As usual I am running with a theme this week. It has been wet here. Very wet. By mid morning on the 1st of March we had reached our usual monthly average rainfall. It has been raining almost constantly since.
I like the rain. It is good for the garden, provides me with a perfect excuse not to be weeding and keeps the temperatures down. All good things. Just the same, it has been a touch grey and gloomy outside.
So today I am bringing you the begonias which live on our front veranda and add colour to every day.
Wow - that's a lot of begonias! Can't grow them that well here, but I remember seeing amazing ones in Victoria...
ReplyDeleteWe get obsessed. If we plant one thing and it thrives we buy another ten. The begonias have been in their spot on the veranda for some years now.
DeleteI love the colour of that first one. Your garden is very floral!
ReplyDeletetoushka lee: That first one just about glows in the dark - we love it too.
DeleteBeautiful begonias! We've got your "grey" but not your warm temps or beautiful flowers. I'm looking forward to the change in seasons!
ReplyDeleteRon Dudley: I am also looking forward to the change in seasons. I much prefer Autumn and Winter which are much kinder to me than the hot weather.
DeleteHow wonderful to step out into all that colour every day.
ReplyDeletemybabyjohn/Delores: It is nice to have the splash of colour by the front door. Welcoming and cheery.
DeleteGorgeous flowers! I'm a touch envious, there is a severe lack of flowers here. I'm working on it though!
ReplyDeleteVeronica Foale: Our garden is a work in progress. Often slow progress. Good luck with yours.
DeleteI love the one with the red contrasting with the green spotted leaves. What wonderful pictures! Thanks for sharing your pretty flowers with me. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: Lots of begonias have lovely contrasting leaves. A joy.
DeleteGorgeous! What are the names of #3 and #6 photos. My mom had ones like these. One was in a five gallon lard can, and it grew to the ceiling (10 ft.). The blooms were so fragrant, hung down like grapes. She said it was "Angel wing" to the best of her knowledge.
ReplyDeleteGreat memories.
Susan Kane: To the best of my knowledge your mother was right and they are 'Angel Wings'. We bought them from markets rather than nurseries so they came to us unnamed. A ten foot begonia would be an amazing sight - frost cuts ours back well before that.
DeleteSuch a lovely selection! I have never grown begonias because I don't have a sheltered verandah-y place where they would be happy. These are just stunning; I love the vibrant colours, but the delicate pink-and-white are my favourites. Thanks for brightening my day.
ReplyDeleteAlexia: I think the pink and white ones are called Strawberries and cream.
DeleteBonza photos. I especially like the white Begonias with just a delicate sprinkle of pink on the petals in the 2nd & 5th photos :-).
ReplyDeleteThanks Windsmoke.
DeleteSo colourful! I love begonias, but don't seem to be able to grow them. My mum took a cutting from the last dying one I had and it grew in her back porch for years and years! My front porch is exposed to all weathers especially hot, hot sun, so I need to find suitable pot plants to go with the jades.
ReplyDeleteRiver: Our begonias are not in direct sunlight for very much of the day. They hide behind the Camellias. Perhaps some succulents would like to be on your front porch with the Jade.
DeleteThese are so pretty EC! I'm afraid I have a brown thumb, I grow weeds...but hey, they are great weeds. Hope the weather cools off for you!
ReplyDeleteKaren: We grow some pretty impressive weeds here too. My father always said 'if it grows well it is a weed' and I think he was right.
DeleteIt is cooler today, but way too humid. Never satisfied.
So lovely. Are you having to water every day because of the heat there? Just wondering - these blooms look very healthy.
ReplyDeleteLynn: We have had a much wetter summer than usual so they have required very little additional watering. I have a worm farm and they do get worm water quite often.
DeleteThey're beautiful! I have been growing an angel wing for 10 years. It grows and grows but has never flowered. :(
ReplyDeleteAustan: How mean of your Angel Wing not to flower. And how frustrating.
DeleteThey are beautiful. I wish I had a green thumb like you do!
ReplyDeletejenny_o: Thank you. There are quite a number of plants that I kill. Maiden hair fern simply will not grow for me. Or gardenais. or daphne for more than a season.
DeleteAren't begonias wonderful! Maybe I will try some more this year. There are so many varities! I love your pictures.
ReplyDeleteTeresa: Thank you. And yes, you are right there are so many varieties (and I love them all).
DeleteThose colours and flowers are utterly gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLadyFi: Thank you. They are vibrant aren't they?
DeleteI like rain, shine, and this post!

Cloudia: Thank you, lots.
DeleteSuperb, a delight for the eyes.
ReplyDeleteDave King: Thank you.
DeleteI'm seeing an orange theme to many of our photographs this morning! Thank you for the beautiful flowers!
ReplyDeleteCindi: Thank you, the colours are cheerful aren't they?
DeleteBeautiful, wish I could grow flowers that pretty in my garden! Looking forward to doing my own Sunday Selection now... Lovely blog :-) x
ReplyDeletexxx Hannah xxx: Welcome and thank you. I do get obsessional in the garden.
DeleteOh you have a veranda. I'm so jealous. And it must be a feast of colour too. Very pretty begonias.
ReplyDeleteCarolina: It is only a small veranda, and not fancy. The begonias brighten it up though.
DeleteA lovely splash of colour, really appreciated because Spring here seems to have reverted back to Winter, with snow on the hills this morning.
ReplyDeleteRelatively Retiring: Thank you. We are getting Summer back again today. The weather seems to be a tad odd worldwide. I am really, really looking forward to the cooler months.
DeleteWow, those ARE gorgeous begonias!
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law loved begonias and always had them planted in her garden. I never have any luck with them.
Jay at the Depp Effect: Out begonias thrive on neglect and water from the worm farm. It seems to be a matter of finding the right spot and leaving them alone.
DeleteThese are so beautiful that I could not pick a fav
ReplyDeleteKim @ Stuff: Thank you.
DeleteAnything that keeps you from having to drag around a garden hose in the heat has to not be all bad. Your flowers, as usual, are gorgeous! Always a delight to see snippets of your garden.
ReplyDeletePaper Chipmunk: I can't see that anything is going to need watering for a while. And you are so right about the relief from dragging a hose and/or watering cans.
DeleteI think my next post might be of the weeds that are thriving.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Stunning photos!! begonias are my Dad's favorite... he takes them out of the soil in winter and puts them in the cellar!
DeleteHi Nicky: I remember that you said that your Dad liked begonias. I just leave them in the pot year after year.
DeleteSo beautiful! I've never seen orange ones like that.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Colours.
ReplyDeleteI smell them over here.
Xx
Lynn: They are spectacular - make me smile every year.
ReplyDeleteMy Inner Chick: Thank you.
