Sunday Selections

Sunday Selections, brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, is an ongoing theme where participants post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Anyone can join in, just post your photos under the Sunday Selections title, link back to Kim, then add your name to her Linky list at Frogpondsrock.

And my theme for this week is Eastern Rosellas.  I hadn't seen them for a few weeks and wasn't sure whether I had just not looked at the right time, or whether they had moved on.  And then, last Thursday early, they reappeared.  They are almost bottom of the pecking order so rarely get the feeder or the apple to themselves.  And like many of the birds we see, they LOVE apple.  Green for preference.  And on the grey days we have been having they are a joyous splash of colour.

  1. They are such lovely birds. I don't have them here at home, I have the Green Rosellas. But 3/4 of a kilometre down the road and there they are. I think I might be a bit high up for them. That red is such a glorious colour. Thank you :)

  2. We have different Rosellas here in Adelaide too, but the flash of colour in the trees is a very welcome sight. Yours are lovely.

  3. Thanks Kim, River. We get the Crimson rosellas and the Easterns and that is it for the rosella world. But we also get the King Parrots and very occasionally the Superb Parrots (accurately named) and Rainbow Lorikeets. And not far from us we see Red Rumped Parrots known to one of my sisters in law as Bum Birds. All a joy.

  8. Great shots! I love their colours. We can only see such colourful birds in the Zoo or the petshop. Imagine having them in the trees in your garden. I'm almost jealous! ;-)

  9. I just commented over at River's that I love the splash of colour that the parrots add to her photos and pop over here and see more beautiful parrots. Great captures.

  11. Glorious colours, we have just had some white faced herons perching in our big tree, over a few days, they seem to be courting, just can not get a good pic. thanks for sharing these lovely birds. Hope the smaller portion is improving. xxx

  12. They're beautiful--I don't think i've ever seen pictures of those before or knew they existed.

  13. They are a joy aren't they? The smaller portion and I refer to them as budgies on steroids. They are really not all that much bigger than budgies. Just brighter.

  14. And these are outside your house?! We have NO birds near our flat so I'm very envious but pleased you've shared these pics. We went to a friends house the other weekend and sat outside in the back garden, and all I could do for ages was comment on the bird song, realising we don't hear any where we are. We're too close to the main road I think and there are no trees either. And bars on the windows. Really. Now I want to move having read that back. Hahahaha. True though.

  15. Great pictures. I wish I had such gorgeous birds right outside my house.

  16. I love the contrast of the colour of the feathers against the branches. Canberra throws up a lot of contrasts like that, hey.

  17. Great photos - thanks for bringing us the birdy joy.

  18. What?! We have no Rosella of any color here in Minneapolis. Outside of the cardinal, our small birds tend to be brown...

How beautiful it must be to look in our yard and see such a colorful bird!

  19. It may be freezing in Canberra - and full of vile politicians - but there are such brilliantly coloured compensations

  20. I can't begin to imagine seeing such a colorful avian sight out my window! It seems so wonderfully exotic to me, it must be quite something to have such beautiful birds be part of your almost-everyday scenery. Aren't they incredible! Thank you for sharing them with those of us whose breath is taken away by our gorgeous but monochromatic mountain bluebirds! :-)

  21. Laloofah: Thanks and welcome. I suspect that your mountain bluebirds would take my breath away too.

  22. You can get a peek at a couple of them on this post, if you'd like. They seem to have borrowed their beautiful blue from your rainbow-hued Eastern Rosella friends! :-)
