Words for Wednesday 16/7/2025

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Computer issues led her to bow out for a while. The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we do with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore... We can use some or all of the prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog. I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud. And huge thanks to those of you who come back, sometimes time after time to cheer other contributors on.

Huge thanks to Hilary Melton-Butcher for providing the prompts last month. The prompts will be here again this month and are provided by Charlotte (MotherOwl).

An additional prompt from Charlotte (MotherOwl) is her colour of the month to use (or not) in your take on the prompts. The colour for July is"Writing Pleasure Purple"

This week's prompts are:

  • Party
  • Chance
  • Note
  • Faucet
  • Black
  • Idea

And/or

  • Jelly
  • Leather
  • Books
  • Root
  • Amusement
  • Pardon

Have fun.

I will schedule the posts for the rest of the month and they will still appear.  Goodness (or Blogger) only knows what has happened to the format.

  3. Thanks for the heads-up on the Words for Wednesday meme. It looks like a great way to encourage writing with those prompts. I see the July color is "Writing Pleasure Purple," and this week's prompts offer a lot of variety, from "Party" to "Pardon."

It's cool that it's become a movable feast and that people are supporting each other.

    1. From Google Translate:

In the darkness of the night, a PARTY was taking place in an old mansion. The lights illuminated the room as the music resonated. The BLACK notes of the piano added a touch of mystery. Amidst the laughter and FUN, a mysterious NOTE appeared on the PURPLE JELLY table. "A unique OPPORTUNITY", it said.
Curiosity was aroused and an IDEA was formed. People headed to the library, where the LEATHER BOOKS hid ancient secrets. The sound of a TAP dripping broke the silence and suddenly, the ROOT of the enigma was revealed, the real mystery was not who, but what... The organizer, an old forgotten friend, was the one who had prepared everything to ask FORGIVENESS and reconcile with everyone.

      Thank you very much!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the party, “pardon,” he said as he slipped her a note. What were the chances he’d be there? She thought he lived in Quebec now, on his third wife.
Her heart had blackened after he had dumped her and she had no idea she’d run into him at a party in St. John’s. Thirty years later.
It was noisy, the guests milling about, jolly in the peacock cloths of summer. The leather bound books gleamed in the host’s, a semi-famous author, library.
She was rooted to the spot on the balcony outside as she tried to dismiss the look of faint amusement that he still wore as he leaned over and then vanished.
She made her way to the bathroom and locked the door.
She sat on the toilet and opened the note.
“Here in town for two days only. 665-8728. Grab me while I’m hot.”
She let a small tear glide down her face as she tore the note into smithereens and flushed it down the toilet.

    Good luck everyone!

  10. The NOTE I had to write was written on BACK paper and luckily I had the right pencil that the text would be seen. The FAUCET (tap) in the bathroom held the key to how the pencil would work on black, the IDEA was a good one and I came across it by CHANCE. I told my friend that when she is well again we will give her a PARTY.
    Good luck EC.

  12. It seems to me it’s time to throw a PARTY. Are you, by CHANCE, in agreement with that? This is not for our own AMUSEMENT, it’s to celebrate Sue’s successful surgery and her return to the world of blogging. We’ll all look forward to the additions to her list of BOOKS. There are always titles of NOTE, seldom LEATHER-bound tomes, but significant titles, sometimes of new authors, surely the ROOT of great pleasure for the bibliophiles among us. Many great IDEAS have come from this gushing FAUCET of wisdom. You may be PARDONED for thinking that the news is always BLACK, but at least for today have none of that. I’m off to make JELLY.

    5. Hi David - that's v clever and thoughtful ... I congratulate you - I rarely look at the books others are reading - way too many of my own to settle down to. But I'd have a party when that happens ... it is good to see Sue back with us - cheers and all the very best to one and all - Hilary

  13. Hi Sue - I hope things are easier ... I don't want to hear more - but hope it's better news. Here's mine:

This month the group Writing for Pleasure had the topic Black instead of Purple – well that made a change.

It was a party after all … she'd make a jelly in the shape of a book … a black jelly perhaps … which would shimmer purple in the fading light.

They all loved creating stories … many amused, as we listened … ghost stories, giggly ones … the chortling tap (faucet) was opened … and the group at times became hysterical.

The chair demanded a pardon – he was not amused – he'd come dressed in black leathers to match his black note-book … would he get it … but he'd sown the root for an apologetic smile – which then became apoplectic … after that they'd all fall about laughing – at what … by then they'd have forgotten.

The stories the group crafted were stored in the black binder – at some stage … they could be used for a new Writing For Pleasure book – fat chance of that happening … how many files of them were there now … a dozen or more … oh well – let's party and forget tomorrow …

Cheers to one and all - Hilary
