Sunday Selections #812

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Sorry I still haven't succeeded in working out how to do a blog hop. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme. This week my theme is our Enlighten festival which ran in my absence.  Before the usual myriad of photos some words.

It has been a difficult break.  In addition to the state of the world my body continues to behave badly.  Not helped because in the first week of February a storm took out our cooler which I rely on.  It also fried our modem so I had no access to the internet.  That is back but we still don't have a cooler.  Fingers tightly crossed it will be finally repaired on Monday.

The balloon spectacular has also been on.  I have made numerous attempts to see it but have failed.  Today is the last day for it so I will try again, and despite being back in the blogosphere will be slow to respond to posts today.  Wish me luck.  There are two feature balloons this year, a lion and a tiger.  I do hope they can fly today.  If they take to the air they are inflated just after dawn so I will be heading off early today (again).

Back to Enlighten.  Buildings in the National Triangle were illuminated and despite it being a hot and horrid night we went for a look see.  Settle back with the beverage of choice.

I don't know what these signified - but they looked even better after dark.

At the National Library a fairy tale from Ancient China was told and illustrated - and we finally got to enjoy Lindy Lee's sculpture Ouroboros at night - and enjoy it we did.

I do love the illuminated trees.

February/March are festival months in my city and there is lots of free entertainment.  Which is lovely.

I have missed you and hope you are all doing well.

  7. I hope your cooler is indeed fixed when promised - it must be very difficult not to have it during the hot weather. Fingers crossed for Monday.

Thank you for giving us a look at the Enlighten festival - so much to enjoy. Is that a dragonfly in the very first picture of the multi-coloured structures? I would love to have a festival like this near me, with the lighted trees and that tunnel. A lovely outing!

Please take care of yourself. Sending my best to you.

Enlighten is delightful. It may have been a dragon fly - but I know not. Hugs.

  9. I am distressed to hear that you have been having such a rough time, with damaging storms on top of it all not helping. Welcome back. I hope that your condition will improve to the point where you can keep regular company with us again. We all miss your good humour, compassion and wisdom. Goodness know the world is sorely indeed of more of those qualities these days. Elbows up!

  13. It's wonderful to have you back, EC. You've been in my thoughts, and I was hoping you were doing okay...better than okay.

Things have been hectic up hereabouts of late. Cyclone Alfred made his uninvited, unwelcome visit to this part of our State. I lost power for seven days; some lost power for longer. We, here on the hill, are reliant on our rainwater tanks that are operated by pumps, so no power, no phone, etc., no water for bathing, drinking and flushing of toilets! We are also solely dependent on septic, not sewerage. I lost all food in my fridge and freezer. Our local supermarket, IGA, found it tough going. They were closed for a week because, unfortunately, their generator wouldn't work...wouldn't co-operate, so they had to discard so much food. All during a time when everyone was discarding their home food stocks! I felt for the supermarket...it was a huge loss, and so much work for them getting every back into "gear". Trees throughout the mountain were blown down. Crews are still working in cleaning up all the debris, and fixing the roads. Fortunately, my humble little abode suffered no structural damage. Lots of debris kept crashing on to the roof throughout the bedlam, and that caused much anxiety

Anyway, I'll end my lengthy tale. Again, it's great to see you. My best wishes to you, and my cuddles to Batty and Odie. :)

    1. Lee: I am sorry that Alfred made your life difficult and shudder to think of the wasted food (yours and others). I am v glad you have power (and water)again. Batty and Odie are doing well though they will be unimpressed if the tradesmen finally make their appearance (as promised) tomorrow.

  21. Hi Sue - So good to hear from you despite the challenges you're still having. I do hope the cooler gets fixed tomorrow (probably today now (almost!)). Excellent you're still able to get out to see your Enlighten it is amazing ... so much to see - the Ouroboros ... but I enjoyed the first couple of photos - they look like the decorated candles we used to get in Swaziland - I'm sure other places made similar. Then once darkness came I can imagine - they shone forth. Take care - and I hope that insurance company comes to its senses ... with thoughts - Hilary xo

  23. So lovely to see you have been out with your camera among the various festivities, and that you are back to blogging. A question: your cooler was fried in the storm...... is a cooler a fridge, a freezer for frozen food, or an air conditioner for cooling the house? Here in Canada a cooler is usually an insulated food carrier for taking on picnics or camping.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Shammickite: We use the Canadian definition too but in this instance the cooler was the evaporative cooling for the house. How I have missed it.

  24. Glad to see you back. I love the photos with all the lights. Been crazy on my end. Suddenly my cat Freddie dropped dead he was not even 3. His sister Tish went into depression as cats have it and she anguishes and cries and I think she will pine away. Needless to say my anxiety level is like a yo-yo now but I keep working and rallying on. I hope you have a great new week ahead,
