Words For Wednesday: 30/12/2020

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Computer issues led her to bow out for a while.  The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...  We can use some or all of the prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

The prompts will be here this month and I am providing them.

This week's prompts are a mixture, feel free to use any or all of them:

Firstly Steve suggested that I include the word Diverse next year as a prompt next year.  I said that I was happy to do so, but having realised how long it will be before I provide the prompts again I thought I would include it now.

  1. Diverse
  2. Universe
  3. Reverse
  4. Terse
  5. Nurse
  6. Rehearse

And/or

Have fun.  Next month Charlotte (MotherOwl) will be providing the prompts.

Happy and healthy New Year to everyone.

  1. I am happy to live in a DIVERSE world. Diversity is the spice of life after all. It would be a very boring place if everyone was just like me – or like you for that matter. Some may NURSE their grievances against those who look different, but often such sentiments are engendered by suspicion, a lack of understanding, or diminished economic circumstances, and not by inherent resentment. We may have to NURSE people along a little, and that is not always easy, nor pleasant, and sometimes it is sufficient to accept that it is enough if we can prevent them from going in REVERSE. It seems to me that we should all REHEARSE for a UNIVERSE that is brown, where everyone has a relative of one race or another, and then it will be hard demonstrate blind prejudice. I mentioned this to a fellow the other day, who was griping about “them”, and he got a little TERSE, but I think he got the point.
Just look at that sunset! Surely that is what makes the point. We all live on the same blue dot, we all enjoy the same glorious sunset. Can’t we can all just get along?

Too late to Rehearse, the Nurse Reverses the turn, nothing can be done for the wonderfully Diverse Universe, but nature challenges humanity, we await the terse outcome.

  3. Rachel watched and waited as the sun started to (finally) blaze over the horizon. As a nurse she hoped (fervently) that the dark days were in reverse.
She was tired, tired to the bone and beyond. For months now a diverse range of people had demanded her care. Young, old, people of colour, men, women... They all needed her. And badly. She and her colleagues struggled to meet the demand. No time to rehearse, this was the real deal. The very demanding real deal.
Her new year’s resolution for the world was terse but heartfelt.
Make things better – and at the very least no worse.. Our place in the universe may depend on this...

    9. Well done, Sue. Yes, there was no time to rehearse. As things get worse in the US, there are specs of light and hope. Our health system and those who spend their long days caring for the sick and dying (while others go golfing) are stretched beyond reason, but they hold on and return each day. The word hero is not a big enough word to describe them.

      Delete
    10. Starting Over, Accepting Changes - Maybe: You are right. Hero is not a big enough word. And it applies to so many essential workers who just keep going - too often at the cost of their lives.

  7. -DIVERSE underpins diversity which recognizes that, though people have things in common with each other, they are also different in many ways.

    - I'm sure the UNIVERSE is full of intelligent life. It's just been too intelligent to come here.

    - To be a philosopher, just REVERSE everything you have ever been told and have a sense of humor doing it.

    - But with the true poet, everything is TERSE, touching, or brilliant.

    - To do what nobody else will do, in a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through, that is what it is to be a NURSE.

    - You can survive tough situations and even turn them to your advantage by acting as if you are the person you want to be. When you act like that person, you can become that person. The hard parts are deciding whom you want to become, being willing to REHEARSE until you become that person, and forgiving yourself until you do.

I wish you and everyone a memorable Happy New Year.
