Sunday Selections # 62

Sunday Selections, brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, is an ongoing theme where participants post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

Anyone can join in, just post your photos under the Sunday Selections title, link back to Kim, then add your name to her Linky list at Frogpondsrock.

As usual I am running with a theme.  And for something completely different, it is birds again.  This little gem has been visiting us for the last few days, and we are happy to see him.  He is called the Common Bronzewing pigeon, and is apparently found in most parts of Australia but I cannot remember ever seeing him before.

I think he is truly beautiful.

The colours on his wings are particularly spectacular.

    1. Thanks Ron. He is one of those birds who look a bit plain until the sun hits at just the right angle. Then those wings just shimmer with colour.

    1. Christine: Thank you. It is early the week after next that things will get a bit tense - and I will post about that early this coming week. Isn't it interesting that a bird classified as common seems to be such a hidden gem.

  9. He looks a lot like what I would call a mourning dove.

    1. Snowbrush: I just went away and looked up your mourning dove. You are right, the shape is very similar, but I didn't see those incredible colours on the mourning dove.

  14. I reckon he stopped by for a feed and a drink on his way to somewhere else down the track. You could call his wings Rainbow Wings :-).

    1. Windsmoke: He was back again this evening so perhaps he has delayed his trip. Rainbow wings they are.

  15. I've never even heard of a common bronzewing pigeon, I've certainly never seen one!
But then, I'm not much of a birdwatcher.
He's very lovely and I hope he continues to visit your garden.

  20. I don't think there is anything common about this beautiful pigeon. As if someone dropped their watercolour palette on it. Wonderful.

    1. Carolina: I was surprised at his name too. We have not seen him before, so he is not common on that front, and his feathers make him anything but common to look at.

    1. Strayer: He seems to have been misnamed on every front. Only one other Australian blogger knew about him - so he isn't common and I agree his colours don't look bronze. Peacock winged pigeon?

  25. oh my ... he is beautiful! I have a deserted house next door to me and we never get anything as nice as him.

I am always stoked when we get a couple of white ones :)

I am adding binoculars to my "to buy" list on the offchance we get some funky-arse birds like wot you get, and I just ain't seeing them proper.

    1. Dee: All the birds that discover our place become plump. Between the feeder and the lawn (where we spread more seed) there are plenty of easy pickings.
