Sunday Selections #209

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life.  The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.  Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

Like River I usually run with a theme.  I have often shown you the birds and the cats (real and ornamental) which decorate/clutter our home.  Today I am focusing on the fish.  Or some of them.  There is a large fish tank in the living room (and goodness it is a bugger to clean) and rather a lot of other fish around, both inside and out.

First the real fish.  Fortunately neither Jazz nor Jewel show any interest in them, though Jazz loves to warm his belly on the light on the top of the tank.

Then some of the other fish around the place.

And for Dana, a frog.

  1. You have a lot of fish images and real fish in a tank, I didn't know. Isn't it hard to clean and keep tank fish? I like the painted rock, is it, fish. And the framed fish art above it.

    1. Strayer: Cleaning the fish tank is a vile job. Sadly fish are also prone to disgusting diseases. Funghi and fin rot sort of diseases. A lot of work, but sometimes worth it. And they are calming.
The painted fish is wood - a very soft wood.

  2. I love the fish collections! And having real fish tops it all off. You need one of those gigantic tanks filled with fish.

    1. Stephanie Faris: Only if I could have someone to clean the gigantic tank. The one we have is four feet long, and a thorough clean can take most of a day.

    2. Do you have catfish and snails in there? They help to clean the sides and bottom a bit. We had a few snails in ours, 1993 I think, and the little buggers reproduced like crazy. Dozens of pin head sized snails!

    3. River: We do indeed have catfish - several types, and usually snails. There have been deaths and an algae outbreak.

  7. There's something fishing going on here!!!

Years ago I had a fish tank and one of my fish took control of the tank and got rid of the rest of his neighbours...I had him for a few years...I called him "Armadeus"...and he'd greet me every time I arrived home from work. (by swimming up to the side of the tank...not by saying "Welcome home!")!!!!

Have a great week, EC...I hope the Small Portion is feeling much better. Cuddles to the two Js. :)

    1. Lee: We have had fish like that too. Fish who eat everyone invited into their tank.
The skinny one is still not well. He has, however agreed to see the doctor if he isn't much, much better today. Hopefully when he wakes he will remember that promise (which I intend to hold him to).

  10. I'm with Dana. I love frogs (ornamental, not real ones). Years ago I used to have a fish tank. As the fish got bigger, they would start cannibalizing the others. I gave up. A salt water tank would be my dream...as long as someone else came in to maintain it! I'm surprised the cats don't like to watch them. Mine would try very hard to go fishing. Of course, Jazz makes enough of his own mischief to compensate for his lack of fish obsession...

    ReplyDelete

    1. River Fairchild: We too have had cannibal fish, and fisher cats. And himself would LOVE a marine tank. I am with you, I would like one, but would loathe the maintenance.

  12. Lovely fishy stuff. Did you make the embroidered ones? I love the long narrow one with all of the different fish on it.

We had fish tanks when our kids were young - guess who did all of the cleaning...
I agree about their calming effects, though.

The fish tank belongs to the smaller portion. Sadly cleaning it seems to be in my job description. They are calming, except for when the cleaning rears its ugly head.

  15. Fish!
    Fish are so delightful!
You have beautiful real wee fishies and a fantastic collection of decorative fish.
I wonder if the sight of a big, black, furry predator belly up above causes consternation among them ;)
But, I imagine they're well used to Jazz by now.

Even though the tank is a lot of work, I think the visual serenity is worth it. I "disappear" into another world, when watching fish...

You'd like the ceramic fish I make - they're jointed, so the body and tails swing.
Some of my fish now reside in various QLD beach cottages, in Manly, NSW and seaside Victoria. Makes me feel humbly proud - there's an oxymoron :D

We had gorgeous goldfish - comets - in our large pond in W.A. I loved hopping in barefoot and puttering about, cleaning the edges, fountain and filter as our large (some well over 20cm) golden-orange beauties played hide and seek in and around my legs. They were very friendly.
Even when Jack barked into the water at them, they would come up to investigate the "sonic boom" from his bark. He never bit at the water, only watched curiously as they swam lazily around.
I miss my fishies so much!
One day, I'd love a pond again...
Thank you for this post EC, it took me down a watery memory lane.

I hope and wish that your dear is SP is well.
Wishing you both a wonderful week.

    1. Vicki: Your ceramic fish sound incredible. You are right, I am certain that we would like/love them. A blog post about them? Hint, hint.
The fish aren't fazed by Jazz, probably because of his total disinterest in them. A notable fishercat we had caused them to dive any time she approached the tank. Disproving comprehensively the theory that fish have only a three second memory.
We had a pond with fish when I was a child. Birds treated it as a buffet, and my mother's cat used to put presents from the pond for her on the front door mat...

  32. So many fish! So colorful! I love the fish the sun shines through. I bet they cast some pretty color spots around the room. We have a 45 gallon taank. Some of the fish are on the old side and we lost a couple since Christmas. I think these fish have lasted longer then any we have ever had. A nice mixture and everyone seems to get along. As most are getting long in the tooth we expect some more to die off. Funny how a person can get attach to a FISH! But when our yoyo loach died I really missed him. He started out about 3/4 inch long and was about 5 inches long when he died. Have a great day. Flu here today, so laying low. I hope the SP goes in for a check-up. Hugs, Teresa
