Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. While himself's sister was staying with us she and I wandered down to the local Uniting Church to check out their recycling fete. I weakened (of course) and brought a plant and some books home.
Some of you will remember the 'canoodling scarecrows' I showed from our Community Gardens. It seems that the church owns those gardens (and makes them available to nearby apartment dwellers). They were open and I wandered through and photographed the many, many scarecrows within.
I snaffled a piece of this pigface to bring home (with the garden attendant's approval).
Some of them are much 'better' than others, but I still walked home smiling.
Hi EC - very creative scarecrows - I'd be quite scared of some of them! Thank you for the bright sunny day ... it's warm (at the moment - til tomorrow here) and plain miserably wet or damp ... depressing. The only good thing is our clocks go back - so an extra hour's sleep!!
ReplyDeleteLove that colour mesembryanthemum ... enjoy your Sunday - cheers Hilary
Hilary Melton-Butcher: That day was quite warm enough for me, but himself's sister was shivering in rather a lot of layers. I do envy your rain, but do understand that nothing but grey days can get you down. Enjoy your extra hours sleep.
DeleteThank you I did ... and amazingly we have a bright sunny day - cold though ... which I know you enjoy ... have fun with himself's sister ... cheers H
DeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: I am glad that you have sunshine. So do we - but it is warming up.
DeleteSome interesting scarecrow in the gardens. I once dressed a scarecrow with a shirt, a hat, pants and boots and sat it on a chair outdoors at the front entrance and she surprised a lot of people as they came around the corner to step on the the landing. She brought an array of positive comments.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the new week.
Hugs, Julia
Julia: I have never made a scarecrow and love the thought of yours greeting visitors to your home.
DeleteVery nice looking scare crows, too nice to scare the crows. Ha.
ReplyDeletegigihawaii: The bearded ravens in the area weren't in the slightest bit bothered by the scarecrows. Which I am glad of because I really like the ravens.
DeleteThose are really creative. Much better than the standard scarecrow.
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: I did think of teletubbies and of Michael Jackson as we wandered round...
DeleteBelli questi spaventapasseri, un tempo nei campi se ne vedevano tanti.
ReplyDeleteUna serena serata a te.
Giancarlo: I don't recall seeing scarecrows in our fields, but did smile at these in the suburbs. It is relatively early morning here (not yet seven) but I do hope that whatever time zone you are in you are enjoying it.
DeleteThese made me smile. Love the photos.
ReplyDeleteRasmaSandra: They made us smile too.
DeleteIt looks like everyone had fun making them, they are fun to see, also.
ReplyDeletemessymimi: I really like the idea of community gardens anyway, but the fun of scarecrows just adds to it - and we enjoyed seeing them too.
DeleteThey all look wonderful ... and creative.
ReplyDeletenothoughtsnoprayersnonothing: I really admired the creativity, and the fact that none of them fell into the 'traditional' scarecrow mode.
DeleteThe scarecrows are the funniest I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing them with us and giving us a chuckle.
ReplyDeleteMildred Ratched: Aren't they a hoot?
DeleteI think that some of them might cause the crows to collapse with mirth rather than being scared off!
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: A laughing crow is fine with me.
DeleteOh gosh, I love these scarecrows. A lot of creativity went into making them.
ReplyDeletemxtodis123: They are a great addition to the gardens, which are very close to our local shopping centre.
DeleteFirst of all I love that it is Sunday where you are...it is still Saturday here in Oregon USA! I always loved traveling west, turning my clock back until it was tomorrow...it just tickled my funny bone.
ReplyDeleteThe scarecrows are so fun. I wish our community garden nearby would do something like that. It would be a good fundraiser for them
Have a great day.
Barbara
Barbara Torris: Welcome and thank you. It is now a little after nine in the morning here - and decidedly Sunday.
DeleteThe Community Gardens are a relatively new addition to my suburb, and I think that the scarecrows are a wonderful addition.
Our annual Scarecrow Festival up here on the mountain was held a few weeks ago. It's always a lot of fun with many very interesting, clever scarecrows on display throughout the mountain. A friend and I participated a couple of years running....no, we didn't put ourselves out on display...but we did, two years running, create scarecrows. The first year we put a huge one on the footpath outside from her home...it was stolen the first night!!! We made a second, and it remained in place, untouched. The second year we made two based around a couple of characters from the movie "Steel Magnolias"...and we placed them outside the little local theatre that is the home of plays, musical events, etc., etc.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week ahead, EC. Cuddles to Jazz. I hope all is well with him. :)
Lee: I would most definitely go to an annual Scarecrow Festival. I am sorry that the first one you and your friend made was knicked - it must have been a beauty.
DeleteJazz is (mostly) doing well and the wardrobe continues to purr. I hope you and the furry overlords have a wonderful week.
LOVE the scarecrows, especially the smiling faced one in the third photo and the two that appear to be looking up at the sky, by the pigface. I'm thinking now about maybe making one for my garden, but how do I protect it from the rain? Aha! make it entirely from old pots, painted. Now I just have to talk my creative friend into helping me, that could take a year or two...
ReplyDeleteRiver: I do hope that you do make a scarecrow (and show us). I am not certain which one my favourite is, but I did like the one that Uglemor liked - I thought his 'attitude' was great.
DeleteNot so scary scarecrows. The one with plant pot legs is the best.
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you something funny: the police is looking for an escapee kangaroo near me! It seems people keep them as pets or something. I did not know this until I saw the "Wanted" notice online.
Uglemor: I really like that one too. He was uber cool - and knew it. Kangaroos as pets? Sigh. I do hope the escapee is found safe. I should add they blend into the background really, really well. A few weeks ago we went looking for some to show our houseguest. We KNEW they were there, but it took us a while to see them.
DeleteYou do come across some interesting sights, EC. These were fun to see, although I don't think I'd like one in my garden! We lived on a farm when I was a child, and there was a 'traditional' scarecrow who presided over my mother's vegetable garden - and did his job very well.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a good week, and the weather isn't too hot for you.
Alexia: I am a devotee of whimsy and always glad to see it. I enjoyed these (a lot) but if I was to have my own it would look different again.
DeleteThe first part of the week will be fine, but the temperatures will ramp up after that. Thursday's predicted maximum is twice the temperature we achieved yesterday.
What a hoot! This must have been fun to create!
ReplyDeleteSusan Kane: I hope the makers got as much pleasure from the creation as we did with the finished product.
DeleteI love scarecrows! Thankyou
ReplyDeletedinahmow: My pleasure. I was really, really glad that the gardens were open and we could wander inside.
Deletelaurie: A village of scarecrows is a wonderful image. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWe have a scarecrow competition here at one of the garden centres. Lots of fun and reasons to smile when one sees so many scarecrows!
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: I am encouraged by the number of places which have scarecrow competitions. It is rare to see them here. And definitely smile worthy.
DeleteI bet it was fun for them to put together the scarecrows. I haven't seen one yet this year, I'm sure I will before it's all said and done. :)
ReplyDeletemail4rosey: Sadly, we rarely see scarecrows, so I thoroughly enjoyed these.
DeleteScarecrows as art. We had the most marvelous Jack-o-lanterns at work, but I cannot use a camera there. There were pumpkin pigs and cows and a pumpkin with her hair in curlers taking a bubble bath.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Janie Junebug: Those Jack-o-lanterns sound amazing. I would really, really like to see the pumpkin taking a bubble bath in particular. They are another thing we don't see here.
DeleteThese are wonderful. I wondered, and then remembered, it's time to plant your gardens.
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: It is. Some of the gardens have seedlings in them, and others have obviously been turned over in readiness. We hope to get our vegie garden going in the next week or so.
DeleteVery creative and original.
ReplyDeleteLove them!!
I would walk home smiling as well. ; )))
Caterina: Smiles never go astray do they?
DeleteI adore those scarecrows! So many varieties and much imagination went into them.
ReplyDeleteOf course you should bring home books. Why leave the little darlings homeless? ;)
River Fairchild: I was quite restrained. I only brought home seven books. And agree about the scarecrows.
DeleteI love these scarecrows!! They are all wonderful! Made me smile! EC, is that you in the picture??? If it is, you are beautiful! Big Hugs!
ReplyDeleteMagic Love Crow: I was the photographer, not the subject. She is beautiful isn't she? (Himself's sister.)
DeleteShe is beautiful. Her light is shining, because you are around her! Big Hugs!
DeleteMagic Love Crow: Huge thanks. Her light shines always whether I am there or not. Which is right and proper.
DeleteThey are so much fun! Every one of them made me smile. Thank you for brightening my day. :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: I am so glad that you smiled too - and am very happy to have brightened your day.
DeleteYes, if I was crow, I think I'd be scared. I suppose the church is not that old but I would be wary of a garden around an old church where people might have been buried. While crows probably aren't a problem the scarecrows would make great perches for birds and supply good nesting material.
ReplyDeleteAndrew: It is a very new church and has no graveyard attached. I suspect that the birds do pilfer pieces of scarecrow - and probably fruit and vegies when they are ripe.
DeleteWow, such creative scarecrows. I love that hippo-looking one :)
ReplyDeleteI just came from a party and on the lawn next door was a scarecrow made from old clothes. I also made one myself out of old clothes.
Jamie Ghione: I really haven't seen scarecrows in many a long year anywhere but in these community gardens. It seems that they are much more common on your side of the world.
DeleteI'm not surprised you smiled while walking past them and photographing. I smiled just from looking at your photos. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOlga Godim: I am glad. There is always room in my world for quirky fun.
Deletesome very creative scarecrows there. I believe that particular pigface may be an Aussie native.
ReplyDeleteAnna: I had a vague thought that it might be - and will investigate. It certainly thrives in the community garden and I hope will at our house too (about a kilometre away).
DeleteI was impressed at the range of scarecrows and will keep an eye out to see if they add more.
Wow! What clever ideas to use for scarecrows and perfect for the season. 'll bet it took a long time to put them all together! Hugs, RO
ReplyDeleteRO: I hope it was a labour of love. I really enjoyed them. Hugs to you too. Have you got your computer back?
DeleteThese are so much fun to look at, thank you. I'm smiling too!
ReplyDeleteHow are you and how is your cat?
e: Thank you. I am happy to spread smiles. Jazz is doing well at the moment which is lovely. He surprised the vet, and hopefully we won't have another episode. I am fine(ish). How about you and Lukas?
DeleteWe're both fine. I've exhausted myself so I'm paying for it but I'm sure that is familiar to you. Wishing you a good week.
Deletee: Sadly yes. And there needs to be a stronger word than exhausted.
Deletea little whimsy goes a long way, thanks
ReplyDeleteLinda Starr: I am a big, big fan of quirky fun.
DeleteWOW... I've never seen so many, and so varied, a selection of scarecrows...they are fantastic!!😊😊
ReplyDeleteI do hope you are well, my friend...and Jazz too?
Lots of love and hugs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ygraine: I have never seen so many scarecrows in one place either - and loved how different they are.
DeleteJazz and I are ok. How are you doing? Huge hugs.
Dear EC
ReplyDeleteSome of those scarecrows are just a little disturbing...or is that just me? It's great to see people getting involved and obviously having fun too. Hope all is well (or at least improving) for you all.
Best wishes
Ellie
Ellie Foster: I don't think it is just you. Some of them are decidedly odd, but I appreciated the variety. Thank you for your well wishes. I hope all is good for you and yours.
DeleteI love creativity. It gives me hope.
ReplyDeleteThere are folk artists in south Alabama that built sculptures along side the road that are remarkable.
Rick Watson: I am an appreciator rather than a creator and am endlessly grateful to those with vision and drive. I would love to see those folk art sculptures.
DeleteI love these. They are so creative and colorful. They do make you smile.
ReplyDeleteP.S., E.C. will you email me about Lee's tour? My emails are bouncing back. (mcbooktours@gmail.com)
Mason Canyon: I am going past the gardens a little later this morning - and expect to smile again. Email sent.
DeleteI adore all these scarecrows. they look like giant spirit dolls. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJ C: I was particularly taken with how different they are.
DeleteThose are just plain AWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteStrayer: Aren't they fun? Which we all need more of.
DeleteI adore this theme. I've always talked to scarecrows. I know. That's me, mad as a hatter but when they shake and move, they are extraordinary. Yours ones are just awesome.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Wisewebwoman: I talk to rather a lot of inanimate objects - and always have done. I wish you could have seen the third one in particular dancing in the wind.
DeleteI've never seen such creativity bestowed on scarecrows. Each of these is so unique.
ReplyDeleteMyrna R.: I really appreciated the originality too.
DeleteThe scarecrows are awesome. I loved seeing your pictures. I love how interesting each one is.
ReplyDeleteMary Kirkland: I didn't like all of them, but loved the creativity.
DeleteWhat fun! Some of those scarecrows are a bit disturbing, but the couple made me laugh. Thanks for sharing them! :-)
ReplyDeleteDiane Henders: I smiled at them all - even the ones which were on the disturbing side.
DeleteThose scarecrows are so fun to look at, made me smile☺☺
ReplyDeletenatalia20041989: I am glad to make you smile.
DeleteLovely scarepersons, big as well.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: Some of them were big, weren't they? But fun.
DeleteFabulous post.
ReplyDeleteFabulous photographs.
I did enjoy seeing all of these scarecrows. Scarecrow festivals and events seem to be getting more and more popular.
There are many across the UK and if ever I get the chance to go they are great fun.
At the moment it seems all about Pumpkins though!
Enjoy these last October days.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. I would like to see more scare crows here - and hope this is a craze which takes off. We see a few pumpkins in the stores but haven't seen any decorated ones. I hope your October and November are both great.
DeleteI love plant samples:) It took me a bit to figure out you were talking about a plant. I kept looking for the pig-faced scarecrow. ROGL.
ReplyDeleteSandra Cox: Sorry about that. I know that plant best as pigface. It is perhaps more accurately called carpobrotus and thrives here. The cutting I took (hacked) is showing signs of root growth already. If the vandal birds leave it alone I hope it naturalises.
DeleteThose are fun! Today I have a picture of a land whale, and no, I don't mean a portrait of me.
ReplyDeleteLand Whale
The Real Cie: I will be off to check it out in a moment. Sadly I am definitely a whale.
DeleteThey are very creative scarecrows Sue. Hope all is well. Have a good week
ReplyDeleteMargaret Birding For Pleasure: They are creative aren't they? I am ok, and hope you are recovered from your trip.
DeleteWhat a great collection! To get ready for my trick or treaters, I now have three ghosts and two pumpkins on my porch and a skull in a cage, hanging from a tree.
ReplyDeleteT. Powell Coltrin: Have fun. I haven't seen any houses with Halloween decorations here, and don't expect to either.
DeleteThose are FABULOUS scarecrows - what a great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteJemi Fraser: Isn't it fun? I have no idea whose idea it was originally, but the community gardeners have taken it up in a big way.
DeleteI would totally enjoy a walk around that area, enjoying the creativity would keep me smiling all the way home, too!
ReplyDeletePS: You asked about what my boys think about me posting cute pictures... I've never named them in nearly 10 years of blogging, so their friends won't find out - unless the boys tell them :)
Mark Koopmans: Creativity always makes me smile too. As a teenager I resented my parents having (much less displaying) photographs of me - cute or not. My photo phobia continues to this day. I hope your boys are more amenable than me.
DeleteWhat a neat bunch of scarecrows!
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: We think so too - and I am watching to see if they put up any more.
DeleteGreat. Love.
ReplyDeleteR's Rue: I am glad.
DeleteI've never seen such a varied collection of scarecrows. What a great idea for Halloween!
ReplyDeleteOn Sunday I had to drop off some papers at a house I'd not been to before, and they had the most imaginative Halloween props and scenes set up in their rather large, lightly treed front yard. It was fun to see in daylight but I'm glad I wasn't going there after dark!
jenny_o: I think the timing of the display was co-incidence rather than planned. We really don't do Halloween here. I really enjoyed them though - during the day.
DeleteHa ha - brilliant!
ReplyDeleteLady Fi: We thought so too.
DeleteHi Sue, thought of you and found your blog again to say hi. Hope all is well? I shall flick back through your blog for an update! From Pam, formerly of LLC, now of opera... x
ReplyDeletePaintedDuchess: How wonderful to hear from you again. Opera? Wow. I hope you are LOVING it.
DeleteIf I had a veggie garden I'd definitely create a scarecrow to patrol it! However I think the birds are all used to scarecrows now and don't take any notice.
ReplyDeleteShammickite: We have a vegie garden most years (and must get going on this years). The birds ignore it. Perhaps I am scarecrow enough.
DeleteWOW......lots of very creative people with those scarecrows! I really like #3...though it's too pretty to be scary, lol. Maybe we can remind each other to do a bit of yoga.......I'm so on and off again.
ReplyDeleteSandy: Lots of these ones were pretty and/or stylish. Despite good intentions I have yet to get off my fundament and find a yoga class nearby. Feel free to remind me.
DeleteI keep trying to decide which one I like the best and keep changing my mind:)
ReplyDeleteSandra Cox: I did too. I was impressed with the very cool dude with flower pot legs though.
DeleteDear EC, always I'm amazed at the endless creativity of humans as displayed in this array of scarecrows. The first scarecrow I saw was in a corn field here in Missouri when I was seven years old. The straw man really was scaring off the crows that hovered over the corn stalks! Peace.
ReplyDeleteDee: I am endlessly amazed (and grateful) for creativity (whatever the genre). I suspect these are cityslicker scarecrows and wouldn't scare off any bird. I enjoyed them just the same.
DeleteWhat a wonderful selection of creative Halloween scarecrows.
ReplyDeleteThanks EC. Definitely my favourite the baby suit. Although the poor baby doesn’t look too happy, did the rain wash away its features ?
Susan B: I thought that one looked a bit 'teletubbyish'. It didn't seem to have much of a face, perhaps that is yet to come...
Delete
