Words for Wednesday 1/11/2023

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Computer issues led her to bow out for a while.  The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...  We can use some or all of the prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

Huge thanks to  Sean Jeating for providing the prompts last month. The prompts will be here again this month and are provided by  Alex J. Cavanaugh

This week's prompts are:

  • Saturn
  • Orange
  • Festival
  • Wind
  • Spicy
  • Flustered

And/or

  • Horror
  • Neon
  • Giant
  • Fight
  • Perfect
  • Flying

Charlotte (MotherOwl)  has given us Mint Green as the colour of the month.  If you can also incorporate it into your stories she (and I) will be grateful.

Have fun.

In related news.  This year is rapidly drawing to a close and I am seeking people who are happy to provide the prompts (either here or on your own blog) next year.  If you are able to do so, please let me know in the comments, stating which month suits and whether you will post here or on your own blog.  I hope to be able to post next year's schedule some time next month.

  1. Remembering learning at school that Saturn was a gas giant Rosie privately christened their new boss Derek Barnes with the name of the planet. She had to fight with herself not to tell her co-workers. She lost. It was just the perfect name for him and they agreed.
When he broke wind there were certainly Saturn like rings around him. Exclusionary zones. She wouldn’t be surprised at all if the air changed colour. Orange perhaps or a nasty brownish yellow.
Everyone had experienced the horror of being shut in his office desperately trying to find an excuse to leave. Quickly. Saturn’s gases were apparently noble, like helium or neon. Derek’s were definitely ignoble. He wasn’t flustered though and said ‘better out than in’ and blithely continued on his windy way.
Days where he ate a spicy lunch were the worst. People were flying when they left his office and their faces were a sickly grey green.
Fridays, when he worked in the city office were a positive festival of clean air, fresh mint green air. Just one more reason to LOVE the end of the week.

  3. Hi EC and Alex ...

First - the second lot!: The horror of that perfect night returned … where did that flying neon giant appear from … perhaps a mint green julep would help steady her nerves.

    Second - the first lot:
Saturn is not the red planet, nor is it orange … yet the festival lights, including those mint green ones, blew in the wind … the aroma of spicy candy floss … tempted the flustered clown – but those Circus lights would be up and finished soon.

  7. The new moon sky gave Saturn an opportunity to shine its best. My spicy pumpkin latte looked almost orange as the lights of the festival grounds came into view. Suddenly a gust of wind tore the cup from my hand. Flustered by the wet result, I turned around for home.

    1. Marie Smith: Your poor protagonist. Given the winds we have had this week I would have headed home too - but I hope she can still see Saturn through the window.

  10. The HORROR in that NEON sign, it’s like a GIANT coming to FIGHT me in my PERFECT sleep that I was having. Wake up, wake up!
I’d better hop on my broom and go FLYING far from here before that dreadful thing devours me!

Haven't worked out what horror was in that neon sign..sigh!

  12. Continuing the story of Edward and Dahlia. And yes, EC, I will fill in with prompts on here during 2024. All prompts used as usual.
    _________________________________________________________
    Dear Edward,
Thank you for the latest email. I do hope your meeting goes well.
I am exhibiting at the Saturn festival in San Francisco. My couple of rather giant paintings depict neon orange and mint green moons flying through a perfect sky. I am enclosing a photo, I am sure you will detect the images behind the calm sky - the horror of war and fighting.
On a lighter note, I am eating a spicy moroccan dish as I write, my flustered server has told me the wind is picking up outside. A storm no doubt. But I am determined to finish this excellent meal.
    Please stay in touch.
    Yours,
    Dahlia.

  13. Am I getting to that age where waves of nostalgia wash over me? Perhaps. Just the other day I was thinking about my old SATURN, my second car with the shiny hubcaps and faux woodgrain upholstery that looked more like ORANGE peel. Every girl I ever took out in it viewed the interior with HORROR, but when we were FLYING along in the WIND, they quickly forgot their initial reticence and thought the car was quite PERFECT. After all, I was one of the few guys with a set of wheels, and that kind of asset can substitute for good looks in a hurry, that you will surely GRANT me. Whenever I had a FIGHT with one of the girls it mattered little that she left the car huffy and FLUSTERED; there was always another to take her place. Call me shallow if you will, but label them shallower. I was at the local pumpkin FESTIVAL just the other day having a cup of SPICY pumpkin cider when I noticed one of my old flames bathed in the NEON sign of the “bob for apples” booth, two kids and a husband in tow. If only he knew what took place on the orange upholstery of that old car! I’ll never tell and I’m quite sure she won’t either.

  16. Remember back in the 80s when you drove the old orange saturn to the music festival? And when we got there, the wind was so strong it blew your paper plate out of your hands and plastered it against your mint green shirt, leaving a trail of spicy red sauce down the front of it. You were so flustered. I really tried not to laugh.
