Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme.This week (for a change) I am going to start with early morning shots from home.
Then I am going to take you out with me a little later in the day for another trip to town and yet more public art some of which I have shown before.
Shots of the sky as I walked to catch the first of my buses (for some reason best known to itself Blogger played silly buggers with the order of my photos).
The art in the city centre is very varied and I think there is probably something there for everyone.

DeleteWow, what an amazing variety of art! The sheep made me giggle; and the 'Life Cycle'... made me shudder. It's beautifully done, but for some reason it reminds me of a venomous snake. I actualy like snakes - we have lots of garter snakes around our place and I quite enjoy watching them. But 'Life Cycle' looks dangerous. Maybe that was the point: None of us are getting out of this alive... ;-)

DeleteDiane Henders: I may never look at Life Cycle in the same way again. You are right, we won't get out alive. I can appreciate snakes from a distance. Many of ours are venomous, some VERY much so. Snakes have been seen in the city too.

ReplyDeleteRiver: The Nature artwork is one I don't think I have photographed before - and I hope it stays. I suspect the pavement art is temporary and hope that it gets replaced. For some reason blogger again decided you were spam.
DeleteI'm afraid that "life cycle" doesn't do anything for me (or to me) but everything else raises a smile, even the Brutalist sculpture. It's a lot less brutal than most of it's cohort and of course, nothing can be truly brutal when there's pink involved :)

Deletethe dogs are happy art. Some of the others, hmmmm. I've never heard of Brutalist as an art style, but now that you name that style, I can see it.

DeleteI have probably stated the obvious before, but art enhances and humanizes a city. One may not appreciate all that is on display but that in no way diminishes its value. It's an opportunity for learning and personal enrichment. Canberra is in so many ways an enlightened city.

ReplyDeleteI love to see the art in your city - so much to enjoy. It is great when people react so well to art - hugging it, for instance! At the moment, we have a painted heart trail, but this is only temporary. I particularly liked the stalking cat/leopard/jaguar.

DeleteThe fountain is my favorite - combining still art with moving water. Most of our cities have a fountain or two of some kind, usually at strategic points (townhall, park, center). I like them all.

Charlotte (MotherOwl): I am not a fan of the brutalist style - but thought it was improved with the reflected sunrise. The dogs are not impaled - it is their support to ensure that they are stable - and in person you really don't notice the skewer through their middle.
