Out of the Shadows

After my last necessarily sombre post I felt the need for some lightness, brightness, colour and laughter.

While I was attempting to make the bed this morning Jazz and Jewel were helping as only cats can.  (clicking on any of the photos will make them larger)

The garden continues to give me joy.  I know I said I wouldn't put any more photos of daffodils up, but I lied.

I love the carpet of fallen camellia petals.  Some fell naturally and some were helped on their way by king parrots like the one so skillfully concealed in the next photo.

And a little more Jazz, looking very silly, on top of the fridge.  Regrettably this is probably one of his favourite places in the house.  From there he scurries behind the kitchen cupboards.  It is disconcerting to say the least to walk past a purring cupboard.

  1. Ah! The magic and mischief of black cats...
Our secretary got quite nostalgic at those pictures of spring flowers. She says to thank you.

  2. A lovely series of shots! Your cats are so cute! With autumn approaching here, I am thoroughly enjoying your flower photos, especially the daffies!

  3. geiger and sporran: Welcome. Magic and mischief indeed. I am pleased that your secretary liked the spring flowers. Jazz n Jewel do too - Jazz chews them, and Jewel batts them around.

Karen: Thanks - tulips, crab apple, peach and iris to come.

  6. Windsmoke: Jazz n Jewel are ALWAYS mucking around.

Strayer: Its a pretty impressive camoflage job isn't it?

  7. What is that pretty shrub with the pink flowers and darker pink buds? It's just under that picture of different yellow daffodils.

  8. Oh, to see forsythia! The lovely colors of the spring flowers reminded me that YOU are beginning the spring and summer months as we descend into winter... Love that picture of Jazz cleaning himself. He's a beautiful cat.

  9. River: That is a small portion of the crab apple tree. It is only nearly out, so I took a photo of some of the bits that are.

DJan: Forsythia is a wonder. Its vibrancy sends away winter.

  12. Funny pic of Jazz in particular (the fridge one)

  13. librarygirl: Jazz is frequently ridiculous. It is a large part of his charm.

  16. 'a purring cupboard' - they are gorgeous. I am cat-sitting a Burmese right now and he is really something.
I notice you have the lovely daffodil type called EggnBacon. I am going to the RASV Show next week and will head straight to the Hancock daffodil stand (on my way to the Clydesdales).
Thanks from me and AnnODyne for sharing your SPRINGy images.

  17. ladyfi: The male King Parrot is indeed a thing of beauty. The female is more subtle, but still gorgeous.

indonesatooverseas: Welcome and thanks, I'll head over to visit you shortly.

Marshal Stacks: Burmese cats have a lot of charm. And many of our daffodils are courtesy of Hancocks - who send us catalogues of garden porn. Which we succumb to. I envy you the trip to the RASV - and have a big weakness for Clydesdales too.

  18. Your photos and your sense of catching so many colours in nature is just beautiful....X

  19. Denyse: Thank you - but at this time of year all the colours are there for the catching.

  20. What would we ever do without our cats to help us? I especially like the diabolical looking one of Jazz on the fridge. We used to have a psychologically disturbed Siamese whose favorite place was on the refrigerator and on top of the cabinets. I'd be in the kitchen and suddenly get the feeling I was being watched. And there she'd be, high above, with those twitching blue eyes.

And please do keep posting flower pics. And cat pics!

  21. LOL I love the mental image "a purring cupboard".
Love the flowers, and that carpet of camellia petals is luxurious :)

  22. Paper Chipmunk: Diabolical is right. It is the purrfect position for him to swat at me, purring the whole time. And to roll on the top, dislodging things (still purring). The tulips are coming out now - so there will be more photos.

Jayne: The purring cupboard is quite odd. He is actually balanced on a ledge behind them, but his purr is so loud it does seem that the cupboard is purring. And yes, the camellia carpet is magical. And, as you say, luxurious.

  23. Miss 5 was looking over my shoulder as I switched to your page (which has been open all day!) and she was very much taken with the adventures of Jewel and Jazz :) She is very much a cat girl and is most upset that they just don't seem to get noisy 5 year old girls, LOL

    Love the camellia carpet :)

  24. EC, I'm catching up on blogs today and am still thinking about your honest and wonderful post on RU OK day. Then, to see these bright and joyous pictures it made me realise that, apart from a good therapist, family, Anti-Ds and all, some of the best therapy is from actively seeing and appreciating the lovely stuff around us.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Amanda: Thanks. Miss 5 would have to love J n J from a distance. They are both cowardly cats. And yes, the camellia carpet is special. I loved it, but had doubts about putting it up.

Kath: Thank you. I find the little things a big help (small things for small minds?). The cat love or in your case dog love, the garden, the colours in the sky ...

Your garden must be so peacefull.

  30. EC - I love these photos, especially as a counterpoint to your last post. Sometimes pictures speak louder than words - and these images are living proof that there is indeed something to live for, even in the small things, perhaps especially in the small things. I often wonder if people back themselves into corners of despair partly because they put too much pressure on themselves and their lives to be hugely successful and noteworthy according to ridiculously high standards that no one really ever meets, or if they seem to, it's not quite what it seems. Kitty mischief and the beauty of petal and wing - what more could one want? Thanks for this post.

  31. I always love to see photos from Australia, especially when there are pretty kitties involved showing them having fun, king parrots and beautiful flowers :) AND DAFFODILS!!! :) I love to see them, especially as they are quite a ways off here, they would brighten anyone's day.

  32. Two Tigers: Thank you. Loving my photos means a lot coming from you. I think you are right about the ridiculous expectations we place upon ourselves. Dangerous. And yes, I find lots of joy in the small things.

Denise: Thanks. Lots of fun for all concerned.

  33. This is my first time here. I came by way of DJan's blog. I see that you are from Canberra. I know a couple that live there. Perhaps you know them too. Hans and Dorothy Karman? They visited me once while touring the US. Dorothy and I had been in an online quilting group and they stayed with us a few days before heading on into Canada from California. Nice to meet you. Ah...Spring!! We are heading into Fall here and I am thrilled.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Teri: Hello, and welcome. No, sorry I don't know the Karmans. Are you thrilled at the onset of Autumn or at our Spring?

  35. Wow, your fans have delurked, and rightly so! Firstly, your cats crack me up. They may look like my cats but they are sooooo much naughtier!
Secondly, that was an amazing RUOK post. But you know that. Still, you just need to be told it again anyway. :)
Enjoy that garden; I'm finding all sort of things in my first year in mine. I said to Jem the other day that if the weird spiky thing in the front didn't do something spectacular soon, it would be ripped out. So it grew buds that day! Heh.

  36. I've failed almost every time I've said, "This is my last time doing [x]!" And by "almost every," I mean "every." As a result, I'm trying to take it as it comes. :p

I love that king parrot picture. A couple of my coworkers and me were surprised to learn we've got a wild parrot population around work. How have I not managed to see them after three years there?!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ampersand Duck: Thankyou. The RUOK post was difficult to write without becoming a preacher.
Would you believe these are not the naughtiest cats to have sharing our life? Sometime Medlyn and Moby deserve a post. And yes, gardens are like that. You think something is dull and boring, and threaten it and it immediately turns into something amazing.

Deb: It is amazing how close to the city they are happy to be. And a never ending time waster in this house. Look at the ..., oh and the ...

  38. So cute, Jazz....and once again I wish it was Spring all year?? but we need our seasons, I guess...I do not get tired of seeing blooms

  39. Kim @ Stuff: Jazz can be very cute. He needs to be. More coming up and out in the garden every day - an exciting time.
