Sunday Selections

Sunday Selections, brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, is an ongoing theme where participants post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Anyone can join in, just post your photos under the Sunday Selections title, link back to Kim, then add your name to her Linky list at Frogpondsrock.

Like River, I like to have a theme for my post and this week I am posting photographs of some of the birds who came to see us.

  1. I like how that sulpher-crested cockatoo is looking at us. The rest are just so colourful and beautiful, I haven't been that close to galahs since I owned one, 1970 I think that was.
    Thanks for the link back.

  2. I had been missing your Sunday photographs. The lorikeet (?) is such a bright scarlet, what is its name?

  3. I love your gorgeous backyard birds. Quite exotic by California standards!

I think it's getting Larry excited--he's suddenly purring loudly, shouting and poking me with his claw through the back of the chair. I guess it's making him hungry...

  4. Such beautiful colours on the lorikets :)

  5. River: I have been trying for a loooong time to get a photo of a cockie looking at me with its crest raised.

Kim: I am flattered that you noticed my absence. The scarlet bird is a young male king parrot, caught just as the sun was going down which gave him some extra colour.

Paper Chipmunk: I know our cats really, really like mice on the TV, but the birds on the PC do nothing for them. Thankfully. At least it was Larry poking you and not Dom.

Marita: The really bright one is an Eastern Rosella, caught with his fist full of apple. We put out a green (it has to be green) apple most days, and a surprising number of the birds love it.

  6. Now those are some very intriguing and inspired birds! Nothing like that around here, that's for sure! I love the colors...

  7. Thanks DJan. We don't have woodpeckers or hummingbirds and our magpies are different to yours ... There are beautiful birds where ever you find yourself.

  8. Oh, I miss Aussie birds! I loved to sit out in the yard and watch them. The Sulphur Crested and Galahs are two of my faves. These are terrific shots! Thanks for sharing and bringing back some fond memories.

  9. Karen: Cockatoos can be a pest in parts of Oz, but I have a very soft spot for them and the galahs. Glad I could bring back some good memories for you.

  10. What beautiful shots! I'm glad you posted them :)

  11. You have inspired me to set up a bird feeding station. It's a win-win situation. The birds get a treat and the photographer gets marvellous close-ups. Love them all, particularly the snacking rosella with the blurry, water(?) background. He really stands out beautifully.

  12. Mrs Catch: Thank you. We get hours and hours and hours of fun from our bird feeder. And now buy bird seed in 20kg bags. You are right - it was quite damp when the eastern rosella was munching on its apple - but its colours gleamed.

  13. Great to see a King Parrot. We don't get them down here. There are a few yellow tailed black cockies but nothing like up there in ACT/NSW. Lovely photos. Thanks

  14. Bonza photos, i especially like the Cockatoo in the 1st photo because he seems to be on the lookout for invaders :-).

  15. What a great selection of bird visitors! I really miss all the birds ho would come and feed at the fig tree at the old house. We lived closer to the city then but certainly had more bird life in our lives. Stupid builders clearing all the trees to build houses (including ours! And I think it was a paddock before this, so I guess they didn't really clear any trees, but, anyway!)

  16. Cat Drawings: We very, very rarely get the yellow tailed black cockatoos and when we do I am on a high for the rest of the day.

WindsmokeA: Thanks. I think that cocky thought I was an invader - I was walking up towards the front steps.

permanently amanda: As your trees grow, the birds will come. They are certainly opportunists.

  17. These are wonderful photographs.Down here at Lockwood weget the eastern rosellas, cockatoos and galahs all of whom seem to feed from our bird feeder in shifts across the day. How lucky you are to see a King Parrot!!! Its plumage is an utterly rich colour.

I hope you are recovering as well as can be expected.

  18. You have the most delightful visitors ever! Lovely shots.

  19. Christine: We often get six or seven species of native birds visiting each day. Truly privileged. The king parrots are regulars for about six months of the year and I miss them when they are back in the hills.

    ladyfi: Thank you.

  20. Those photos are so beautiful. I love the colors.

  21. Strayer: Thank you. Interestingly, lots of our birds sound truly dreadful. Squarks doesn't begin to cover it - but they look lovely.

  22. oh I love them - gorgeous photos and gorgeous birds. thank you El Chi X X

  23. Marshall Stacks: Thank you. I know you love them too.

  24. How are you getting so close to take these pictures? Are you wearing a tree costume or something. Beautiful photos.

    ReplyDelete
  25. barbfroman: We have a feeder on which hangs from the eves on our front verandah. Most of the photos are taken from our lounge room - looking at the birds who are only two or three feet away. I like the idea of the tree costume though.

  26. BIRDIES! xD These pictures are fantastic! it's amazing how you got so close tot hem, bravo on the superb photography btw, are you taking classes?

  27. LOVE the S-C Cockatoo at the top - he looks so contented and proud of himself!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Punk Chopsticks: Thank you. No lessons, just a good point and shoot camera.

Kath: He did, didn't he? But he was king of the castle at that time, and had no other birds trying to take his spot so of course he was pleased with himself.

  29. Gorgeous photos! I keep going through my own photos and thinking, "I'd love to post this! And this!" but can't think of a good reason for doing so. It's just occurred to me this could--and should!--be my reason. :)

  35. Absolutely wonderful birds, always so colorful with lots of character. Thanks for sharing these, they always make me smile. Thank you also for your very sweet comments regarding my father-in-law's recent surgery. I read them to him and to the rest of the family and they appreciate your kindness very much. Hope your week is going well and I have enjoyed popping in tonight.

  36. You know, on one level I know that these birds exist in the wild...

And on another level I am amazed that you live where these birds live...

  37. Denise: Thank you. I am so glad that things are going so well for your F.I.L.

Pearl: Thanks. They are a never ending source of joy. We usually get four or five different species visiting each day, and up to seven or more. And, on really, really excellent days have had fifty birds or more decorating the lawn in front of the house.

  38. Gorgeous birds, such wonderful colour and character :)

  39. I hope I didn't leave a double comment! Anyway, love the pics and birds, but do pity you any noise they make - my neighbor had a very noisy pair of parrots that tormented us all for years through her walls. But the colors are so spectacular. I have mostly duller birds here, but for occassional Blue Jays and bright red crested Cardinals (all of whom I love).

Hope this comment makes it through, either as Spectra or Silky we shall see...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Specta: Just the one comment. And as spectrumwoman this time. I am always happy to see you, whatever your guise. The birds are noisy, but I really don't mind. There are worse noises and they give us so much joy.

  41. I am still in amazement over your backyard birds! Gorgeous, colorful etc

    ReplyDelete
  42. Kim @ Stuff: Thank you - they are a joy. Every day.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Your birds are just absolutely breathtaking! How wonderful that you are so adept with a camera so that the rest of us can have fun at your feeders along with you! :-)

I just can't get over how beautiful these birds are.

I think I'll finally be participating in Kim's Sunday Selections soon, I was noticing recently I definitely have some languishing photos that I want to share but that don't fit in to any planned posts. What a great idea this meme is.

Thanks for sharing all that beauty with us!

  44. Laloofah: Thank you. They are a daily source of joy and wonder. I am looking forward to you playing Sunday Selections.
