Sunday Selections #443

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme.  This week I am starting with the issue which has been our focus for most of the week.  Jazz had a spectacular vomiting episode.  After it (most unusually for a food oriented cat) he stopped eating.  And drinking.  So we went to the vet.  She gave him an anti-nausea shot and we brought him home.  He ate a little - then stopped again.  Naturally after the vet closed for the weekend.

So we went back on Monday.  He didn't have a temperature, but flatly refused food or water, and was obviously miserable.  Some of the possible reasons were incredibly nasty.  Many, many tests followed.  All inconclusive.  He was dehydrated and spent the night on a drip.  He was given an appetite stimulant and started to eat again - so we were able to bring the punk pussy home.

This was taken before his vet odyssey.

And these after.  He is now eating, purring and much more his usual self, but the follow-up visit to the vet yesterday indicates he probably has feline pancreatitus.  A further visit next week.  Poor Jazz.

Now to (mostly) less stressful images.  Spring is nearly here.

I am pleased to see the crocus in bloom.

I really liked this anemone.  I was lucky to photograph it because less than half an hour later the vandal birds had beheaded (and shredded) it.  As they have done to dozens of other anemones, daffodils, the iris in the photo above, jonquils, violets, geraniums, lavender, ixia, the camellia bushes...

The bees and less destructive birds are enjoying the grevillea.

And the wattle (the emblem of our land) is starting to come out, and blazing in the sun.

Finishing with some of our less destructive avian visitors.

 Eastern Rosella.

Male King Parrot.

We can now hand feed at least one of the crimson rosellas.

 A female King Parrot.

And a corella for Susan Kane, who often asks for them.

I hope your week(s) are blooming lovely.

  4. I am glad to hear that your cat is doing well. I am quite in love with Australian parrots so those pictures are a treat. I have not yet had the pleasure of hand feeding one but I am determined to try again next year. I almost succeeded last October with a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, but it wouldn't take that final leap of faith.

  5. I sure do hope Jazz will be all right. It's so tough to have our nonverbal family tell us indirectly that things are not okay. Those shaved bits will grow back, and Jazz will be himself again. And I also LOVE those parrot pictures. What lovely creatures. :-)

  7. Looking at all those beautiful and exotic birds is such a treat! Thank you!

The flowers emanate warmth and happiness unaware that they run the risk of being decapitated and/or shredded in seconds.

Last but definitely not least... Jazz... poor thing... I'm glad he is his normal self.

I'm not a pet owner so my second thought is about the veterinary bills ... :)

  11. Beautiful birds and I love the wattle.

I'm glad Jazz is on the mend.

I'm now a black cat owner with her 5 striped children. I live in the country so I can have more pets than most. I have a room to the side of the house that is separated from the main house that is their headquarters. We have quite the predators. I get them all in at night. A hawk was carrying on yesterday, Obvious frustration from seeing such tasty meals that he or she could not get. Cats are also coyote magnets. You do have to keep them in the house if you want to keep them for some time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ann Bennett: Jazz is not out of the woods yet. No coyotes here, but he is largely an inside cat.
And yes, we love the birds too. And what the cockatoos leave us of the garden.

  16. Poor Jazz (and poor you) - you would certainly have been hoping for a full recovery, so "managing" the condition sounds a bit worrying. I did wonder if he had eaten something poisonous...

Your birds and your flowers are just glorious. I do love crocuses. And although some varieties of wattle are regarded as pest plants here, I do love yellow flowers - so sunny and cheerful.

    2. Oh no, I'm sorry, EC. My Hopi, my first cat, died of lymphoma, found in four organs, including the pancreas. She had it for years, as her symptoms, undiagnosed, went on for years. I took her to the vet to have so many tests over those years and in the end, the only way they discovered what was really wrong was exploratory surgery. Kittens sometimes get a syndrome where the tube dumping pancreatic digestive juices into the intestine is either blocked, twisted or malformed. Then their pancreas starts digesting itself. I had one go that way. Good luck. I'd like to hear, but pancreatic involvement is never a good thing. I suppose you know that.

    3. Strayer: There is some question about other organs being involved. Fingers and toes crossed.

  60. Aww, poor Jazz. Our doggie went through this a couple of months ago. We actually had to increase our credit card limit because of how often we had to take him in. They had no idea what was going on. Finally, they settled on UTI. Gave him antibiotics and he's been great ever since. Sending lots of healing vibes Jazz's way.

  61. Dear EC, so sorry to learn that Jazz has been so ill and has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. Is that treatable on a long-term basis? His fur is so thick. Maybe all cats have thick fur and I'm seeing it now that Jazz had been shaved.

thanks for the gorgeous photographs of both flowers and birds. So much vivid color. Peace.

    1. Dee: We were amazed at how thick Jazz's coat is too - but since we are (just) still in winter it is not surprising. Whether the pancreatitis is manageable on a long term basis seems to depend on what type he has. Hopefully we will learn more today.

    2. Dear EC, what did you learn about the type Jazz has???? Peace.

    3. Dee: Nothing. We are still watching and waiting. And hoping.

  64. Oh, poor Jazz. It's awful when one of our babies is sick and can't tell us what hurts. I'm glad he's eating again, and hope he's over the pancreatitis soon.

Your pics are beautiful, as always. Seeing your flowers in bloom gives me hope that our long hot summer will soon be coming to an end. I am sooooo ready for cooler weather. And those birds! Absolutely gorgeous! I'd never grow tired of looking at them... but I dunno how happy I'd be about them destroying my flowers... I guess we've gotta take the bad with the good.

Have a wonderful weekend, dear lady.

I am NOT happy at the cockatoos vandalism. And am employing my pump action water pistol.

  65. Poor Jazz!!! So good to hear he is over the worst of it. This is something I have never heard about so thank you for the link. I wish him a continued return to good health.

Your series of flowers and birds are all gorgeous! What does Jazz think of all those birds? :)

    1. DeniseinVA: We had yet another visit to the vet yesterday, and our fingers are crossed.
Jazz is an elderly boy now and usually doesn't bother with the birds. Which pleases us.

  66. We had a cat, Mildred (a boy, a long and quite incredible story), who had pancreatitis - I'm sure he had even more than nine lives, the trips to the vet were frequent and desperate but he stayed with us for many years.

Your crocus photographs always make me happy to know that spring is on its way.

    1. Kim: Thank you, that is good to hear. Jazz has even got accustomed to car trips and vet visits. Which makes life easier, but makes me grieve for him too.
Spring is quite definitely on the way here.

  67. Sending hugs to you and Jazz. I can imagine how tough it is for Jazz to be going through all this- and for you to be watching and trying to help ease the pain. Hope the treatments help a ton!

Beautiful spring photos. Love seeing all the blooms and birds. :)

    1. DMS ~Jess: Thank you. It has been hard. And worrying. Treatment is minimal. We now have appetite stimulants to give him for when he stops eating and drinking (which isn't a fun procedure). They work though.

    3. Magic Love Crow: He does look like a punk pussy, though the fur is growing back - which the vet says is a good sign.
