Sunday Selections #806

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Sorry I still haven't succeeded in working out how to do a blog hop. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme.  It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Starting off Yarralumla, a suburb in my city.  In recent years they have developed the I think charming habit of tying red bows around trees in the very leafy suburb.  It is titled 'Yarralumla does Christmas'.

These last two trees are outside where my parents house stood before it was replaced with a McMansion.  Decades ago I spent many happy hours in those trees with an apple and a book.

Of course while we were in the area I demanded a roo fix.

Closer to home there are also decorations.  An early morning walk (just after 7) made me smile.

Santa and Rudolph are obviously not early morning risers.

And the Christmas gnomes are back.  The householder was watering his garden when I went past (it is going to be hot again) and I was pleased to tell him how much I like his decorations.  As I suspected the initials on the gnomes are for family members.  He told me that they were fading a bit - to which I could only reply 'Aren't we all'.

The last photo in yet another photo heavy post is not Christmassy at all but I loved it.

The Guard Chickens were in hiding though.  I hope you find things to make you smile this coming week.

I usually run with a theme. This time of year is packed with celebrations, religious, cultural, spiritual.  On a cultural basis at least (though I am less certain about its religious commitment) Australia celebrates Christmas, but it happy to share the space with other traditions/cultures.

This week I am sharing some of the decorations I have seen out and about.

Starting close to home.

I particularly like the next house's Christmas gnomes.  I think they are charming and I was very pleased to see them go up again this year.  Their hats are fading but they are still a delight.

The suburb in which I grew up and which we drive through when I want/need a kangaroo fix has a tradition of tying a red bow around the street trees.  It is surprisingly effective and lovely.

This is outside my mother's old home - now bulldozed and McMansioned.

The roadside ducks are back - with a little Christmas bling.

And yes, I did get my roo fix.

Whatever you celebrate or don't I hope that the day, the season, the year(s) to come bring you tidings of comfort and joy.  A wish I particularly hold for those who feel they have little or nothing to celebrate.

Sunday Selections #613

I usually run with a theme. When this post goes live it will be Christmas Day here in Australia.  Early, but definitely Christmas Day.  So last week we went to the suburb in which I grew up, and took photos of how 'Yarralumla Does Christmas'.  Most of the suburb is decorated this way, and I think it is charming.

It is also the suburb to which I go for a 'roo fix'.  There were none to be seen that day, but a pair of black swans delighted us.

The crimson rosella beside the road fitted the suburbs colour scheme well.

The ducks are here all year round, and always make me smile.

Not only is Christmas celebrated in December, a number of other religions observe special times, in addition to secular celebrations.  Whatever you celebrate or don't I hope that the day, and the year to come bring you 'tidings of comfort and joy'.  And I hope you will also spare a thought for the many people for whom this is a difficult and lonely time of year.
