den Lichtern und der Wand mit den dreidimensionalen Bilder.
ReplyDeleteWünsche noch frohe Ostern.
Gruß
Noke
Noke: Thank you.
DeleteI was blown away by your National Library. Those 3-D projections were out of this world. I keep wondering how it was accomplished. I am amazed and so glad you shared them with us.
ReplyDeleteYour Old Parliament House or Museum of Democracy shared some real truths on the wall. I was incredibly impressed.
The frogs and waterlilies were great and the light show was definitely a MUST see, I'm sure. If we had something this great in my city, you couldn't keep me away. And on top of it, it was all free!! Wonderful, stunning photos, Sue.
Bluebeard and Elizabeth: Thank you. The Old Parliament House illuminates often do share some challenging truths. Perhaps democracy isn't dead yet. I really like that much of Enlighten is free, which makes it accessible to us all. There are some displays/events which charge entry, but very few.
DeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed looking at the lights. Such an uplifting display. Thank you so much for sharing.
Best wishes
Ellie
Ellie Foster: We all need uplifting at the moment don't we? Have a wonderful week.
DeleteI think you should be given some kind of official ambassador for Canberra award! You showcase some beautiful aspects of your city. Those arches would hold my attention too.
ReplyDeleteKim: Thank you. Next week I am going to show some good and some bad things about my city. A city which many despise.
DeleteLove the photos - especially the light show.
ReplyDelete:o)
Cheers
PM
Plastic Mancunian: I was amazed at just how much that light show varied, in colour and in shape.
DeleteBeautiful. Wish our town did something like that.
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: Thank you. Many cities here do something similar but my city is small enough that the crowds and the parking issues are not horrendous.
DeleteGreat Images Happy Easter and all the best
ReplyDeleteSteve: Thank you so much.
DeleteI loved seeing that 3-D wall especially, but they are all wonderful. Thanks for the plethora of pictures! :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: Thank you. Wasn't that wall amazing? My eyes were certainly fooled.
DeleteThe water lilies are gorgeous. Loved the pictures as always. Happy Easter. I hope the Easter bunny brought you some goodies.
ReplyDeleteMary Kirkland: Thank you. The Easter bunny was very generous.
DeleteOh, that 3D effect! It was so good I didn't understand it was an image until I went back for another look after puzzling over your description and the comments!
ReplyDeleteI think the part of this I like the best is all the lighting at night. Anything with lights at night seems magical to me, and the colours here make it especially so.
Thank you for sharing this experience with us once again.
jenny_o: I am sorry that I wasn't clear. That wall is flat, and seeing the 3D effect of the non-existent additions flummoxed me. My head KNEW it was a flat wall, but my eyes were firmly telling me different things. I do love colour. So much.
DeleteNo need to be sorry! The 3D was just that good, and clearly other people understood what you wrote! My eyes were completely fooled :)
Deletejenny_o: So were mine.
DeleteWhat an interesting and fun adventure. Thanks for taking me along. I truly enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteJ C: I am glad. Thank you for saying so.
DeleteI love the illuminated frog! Or illuminated toad? I am not sure how to tell the difference, especially when they are so luminescent.
ReplyDeleteJohn Wiswell: Probably a frog - just because of the link to water. No warts that I could see either.
DeleteHappy Easter to you too and thank you for all the fabulous photos of Enlighten. Very impressive, for me but I had to laugh when I saw this, 'Other years have had more quirkiness, and perhaps better displays...'
ReplyDeleteKalpana: It is true. I think the display HAS been better in other years, but we enjoyed ourselves anyway.
DeleteThat looks like such a fun event! it's nice that it's free and you area able to walk around and enjoy the lights whenever you please :)
ReplyDeleteHope you had a nice weekend and a good Easter :)
Away From The Blue
Mica: The buildings are illuminated when the sun goes down - but there are noodle markets and other food available before that. It is a clever celebration. I hope your Easter was lovely too.
DeleteWhat wonderful displays?! It elevates my mood so much. Thank you for sharing this. Hope you had a wonderful Easter:)
ReplyDeleteDamyanti Biswas: Light and colour ARE mood lifters aren't they?
DeleteAbsolutely!
Deletewowow what a display xx
ReplyDeleteaussie aNNie: It was good - but some other years have been better. We will be back next year. Of course.
DeleteWhat fun pictures. I can see why people like to mill around. I think my favorite might be the white circles. Thanks for sharing, made me smile. We have lights here at the zoo during the Christmas holidays, but am not aware of other fun lighting throughout...should check into that.
ReplyDeleteSandy: Lots of cities here do a version of Enlighten and it has become a tradition to illuminate buildings for 'special days'. Quite a lot of our buildings are wearing blue and yellow for Ukraine at the moment.
DeleteSounds like you had a wonderful time! I love this type of light festival, too.
ReplyDeletegigi-hawaii: We did have fun - and also enjoy light festivals.
DeleteThat looks like such a wonderful event.
ReplyDeleteHena Tayeb: It is. A festival of fun.
DeleteThis looks magical to me. The colour changing arces somehow reminded me of my childhood - in a good way. Thanks for the lovely photos and your Easter wishes. I hope you have still a good time!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte (MotherOwl): I agree. The colour changing arches were magical. And fun - something we need a lot more of. All of us.
DeleteQuirky, beautiful...and as Charlotte (Mother Owl) says, magical. Big smiles on my face, and inside of me now.
ReplyDeleteneena maiya (guyan gyal): I am so glad to hear that.
DeleteThe light displays and water features are so beautiful! ♥
ReplyDeleteRain: I like that water feature anyway - but it takes on a whole new dimension during Enlighten.
DeleteLovely photographs you've shared. So pleased you enjoyed your visit.
ReplyDeleteWe had a very nice Easter spending time with family, always fun and enjoyable.
Have a good week ahead.
All the best Jan
How beautiful, love the frog. Looks so enjoyable. Have a great week my friend.
ReplyDeleteMason Canyon: It IS enjoyable. You have a wonderful week too.
DeleteI've never been to Sydney's "Vivid" because I just dont want to deal with crowds.
ReplyDeleteEnlighten looks to be the crowd-free alternative
kylie: I don't do crowds well. Enlighten often stretches that, but this year the numbers were down. And they never approach the numbers that your city attracts. Fortunately.
DeleteAll very interesting and colourful. Loved the frogs the best, so cute! and seriously admire the 3-D optical illusions on the library - the last two are mind boggling!
ReplyDeleteNilanjana Bose: Thank you so much for coming by at a very, very busy time in your life. And yes, mind boggling sums up those projections on the library for me.
DeleteThis is wonderful! Must have been great walking around at night.
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: It was. I am uncertain on my feet in low light or over uneven ground and it was still great.
DeleteYes thank you we do celebrate Easter and oh my you have gifted us with such a celebration of light! How amazing is that. That show should spark so much happiness and joy walking and living it because I'm feeling it all the way over here in my own living room miles and miles away! Incredible. Thanks for bringing this beauty of light to us too.
ReplyDelete21 Wits: Celebration of light is a perfect description - and I am very glad to be able to share the joy.
DeleteBreathtaking. So many wonders. Loved those frogs, and the changing lights and the water lilies. And, and, and....:)
ReplyDeleteSandra Cox: I am very glad to hear that. Thank you.
DeleteGorgeous photos!! That would be an amazing stroll!
ReplyDeleteJemi Fraser: It was.
DeleteMe encantan estas fotografías. Se ven fantásticas.
ReplyDeleteVENTANA DE FOTO: Thank you so much.
DeleteWhat a beautiful and colorful photos! Frog on the lily looks great. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful day. Greetings.
ReplyDeletebread&salt: The frog and the lilies were great weren't they? Have a lovely day yourself.
DeleteI like the 3 dimensional effect too.
ReplyDeleteHope today isn't a knackered day.
Hugs
Sandra Cox: Lifeline today - definitely knackered.
DeleteMuseum of Democracy? Really? Is democracy now just a relic in a dusty display cabinet in the Hall of Lost Dreams?
ReplyDeleteJ Cosmo Newbery: Sadly yes. Though many of the exhibits don't favour the current government. There is a wonderful collection of biting political cartoons displayed there.
Manuel: Thank you. It is indeed a short-lived festival - but worth seeing. Masks are only mandatory in some places here, though many people continue to wear them. I don't think we are out of the woods yet though. Stay well and stay safe.
DeleteReally beautiful light show, I like.
ReplyDeleteHope you are well.
orvokki: Thank you. We like it too, and visit each year. I am fine - and hope that you are well too.
DeleteLove the illumed trees. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSandra Cox: I like them too - and there is colour change there as well.
DeleteThe illuminations and colours are excellent. It is like the displays catered for everyone, the pastels, the bright ones, the psychedelic colours and of course the frog lovers!
ReplyDeletekestrel: Perhaps not something for everyone - but certainly something for a lot of people.
Deletethe only kind of frog I like is one that isn't real. ;) I like the lights a lot. I am having trouble with them though, they give me a migraine. Sort of a new thing. Took my granddaughter to Chuck E Cheese last weekend and the floor had a light up dance pad. The lights took me out of the equation. I had a major headache with even that... Oh well, I still like them, I just have to be careful. Thanks for the journey. I enjoyed your pics.
ReplyDeletemail4rosey: I am sorry about your problems with lights. I suspect Enlighten would not have been kind to you. Particularly the displays where the lights changed colour and moved.
DeleteI do like frogs but hope you enjoyed our illuminated one - which was quiet and didn't jump.
