Sunday Selections #229

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life.  The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.  Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

Like River I usually run with a theme. We have been promised rain and promised rain.  And the weather boffins have lied like pigs in mud.  This week it finally arrived.  In three days we got more rain than we have received in the last three months combined.  With apologies to those in the US who have had much more than they want or need, I loved it, the garden loved it, the skinny one liked it and the cats loathed it.

However, by the first sunny day the smaller portion had gone stir crazy.  So we went out, to the nearby Googong Dam to watch it run over the spillway.  As is usual many photos follow.

We had some trouble getting access to a spot where we could see the spillway.  The roads had been flooded and were blocked off.

At the top the water looked serene.

Then we found a friendly ranger who told us where we could find walking trails to a lookout.  The trails were uneven, and heavy going but we are both really pleased we made the effort.  The water coming over the spillway looked great - and sounded incredible.

You don't say...

And watching the water spill into the Queanbeyan River below the dam was lovely too.

The further away from the spillway the quieter and calmer the water became.  It was still moving suprisingly fast though.

Words For Wednesday

The lovely Delores at Under the Porch Light has been running this meme for a considerable period of time, week after week - even through the A to Z challenge.  Sadly she is having issues with her computer freezing on her (much as my brain does when faced with some of her words).  She has asked that someone take over on a temporary basis and I have stuck my hand up.
Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...
Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

This weeks prompts:
Call
Leg
Loving
Calculator
Hydrant
Want

And/or
Bag
Bruise
Scarf
Resolute
Float
Change

Like River I usually run with a theme.  I have been wrestling with sadness this week.  A friend and fellow volunteer with Lifeline was hit by a car three weeks ago.  Her left shoulder is shattered and has been rebuilt.  Her left ankle is broken.  Her pelvis is broken in several places and pushed out of alignment.  She will need a new hip.  When she was taken to hospital she was also bleeding into her brain.  Her right side was completely unresponsive.  The bleeding has been stopped and the medicos hope that she will regain feeling and movement on her right side.  They aren't promising anything though.  She will be in hospital for many weeks and recuperating for many more.  She is also the carer for her elderly mama (whose only language I don't speak).  Her mama has cancer.  My heart aches for her.  And for the fact that I can't do anything, except stop in and say hello for the ten minutes which is all she can cope with.

I almost always turn to nature for solace and comfort when I am down, so we headed down to the lake on a crisp and clear morning last week.  And it did help.  Still sad, still feeling helpless, but smiling too.  I obviously wanted a lot of comfort - and many photos follow.

I am sure that swan was mooning me...

It really is a lovely spot, and is less than half an hours drive from home.

Like River I usually run with a theme. Winter has started and this last week has been on the brisk side.  By Thursday morning our temperatures had been in the minus range more often and for longer than we had made it to positive figures.  Most days we struggled to get to double digits.

Crisp, clear, and I think beautiful.  The cats don't agree.

After a few cold mornings my slow moving brain remembered something I was sent earlier this year.  Photos of frozen bubbles.

So the next photos are of a chilly experiment.  I headed out just after first light, armed with detergent, a piece of wire twisted so I could blow bubbles and my camera.  I really needed more arms.  There was a frost, and the weather boffins had told us that we would have a temperature of around minus four C.

The bubble had certainly started to freeze.  They lasted nearly ten minutes before popping, and left a shell behind...

Not a complete failure, but it obviously needs to get colder.  Which it will.  So this mad woman will be doing camera dances in future chilly dawns.
