Sunday Selections #413

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life.  The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.  River is taking a well-earned self care break.  She will be missed, but I will keep the meme warm for her.

Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

Like River I usually run with a theme.  I mentionedwhinged last week that it has been hot.  That heat has continued.  Since the week before Christmas our daily maximums have all been over 30C and most have been well over 35C.  Bleah.

The birds have also been suffering.

Seeing them with their wings held away from their bodies, and panting distresses me.  We put out water (though I have only seen the pigeons drink it) and apples for the moisture. Some of them revel in the sprinkler in the times we are able to turn them on.
Jazz has suffered as well.  Hopefully by the time this post goes up the heat-wave which has been hitting much of Eastern Australia has broken.  Thankfully, late yesterday afternoon we got some relief.  And some very welcome rain.

The sunsets have been hot too.  As I took these photos it was still over 34C (94F).

These next shots (taken not long after dawn) look cool - but they lie.  It was already hot, and got hotter.  I liked the clouds just the same.

Apart from dragging hoses/sprinklers around the garden has pretty much been left to its own devices.  It doesn't seem to mind for which I am grateful.  The weeds are thriving of course.

  2. Can you believe that we are almost at the end of our first week in 2019!

You've shared some beautiful photographs with us, your flowers look so colourful.

Here's to some welcome rain and cooler days, and I hope the week ahead may cool down a little for you.

    All the best Jan

  5. Those kinds of temperatures day after day must be debilitating. And you haven't even got to mid summer yet! Thanks for taking care of the birds. Seeing Corellas and Galahs took me right back to my recent visit. I will have to be sure never to visit at this time of the year.

  10. Chirpy! Chirpy! Cheep! Cheep! My maggies woke me up this morning....they were having a very noisy conversation at my glass sliding and screen door.

I empathise with the birds and Jazz...I know exactly how they feel. Each day, particularly from late morning forth I feel like I'm going to expire. Since the the trees were lopped down...taking every bit of shading from the roof off this cabin - from this it has been hell!

Any drought can be blamed on me...I'm drinking gallons of water!

Don't concern yourself re the weeds. I give no apology for being a sloth...and I shall continue being one until winter arrives.

I hope your week is a better one, EC....stay cool...nothing is worth doing during the heat...other than trying to stay cool...that's what I believe and I'm sticking to it. (I'm sticking to everything!!) Cuddles to Jazz...from me - and from my two who empathise as well. :)

  11. Poor birds! Those four sunset shots are gorgeous, but even they look hot to me. I do sympathise - it's hard to get up any enthusiasm for housework, let alone gardening, in the heat. We don't have water restrictions as yet, but they are sure to happen soon.
I hope the cooling effect of the rain lasts for a few days, at least.

    1. Alexia: Our water restrictions were made permanent a few years ago. They can be tightened, but some level of restriction remains even when we do get rain. Which is fine. Water is such a precious resource.

  18. I love the lily pictures but lilies are my favorite flowers. The birds are beautiful also. The other day we had a huge rain that brought extremely temperate winter days. The pool cover is on but there was so much water from the rain that a large puddle had formed in the middle of the cover. I counted 27 birds at one time around its edge trying to take a little bath. Purple finches, wild canaries, goldfinches, cardinals, wrens, sparrows, titmouse, and bluebirds. The bluebirds are beautiful but they are such little bullies.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anne in the kitchen: Just at the moment you would enjoy the garden. There are lots of lilies in flower (front and back gardens). I am very familiar with beautiful bullies. The rainbow lorikeets fit that category. They are smaller than a lot of our birds but don't let that stop them. I would have loved to have seen your bird bath at work.

I watered for an hour this morning and was disappointed to find the water had only soaked in a couple of centimetres, so I'll water again tomorrow for longer. Even my succulents have suffered a bit as it has been too hot for me to stand out there with a hose.

  62. I'm completely silly for not realizing the birds would also be so hot and do hope the weather has broken since you posted.

And, isn't is soooo annoying that weeds can handle anything! Annoying things!!

    1. mark koopmans: Weeds rule. Sadly. And yes, the birds were hot. The heat has been gone for a couple of days, but will return on the weekend. The birds will deal with it a great deal more stoically than I will.

  63. Beautiful birds! Your photos make me smile with joy. I am sorry you are dealing with so much hot weather. We will have a cold spell coming in tonight, down in the thirties, I think. I don't mind the cold. Like it much better than heat. Stay cool if you can.

    1. Glenda Council Beall: I agree with you about the hot/cold preference. I find it much easier to get warm (and stay that way) than I do to cool down. And thank you for your kind words about my photos.

  64. Aw, the poor birds. I feel sad for them but I'm so glad you're putting out water and apples for them. They're so gorgeous!

    1. Sandra Cox: And their clothes always fit too. Still cooler here today (though that will change tomorrow). And the birds, the cat and I are happy. The birds and the cat are beautiful too.

  66. My corollas! Poor birds! That is one heck of a heat wave.

This past summer we had to mist our roses and plants, while covering them with shade cloth. We live in a desert climate and it was 104 F. (39? C). Crispy plants.

    1. Susan Kane: It was a doozy. And will return this weekend. Including some days at the 39/40+C mark. I am all too familiar with crispy plants. I go soggy rather than crispy though.

  67. Poor birds, they do look hot! I assume at those temps you have a/c in the house?

    Weeds always thrive!

    1. LL Cool Joe: Evaporative cooling rather than air conditioning. I like to be able to open doors and windows. And yes, weeds do indeed thrive. It is part of their duty statement.

  68. UGH! I sure hope the heat wave has given you (and those poor birds) some relief by now. That kind of heat is just miserable. When I went out to pick up the newspaper this morning, it was nice and brisk, with a light frost on everything. It felt great! I never thought I'd get to an age where I prefer cold weather over hot, but... here I am. Happy New Year!

    1. Susan: It is miserable. We had a few days respite but from today it is ramping up again. A light frost sounds like bliss.

  69. Too hot! I don't like those temperatures anymore.
Comparing... I think today was beautiful here. Sunny and -9 C. As long as there is sun, I am happy!

    1. Caterina: Much too hot. Sunny but chilly days are lovely aren't they? And I would be very happy in those conditions.

    1. Sandra Cox: Today will be ok(ish). The next week/ten days will not. I will hunker down inside as much as possible (with the exception of Thursday when I will have to go into town for my voluntary work). This too will pass.
