Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.
Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.
Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post
some
photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me.
Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. While I continue to take photos (lots of photos) in the garden I am going somewhere different this week.
The nearest shopping centre of any size that we frequent is much like other shopping centres, a largely characterless mall. However they have brightened up the approach by putting murals in the underground parking area. I don't like all of them, but I DO like that they are there. I got some very strange looks as I wandered through camera in hand. How sad, never mind.
Next week's Sunday Selections will be different again (I hope). I have rather a lot of medical appointments and some ongoing commitments to meet. However on Wednesday afternoon I hope to get a long awaited treat. A treat which fires, the corona virus and some specific challenges have postponed. Barking is involved, but no dogs... Feel free to guess what my treat is, though I won't give it away until next week.
I hope your weeks include treats as well.
All of these murals make me smile. Quite fabulous work Artists can do
ReplyDeleteGranny Annie: They make me smile too - and improve the car park immeasurably.
DeleteWell, they are certainly better than a blank cement wall.
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: Much, much better. My claustrophobic self really doesn't like underground car parks and this helps.
DeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteI particularly like the inquisitive giraffe. The murals certainly brighten up all that concrete - more art in our cities, please!
Best wishes for a happy week and I look forward to hearing about your treat...
Ellie
Ellie Foster: Thank you. Definitely more art. I am endlessly grateful that my city has so much public art.
DeleteI love the murals and just about everything your city does to entertain/beautify its surroundings! I wish the entire world would take note of it.
ReplyDeleteBarking but no dogs... I'm stymied, unless you've decided to buy a wood chipper and create bark art? ;)
River Fairchild: No wood chipper. And a big, big hooray for public art.
DeleteThey are beautiful the murals, so vivid.
ReplyDeleteBob Bushell: They are fun aren't they?
DeleteI admire the dedication to art you have in your community. The murals are a treat in a desert of gray cinderblocks. Hmmm, barking and no dogs, Could you be going to a marine park or perhaps a chocolatier for chocolate bark. Have a good time. I look forward to seeing what all the barking will be about next week. ;=)
ReplyDeleteAnn Bennett: Public art is wonderful. There is more popping up all over the city and I love it. And no, you haven't identified my treat either.
DeleteThe murals are very cool! I'm always fascinated, not only by the artistry, but also by the motivation behind the subject. The giraffe is fabulous, but... why a giraffe? These are the things that keep me wondering. :-)
ReplyDeleteYour secret treat has me curious! Barking, but no dogs. Hmmm...
Diane Henders: I tried hard to see a connection between the murals - and failed. I really like the giraffe but like you have to ask why?
DeleteMy secret treat involves a little known Australian.
The Giraffe head is definitely my favorite mural.
ReplyDeleteI'm so intrigues with your mysterious treat. I know fires have been destructive in your country and also the Corona virus but I wonder what kind of pet you are getting. Some animals that bark but are not a dog could be, a monkey, a macaw, a cockatoo or an ostrich. Probably not a baboon, a jackal or a fox.
Good luck on next Wednesday.
Hugs, Julia
Julia: I really like the giraffe too. And won't be adding another creature to our home. Thank you - I do hope this treat can finally go ahead.
DeleteI hope the coming week treats you well, EC...bringing with it many smiles and kind gestures.
ReplyDeleteTake good care....cuddles to Jazz. :)
Lee: Thank you. I am glad to see you back on line and hope your internet/phone woes are sorted.
DeleteI love those murals, such wonderful talent everywhere, such true art.
ReplyDeleteAs to your med dread - all the best with that. I share it.
Are you visiting a kennel? Maybe walkies with the strays?
XO
WWW
Wisewebwoman: The murals really lift an otherwise ugly area don't they. I really appreciate them. Med dread is the perfect expression.
DeleteNo kennel, and no walkies with strays.
Those are wonderful murals. I especially like the three sleeping critters in bed (kitties?). And no idea about your treat, other than you deserve it for sure! :-)
ReplyDeleteDJan: I saw small birds in the beds, but loved the concept. And thank you. Treats are always welcome.
DeleteThe murals are much better that plain concrete walls. "I got some very strange looks..." WELL?! What were you doing enjoying yourself?! You should know better!
ReplyDeleteMike: I cared not a jot for the strange looks, and am glad that I made the time. I hope I never learn better on that front.
DeleteJust coming to think of what a mural showing your treat could look like. Fire ... barking ... hm ... a wood burning fireplace?
ReplyDeleteSean Jeating: You are way off. Fire has no part in my treat - and indeed our fires early in the year meant it wasn't possible. Watch this space. I would applaud a mural devoted to the treat though.
DeleteHa, now I am the more curious.
DeleteWhatever it is: Enjoy!
Sean Jeating: Thank you. I hope to. I expect to.
DeleteEnjoyed all these murals. I hope you're having a great weekend,
ReplyDeleteRasmaSandra: I am glad. I hope your weekend is great too.
DeleteHow strange that people thought you were odd for taking photos of the murals. I expect some people never notice them.
ReplyDeleteThe 'I wonder' writing seems obvious and associated with the murals but also cryptic in some manner.
Andrew: I expect people thought I was odd just because they never notice them. And yes, I could see a cryptic element to the I wonders as well.
DeleteSo glad you had fun taking the murals' photos! Much nicer and more interesting than blank greyness - or even worse, graffiti. I like the giraffe, and the moon with the pink-shod figure kicking the woman into orbit. It looks like a good idea for a story...
ReplyDeleteYou have us all mystified with your treat - could you be visiting seals, or monkeys perhaps?? I hope you have a lovely time, whatever it is!
Alexia: I really, really don't like underground car parks and given my druthers would never go into one. The murals go some way to improving the experience. I hadn't thought of barking seals until some of you reminded me. I expect I will have a lovely time and that my smile will split my face.
DeleteI'm probably barking up the wrong tree, but I hope you're going to that overnight zoo, where the lions are outside your patio window? Just hoping for some fun thing like that.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: I would love to go back to Jamala. Sadly not this time. I WILL have fun though.
DeleteBarking but not dogs. Seals? Sea lions? At the zoo? What a wonderful treat. I hope all your medicals and other appointments go well. I love almost all the murals.
ReplyDeleteRiver: I like most of the murals too. I also hope the medical appointments go well. A couple are fairly scary.
DeleteThe murals are wonderful to see and rather nice.
ReplyDeleteHope you get on ok with your appointments.
Margaret D: They are fun aren't they? And thank you re the appointments.
DeleteWell, I know what the treat is so I shant spoil the guessing. And LOVE the arty car park. Canberra rocks! I have a cushion cover with a hipster girraffe on it.
ReplyDeletedinahmow: Woof. Canberra is a great deal more than the politicians isn't it? And a great deal better too.
DeleteI often like murals. I detest graffiti, but murals can be nice. I think most of these were good. Thanks for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteBill: No arguments from me. Mind you one of our politicians a few years ago diligently cleaned 'graffiti' from a wall, and called the local paper so they could get a photo of his hard work. The graffiti he scrubbed so diligently was a commissioned artwork.
DeleteBrilliant summary - don't love all of them, but love that they are there. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDrgaonquillca: I feel that way about all public art and indeed art generally. I don't like all of it, I don't understand all of it, but DO love that it is there. I firmly believe that we need art. In all of its genres.
DeleteAn interesting collection of murals and like you some I like, some i don't like. Now Barking - no dogs - you may be be barking up the wrong tree - on a path you did not mean to go down - intriguing! HAve a good week
ReplyDeleteMargaret Birding For Pleasure. This is a path I am very, very glad to be going down. And one I have been anticipating for months.
DeleteOh how I love these stunning murals...these artists are SO talented. I would love to be able to paint like that!😊😊
ReplyDeleteIt is always such a treat to visit here, your beautiful photos always brighten up my day.
Very best of luck with your appointments, please do let me know how they go? I had mine this week...and now need some recovery time! Lol
I cannot guess...barking, but not dogs? Umm...I can only think seals?
I am so intrigued...😉
Have a lovely day.
Lots of love and hugs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ygraine: Thank you. I am glad that your appointments are over for the moment and hope that you DO get that much needed recovery time. As usual you are underestimating yourself. You are assuredly an artist but your medium is words rather than pigments.
DeleteStay well, stay safe. Much love.
Hi EC - love that range of murals ... especially the 'I wonder ...' ones - lots of thoughts there. I wonder !!! ... if your 'the bark' ... is do with wood-engraving ... or the arboretum with its various tree barks ...
ReplyDeleteTake care and stay safe ... and all the best this coming week - with those various tests ... lots of thoughts there ... Hilary
Hilary Melton-Butcher: Isn't it wonderful to have art to brighten up a functional (but ugly) area. I like the 'I wonder' ones too.
DeleteYou stay safe too please. I hope your renewed lockdown is successful and can be lifted soon.
Thanks for sharing the murals, Sue. Any way at all to enliven dull, featureless urban spaces is a welcomed by me and I have to say that Australia really seems to have embraced the concept of adding murals in its cities.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: I am endlessly grateful that my city/country has embraced art. Urban spaces are never my favourites and the art helps. A lot.
DeleteI love how Australians embrace art and display it proudly everywhere. A mall is a great place to add colour and interest. I especially like the child’s comments.
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: The children's comments were a wonderful addition weren't they?
DeleteThese murals are absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteNatalia: Aren't they great?
DeleteWhat a great idea to provide murals in malls. A wonderful way to enjoy art and very motivational. Looking forward to finding out about your treat, and hope all goes well with your appointments. Sending hugs, RO
ReplyDeleteRO: Not only in the mall, but in the very ugly parking lot as well. I am impressed that someone had the idea and was encouraged to pursue it. And thank you. Stay well.
DeleteI do like murals. It says a lot about the thoughts of the artist who painted them. Of course, I like best the one with the child reaching for the macaw. ;)
ReplyDeleteJ C: I liked that one too - but hope that the macaw escapes the child's grasp...
DeleteHow fun! My week ahead is going to be scrambling to sort, pack and purge the remaining items in the house. A week from today I will be squeezing all I can into a UHaul trailer and the truck and deciding what stays behind in storage. Nervous anticipation for the drive that will be on Monday. Praying for clear weather through the UP.
ReplyDeleteCindi: You will be very, very busy indeed. I hope that your excitement is bigger than the fears and regrets which will also be there. Good luck on the start of yet another journey and adventure. Safe travels to you and your furry buddies.
DeleteYour photos are always a treat for me.
ReplyDeleteI like the murals. I can't imagine painting something so big. Thank you for enduring the gaze of curious people in order to give us a nice view of art.
Myrna R.: Painting is something I always marvel at - regardless of the size. I have very little pride and felt no shame at all in wandering through the car park with camera in hand...
DeleteI am actually quite good at painting walls. With a base layer so an actual artist could paint something interesting over it. Good luck with the medical stuff!
ReplyDeletejono: Thank you. I even struggle at applying a base coat evenly, let alone the next steps.
DeleteWhat a great idea: murals in a parking garage. It doesn't even matter if they good or not, as long as they are there.
ReplyDeleteOlga Godim: It is lovely to see you here and I hope it means that your health is improving. Given your artistic talents I would love to see what sort of mural you would create to enliven the parking lot.
DeleteOh I like your murals too, and even more I like the fact that they are there. Malls are all alike. I sometimes think that if you find the right door, you could teleport from one mall to the next and get out in some foreign city.
ReplyDeleteHoping the very best for your medical thingies and hoping to hear more of your intriguing treat.
PS thank you for standing up to strange looks in order to treat us with photos.
Charlotte (MotherOwl): You are so right about malls. They are all pretty much the same and not places I spend much time in willingly. And thank you.
DeleteChocolate bark?(a candy here) Love the murals
ReplyDeleteSue in Italia/In the Land of Cancer: Nope. Not chocolate. I am glad that I finally remembered to take photos of the murals. I have been meaning to do so for quite some time.
DeleteLove the murals. What a great way to brighten up an area. Hope all goes well with the medical issues. Looking forward to finding out what your treat is. Take care and stay safe my friend.
ReplyDeleteMason Canyon: A great way to brighten up an ugly area. Charlotte (MotherOwl) mentioned that all malls are the same - which is equally true of parking areas. You stay safe too please.
DeleteI love the one of the giraffe the most. Waiting to see what treat you are referring to. Lol.
ReplyDeletegigi-hawaii: The giraffe is lovely isn't it? Every time I see them (or think of them) I am blown away by the fact that they have the same number of bones in their neck as we do.
DeleteBuena colección de Murales, los encuentro muy interesantes.
ReplyDeletepor quedarme con alguno, me ha encantado la del niño con el brazo levantado, queriendo alcanzar las aves que se ven volando.
VENTANA DE FOTO: They are fun aren't they? I liked that one too.
DeleteI have no idea what your treat is but it sounds fun. I love the murals.
ReplyDeleteMary Kirkland: I hope my long awaited treat will be fun - and I am glad that you liked the murals. Thank you for stopping by at this difficult time. Hugs.
DeleteI wish the cake and bike quotes had reversed the "mum" and "dad" to avoid stereotypes, but apart from that they are amazing. And I'm sure the artists are delighted you took photos of their work.
ReplyDeleteLL Cool Joe: I agree with you about stereotypes. While my city celebrates/promotes public art many of the artists go unindentified on murals. Which I think is wrong. I hope they do know that their work is appreciated.
DeleteSue, those murals are quirky and delightful. Certainly brighten up dull cement. Thanks for sharing them and yes, I can just see the looks as you wielded your camera.
ReplyDeleteWishing you well for your medical appointments.
No idea what barks other than dogs...?
Denise Covey: Thank you. They weren't the first time I have been given strange looks - not the last.
DeleteI had forgotten but several of my readers reminded me that seals bark. Though not for me on Wednesday.
Could it be sea lions or eared seal show perhaps jumping through fire? Don't laugh but my first reaction of "which fires and barks" brought a shooting gun equipped with dog barking sounds to mind! Silly right! Or my next fiction chapter. Your artsy stroll for us was wonderful, hope to see more. As for the sweet little notes along the way making a cake with mum is absolutely going to be delicious!
ReplyDelete21 Wits: No seals or sea-lions (though either would be a treat). Is it greedy of me to hope that you share your next fiction chapter? Greedy or not, I do (which is a hint).
DeleteIt's a virtual and real sign of character that your city has so many evocative murals. Who wants to look at concrete?
ReplyDeletePS YIPPEEEEEE! WE DID IT. It's a in for the world.
Love ya, EC.
Go gently.
Rawknrobyn: I know you did it - and I am still smiling broadly - though worried about what the incumbent will do until inauguration day. Nothing good.
DeleteLook after yourself dear friend.
Wonderful that they have done this as a way to bring art to what can be a very drab place.
ReplyDeleteMy selections are over here.
messymimi: Thank you for joining us again. I love your selections. And yes, car parks are usually drab - and often ugly too.
DeleteNifty idea to add art to an otherwise overlooked space like a car park. So much potential to add beauty and positive energy to life everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI'm thoroughly intrigued by the barking treat :) Wishing you a tranquil and enjoyable week.
Nilanjana Bose: This beauty addict is VERY glad to see colour added to car parks. And indeed everywhere. You are so right about the positive energy.
DeleteI hope that my barking treat will be revealed next week. And that I succeed in taking photos of it.
Oh how interesting!!! I can't wait to hear about your treat!! Those murals are so cool, I love the one with the three birds in bed!!
ReplyDeleteRain: The baby birds in the bed are cute aren't they? I have to admit that I hadn't really taken them in before I walked the length of the car park with my camera in hand.
Delete❤️
ReplyDeleteR's Rue: Thank you.
DeleteThose murals are terrific. They make an otherwise drab area come alive.
ReplyDeleteKaren: They do. They bring an otherwise dull and ugly area to life.
DeleteAt least they are making an effort with the murals.
ReplyDeleteHena Tayeb: I appreciate their colourful efforts. A lot.
DeleteThe murals are definitely interesting. Some are more my taste than others- but nice to look at art and get your brain thinking.
ReplyDeleteHmm- I am curious about the barking. Maybe some place with seals? Or Barking Owls? Or- maybe koalas (I am not sure if their sound would be called a bark or not). Or maybe a wooded area with a lot of tree bark?
Have a great week!
~Jess
DMS ~Jess: I like some of the murals more than others too - but welcome them all.
DeleteKoalas are grunters and squealers rather than barkers. Which always surprises me.
As usual, I enjoyed the walk with with you and seeing all the murals. I like to see creative ways to brighten or liven up places. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us.
ReplyDeleteGlenda Beall: I am thrilled to see a drab, utilitarian area brightened with the murals. And hope that tomorrow's treat does go ahead. It has been cancelled more than once before.
DeleteI enjoyed your many murals - I can't imagine who would prefer plain walls to all that colour and talent. Not me.
ReplyDeleteAs for getting funny looks, I too have learned to ignore other people. Life's too short.
Wishing you well with your appointments. And I am VERY curious about your treat, and look forward to finding out what it is :)
jenny_o: I can mostly ignore other people. Mostly, but not always. I agree with you about the colour too. I firmly believe that we all NEED beauty and fun. Hopefully I will have both in abundance tomorrow.
DeleteInteresting and artistic murals. Murals are also getting popular here as a means to attract tourists to the smaller towns. I like the ones with words, makes me wonder if the painter really means what he/she said!!
ReplyDeletekestrel: I really like murals and am very glad that they have become 'fashionable'. Art is such a subjective area isn't it? I don't like all of these - but love that they are there.
Deleteoh I especially like the child looking up at the bird. I wonder why that artwork resonates so strongly!
ReplyDeleteKim: Of course that one resonated with you. How could it not?
DeleteHow odd that they thought you photographing the murals was weird. I love murals. These are great.
ReplyDeleteShannon Lawrence: I suspect that they no longer 'see' the murals and wondered at the weirdo taking photos in the car park. Their loss.
DeleteThe giraffe mural seems to be looking at me :).
ReplyDeleteThe artwork looks almost the same as the giraffe's physical form.
Cheers.
Himawan Sant: The giraffe was looking at us, wasn't he? Have a good day.
DeletePretty murals❤
ReplyDeleteKinga K.: They are aren't they?
DeleteI've never met a mural I didn't like:) Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat comes to mind is gun, but I don't see that as being the answer.
Sandra Cox: You are right. A gun is not the answer. Murals on the other hand are always a treat.
DeleteI love when artists help to brighten up our spaces!
ReplyDeleteJemi Fraser: I do too and am endlessly grateful to them - whatever their genre.
DeleteI like some more than others. But, as you say, it is nice they are there.
ReplyDeleteHe/she/it barks but is not a dog.... a coyote barks. .. nah...
:)
Caterina: Me too - and no, not a coyote.
DeleteHow nice. I think I like them all. I wish all of our grey concrete underground spaces had them.
ReplyDeleteAndrew R. Scott: I am glad that some of ours do. I have just been trying to comment on your latest post - but blessed blogger is flatly refusing to let me. I will try again later.
DeleteBeautiful mural painting.
ReplyDeleteLooks like this is a mural painting in the mall parking lot, right?
With mural paintings that make the parking lot feel a little cheerful
Have a great day
Regards
JustCherry: It is indeed a series of mural in the parking lot - and I think they are a definite improvement. My day is drawing to a close now but was wonderful. I hope yours is as good.
DeleteI did enjoy seeing this mix of murals, thank you.
ReplyDeleteHoping all your medical appointments go well.
Enjoy your Wednesday afternoon treat :)
My good wishes.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. More medical appointments next week, but the treat was WONDERFUL. Stay well, stay safe.
DeleteGreat paintings
ReplyDeleteSteve: Thank you.
DeleteThese murals are fantastic - they should see the light of day and not "live" in an underground parking garage. I do love the giraffe with her inquisitive look best, but I also like the other ones. Some are a bit sinister like the one with the three beds and the guy outside the window. First I had to think of Goldilocks, but after enlarging the picture I think I was wrong. Thank you for this post.
ReplyDeleteCarola Bartz: I find some of the murals discomforting but like you love the giraffe. I am glad to see the underground parking area decorated too. My claustrophic self has troubles with it, and the colour and the art helps.
DeleteThose murals are just wonderful! That giraffe - gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLady Fi: The giraffe is special isn't it? Quite a lot of us commented on it. And I smile each time I see it.
DeleteThese murals are so amazing. I love them all.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week and take care.
orvokki: Thank you - though I think that the murals you have been showing us are MUCH more impressive.
DeleteThese are amazing EC!!! WOW! I really love them all! Why were people looking at you strangely?? Keep being you! I love you!!! I hope your health is ok!! Big Hugs!
ReplyDeleteMagic Love Crow: I think I was getting the weird looks because I was wandering around an underground parking lot with my camera. If they didn't see the beauty it was their loss. Thank you (as always) for trawling through my posts.
Delete
