Sunday Selections #490

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme. This has been a difficult year across the world.

However I have been heartened by the community spirit which has perhaps not emerged, but certainly been more visible.

The teddy bear trail continues, and I still see bears (and various other stuffed animals) in windows smiling at passersby.  I smile back at them.

I have taken you to a suburban shopping centre to see the statue 'A Delicate Moment' before.  We stopped in on our way down to the lake to see whether locals had rugged her up for winter.  They had (though this has been a warmer winter than usual and she doesn't yet have boots on).

I was very pleased to see a community pantry beside her.  A well stocked community pantry.

Smiling, we continued our journey to the lake hoping for a kangaroo fix.  The park was more crowded than usual (school holidays) but many were masked and social distancing was in play.
At first we thought there were no kangaroos - but we were wrong.
They were there, totally 'laxed as usual.

It was a sunny day, but on the chilly side.  Just the same the diamond sparkle on the lake lifted our jaded spirits.

On our way home we stopped in at another suburban shopping centre - where there was yet more community spirit on display.

I liked the water feature near it too.  While the photos don't do it justice there was a steady stream of water flowing across it.

I hope your week is safe, healthy and filled with sparkle.

    1. Alex J. Cavanaugh: That statue is a barometer of weather and issues of concern. When our fires (and the air) were at their worst in summer she was given a mask. Last winter as well as a scarf she was given a pair of ugh boots. Her local community values her. I do hope the artists know how much she is loved.

  9. A dressed statue is a fun thing to see. We have some weird things going on with statues here. Sometimes it is comical when a rock and roll star is festooned with graffiti. I have a young male friend who is big into cosplay, etc. It is fun to read their comments about everything going down. In the states we are all or nothing which could be a trait of all Anglo countries or few of them. I don't know.

The roos are quite a surprise. I can't imagine deer behaving that way. We do get tame squirrels in some places.

    1. Ann Bennett: The suburb in which A Delicate Moment has been places had another much loved statue a few years ago. That statue was stolen, and A Delicate Moment is the replacement. I love that they have clearly adopted it.
The roos are frequently seen in that park. They mostly ignore people and lift my spirits each time I see them.
While there are certainly divisions in our community we (mostly) seem to work together quite well.

  15. It's fun seeing the statue dressed for warmth. I enjoy seeing the kangaroos also. I wonder what they eat. We have a beautiful family of deer, a doe and two cute fawns that has been eating in our vegetable garden and also munching on my Hostas and bushes. I'm not too impressed.

I love the Community pantry and Street library. You have a caring neighbourhood. I think that I got a glimpse of your reflection in the pantry glass.

  18. That was a beautiful walk on a winter day. A community pantry, i had not thought of that. We have the food bank, and food distributions at the homeless ministry, but such a pantry is a lovely idea. Some who do not "qualify" for help could take advantage of such a thing.

  31. I do love the concept of the little libraries.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The concept of a community pantry is totally new to me. How does that work, Sue? Do people leave food in it to be taken by those who need it? Is it designed only for people in difficult circumstance or, like a community library, is everyone encouraged to use it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. David M. Gascoigne: The idea is that those who can afford to do so contribute non perishable food, and those who need it can access it. They are not monitored and are on a honesty based system. I believe they work, I hope they work. On my way to Lifeline I pass a centre which supports those who are homeless and those who are at risk of homelessness. There are meals availabe during the week (if you know where to go). Weekends are a different matter. Food in the city is limited and even more so in the suburbs. The centre makes up 'weekend packs' which contain food which can be carried easily, is light and doesn't require refrigeration or heating. I contribute to those packs on my way to Lifeline and have done so for a number of years now. The staff at the Early Morning Centre recognise me - and so do some of their clients. Which warms my heart.

  37. They sure deck out statues there. I like that. They do here, in Portland mainly, but nowadays many have been destroyed by "protesters". Well they call themselves that but the destroyers are gangs of mostly white young folk who seem mostly bent on destruction and fighting the police for unknown reasons. They even set fire to the base of a famous elk statue, for no apparent reason other than destruction. We are finally getting hot here as you get colder. I love the shimmering lake.

  43. How nice to see the community pantries! We have Food Banks here, but access is strictly monitored by volunteers. But we do have "honour stands": A little kiosk, or even a simple table that local farmers or market gardeners set up by the side of the road. Vegetables (and sometimes other products) are marked with prices but there's nobody there to take the money or monitor who takes what. It's heartwarming that it still works even in these increasingly selfish times - people take the produce and leave money behind (instead of the other way around).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Diane Henders: I used to see those honesty stands in the country - but haven't for many years. The community pantry is new, but I have heard of them popping up in other parts of the city - and really hope that they continue, grow and remain. Even when/if Covid 19 is largely controlled there will always be people who need some help and support.

  63. Sue, I hope your week was healthy, safe and filled with sparkle. Loved the photos which highlighted a caring community. Love the idea of a community pantry and i'm a big fan of those little libraries. I'd like to build one in front of our house to house some of the thousands of books i have, lol. Yes, just looking at previous comment. Lovely to see Vagabond. haven't heard from her in awhile.

    1. Denise Covey: Thank you. I really like little libraries but on the occasions I have contributed I struggled to release any books. Which is so very wrong.
And isn't it lovely to see Vagabonde out and about in the blogosphere.

  64. It was fun to see the uniqueness of the Street Library box here ... There are no book boxes on the road like that in my country.

    1. Sandra Cox: Jazz is asleep at the moment - but given that it is not yet dawn he can be forgiven. Knocking firmly on wood with my fingers crossed he is doing better at the moment.

  67. Good morning this journey along with you feels like I stepped off the train and touched ground on a day in your world. That statue is something with an added hat and scarf which oddly enough some folks do about here as well. Especially this huge bunny statue in Minneapolis. I think I've shared him before but he's always touched by the mood of the day or month! Stay safe, keep reading and looking forward to more jaunts with you!

    1. abasozora: They are indeed kangaroos - relaxed and enjoying the sun.

    2. Are kangaroos dangerous or like pets? because lately I've seen videos of kangaroos fighting with people, but in my lessons as a child I only explained the origin of kangaroos not giving more specifications

    3. abasozora: Kangaroos are very rarely dangerous. They are mostly gentle (except to each other). They will sometimes attack people, but have to be provoked.
