Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. This time of year is packed with celebrations, religious, cultural, spiritual. On a cultural basis at least (though I am less certain about its religious commitment) Australia celebrates Christmas, but it happy to share the space with other traditions/cultures.
This week I am sharing some of the decorations I have seen out and about.
Starting close to home.
I particularly like the next house's Christmas gnomes. I think they are charming and I was very pleased to see them go up again this year. Their hats are fading but they are still a delight.
The suburb in which I grew up and which we drive through when I want/need a kangaroo fix has a tradition of tying a red bow around the street trees. It is surprisingly effective and lovely.
This is outside my mother's old home - now bulldozed and McMansioned.
The roadside ducks are back - with a little Christmas bling.
And yes, I did get my roo fix.
Whatever you celebrate or don't I hope that the day, the season, the year(s) to come bring you tidings of comfort and joy. A wish I particularly hold for those who feel they have little or nothing to celebrate.
The red bow adds a specific charm to the trees. There's probably some meaning behind this tradition.
ReplyDeleteDUTA: It is a very recent tradition and has only been in place for the last five or six years. I am not sure what meaning it has (other than to unify the suburb) but I love to see it.
DeleteTrees... hmmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteMike: As you well know I love them.
DeleteI hope the new year brings some wonderful surprises for you, EC. Take care!
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: Thank you - and to you and your family.
DeleteI did enjoy seeing all of these photographs, thank you.
ReplyDeleteI still have a couple of presents to wrap, but everything is just about ready now for Christmas!
Sending good wishes across the miles.
Happy Christmas, Happy Holidays and a peaceful New Year.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Like you I have some presents to wrap. And some cakes to 'water'. In a while I will start chopping fruit for fruit salad. Thank you for your wishes - which I reciprocate.
DeleteI like your Christmas trees, they are very cute.
ReplyDeleteHyvää Joulua!
orvokki
orvokki: Thank you. Happy Christmas.
DeleteI vote for the colorful red balls in the maple trees.
ReplyDelete"I did get my roo fix."
Please pat him on the head for me and tell him that I hope the surgery didn't leave him too sore.
Snowbrush: I liked those colourful baubles too. The same house has some inflatable decorations (which I like much less) which were tired and lying down when I went past. I wouldn't dream of patting the roo. I hope your surgery is healing well and that you are in much less pain. And regaining your mobility.
DeleteI thought he might be pretty docile after being neutered--my comment was meant to be humorous based upon the meaning of the word "fix," but I guess was too obscure.
DeleteSnowbrush: Sorry. I was slow. It is the female roos in that location that are 'fixed'. Many of them have been given a contraceptive shot, and wear collars to show that they have had it.
Delete"Many of them have been given a contraceptive shot, and wear collars to show that they have had it."
DeleteAs in much of the human world, the responsibility for birth control falls on the woman! I interpret contraceptive to mean that the females can mate but not bear young. Is that how you mean it?
Snowbrush: That is exactly how I mean it. And a big yes to the fertility of the women being the one that is deemed 'controllable'.
DeleteThank you for sharing some wonderful decorations!
ReplyDeleteGini and I wish you a very Merry Christmas!
Wally Jones: Huge thanks to you and Gini. I am sure that you will spend time admiring nature's decorations - which are far better than anything we create.
DeleteYour photos are a dream... and it's already the 24th for you... I'll watch another film, then it's time to go to bed and tomorrow morning the morning coffee and Christmas Eve atmosphere... many greetings to you in Australia . I wish you a Merry Christmas with all my heart. viola
ReplyDeletep.s. We got snow, very fresh - today - cheering because it looks so beautiful.
Hug
Barwizki: Thank you so much. It is indeed Christmas Eve and promises to be a wet one. No snow here. Sigh.
DeleteHi EC - your photos are always inspiring ... and yes - ready for Christmas or not ... a dash for me tomorrow - we have decorations here and there - some totally OTT ... enjoy some peace and quiet, as well as celebrations for what you wish for you and others ... with thoughts from up above!! Cheers H xoxo
ReplyDeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: Thank you. It is early afternoon on Christmas Eve here and I think that what is going to be done before Christmas has been. Famous last words. I hope your Christmas and the year to come is fabulous.
DeleteRiver Fairchild - Love the gnomes and the red bows. :) Glad you got your roo fix too.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don’t have too many visitors to contend with and that your day can be semi relaxing. On to Boxing Day! I’m sure Batty and Odie would agree. Hugs to you and stay cool.
River Fairchild: Thank you. We actually have a coolish day with rain predicted for today and tomorrow. Many will be unhappy. We are not.
DeleteI hope your day is quiet and peaceful - and that you can paint to your heart's content. Much love dear friend.
True Australian style Xmas scenes. The ribbons seem to be tied around the tree trunks in Australian cities.
ReplyDeleteroentare: I hadn't realised the the tree bows were a city innovation. It has only reached one suburb here - though there are signs that it is spreading.
DeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteSome lovely festive decorations to enjoy (and the roos, of course). I hope you have a healthy and peaceful festive season.
Best wishes
Ellie
Ellie Foster: Thank you. The early signs suggest we will have a low key few days - which suits us down to the ground. I hope that your festive season is everything you could hope for.
DeleteThose baubles are lovely as are the gnomes. I am rather fond of gnomes these days :) A cute way of decorating too. The red bows on the trees are very pretty and I'm a tree lover too. Did they really bulldoze your mother’s home and erect a MickyD? They did the same to husband’s old home and replaced it with a pawn shop. Those roadside ducks are cute all prettied up with their trinkets. But the star of the show for me are those delightful and adorable kangaroos. So glad you got your fix. You gave me one too and I always love those adorable kangas. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and wishing you only the very best in the New Year.
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: They did indeed bulldoze my mother's house and replaced it with a mansion that takes up the whole block. It had extensive gardens when I grew up and there is simply no room for them now. We love our roos too. Seeing them improves any day.
DeleteI hope your Christmas festivities and the coming year are lovely.
I'm glad to see the gnomes are back - I get a kick out of them! Thanks for sharing the festive photos. Wishing you comfort and joy in return! :-)
ReplyDeleteDiane Henders: I was very pleased to see the return of the gnomes too. I must take the time to drop a card in their letter box to say how much I appreciate them.
DeleteYour neighborhood decorations are great, and the gnomes even better. Love the red ribbons round the street trees in your roo neighborhood. Seasons greetings to you.
ReplyDeleteJoanne Noragon: I am glad that you also like these decorations. I think the gnomes are very special. All the very best of the season to you and to kitty.
DeleteSeasons greetings to you!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the fruit salad 🍉🍐🍎🫐🍓🍒
kylie: Thank you - and to you. And I WILL enjoy the fruit salad. I made it this morning and will probably live on it for the next week or so.
DeleteSomething about the trees getting a ribbon makes me feel good, for the trees. Like they might like that. Like maybe they're being noticed and honored.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: That is a lovely thought. I hope so too. I really hope it.
DeleteI almost expected to see the 'roo with a Santa hat. I love the joy that these express.
ReplyDeleteBill: A roo would need BIG holes in a Santa hat for its ears. I am glad that you like the decorations in our neck of the woods.
DeleteI think that Christmas has become a de facto celebration for all and sundry, with many cultures joining in, in addition to their own traditions. We just let it come and go as quietly and unobtrusively as we can! All the best for 2024, Sue.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: Thank you. Your approach to Christmas strikes me as very sensible. I hope that you and Miriam enjoy your day and all the year(s) to come.
DeleteIt's weird to see Christmas decorations in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
:o)
Cheers
PM
Plastic Mancunian: Not weird at all. Christmas has landed here (though it is still early). I hope you and your family also have a wonderful time.
DeleteThe gnomes are my favourite, they seem so full of different personalities to me. But beribboned trees are a close second.

WWW
Wisewebwoman: Just for a change (not) I am with you. I hope the gnome family continues to put them up for years to come.
DeleteThank you for sharing these festive decorations! It's heartwarming to see the various ways people celebrate the season. Each decoration tells a unique story, adding to the collective joy of the holidays.
ReplyDeleteVisit https://www.melodyjacob.com/2023/12/what-i-would-love-to-be-gifted-for-Christmas-and-new-year.html
MELODY JACOB: Thank you. Christmas Day has arrived here and much as I delight in the decorations I am well aware that it is a difficult time of year for many people and my heart goes out to them.
DeleteI really love the red bows on the trees. They look so festive.
ReplyDeleteMy decorations are very minimal this year. Less decorations for me to put away.
Wising you and Himself, peace, joy, hope and love.
Hugs, Julia
Julia: Snap on the minimal decorations. And thank you for those all encompassing wishes - which I hope come true for you too.
DeleteI love the decorations.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday.
Mary Kirkland: Thank you. I like them too - and hope your Christmas is wonderful.
DeleteYou and your sweetheart, and the kitties, are in my heart and prayers. Thank you for sharing the festive things in your area.
ReplyDeletemessymimi: Thank you so much. I hope (so much) that you get some much needed rest in the coming days and that you have a blessed Christmas.
DeleteI love those adorable gnomes. And those red ribbons. I do hope you and yours have a wonderful and warm Christmas, dear friend.
ReplyDeleteDJan: The gnomes are charming aren't they? I am so glad that they put them up again. It is cooler today (yay) and we have rain predicted for this afternoon. A cool and damp Christmas sounds perfect to me - though I suspect others will disagree. I hope that you and SmartGuy have a wonderful day tomorrow.
DeleteI hope you enjoy the day and that the new year is good to you. The photos and decorations are charming.
ReplyDeletee: Thank you very much. Here's to a kind New Year for the world.
DeleteI'm sure I left a comment on this post about how festive the trees look with their red ribbons. I don't remember what else I said, but I'm sure it was the most brilliant comment ever. It's too bad it disappeared before the world could worship it.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Janie Junebug: All of your comments are brilliant - and thank you. Consider your missing comment worshipped and thank you for this one too.
DeleteBeautiful decorations, How did I miss this yesterday?? Senior moment?
ReplyDeleteRiver: I suspect you were busy, and hope you had a wonderful time.
DeleteThank you for sharing the decorations. The gnomes are such a cute idea. Glad you got your kangaroo fix. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
ReplyDeleteFrom Rosey. ☃️ I am not home and didn’t realize I’d be an anonymous poster. 🎄
DeleteRosey: Our Christmas was quiet but lovely. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we did.
DeleteI love those huge trees and those red bows. How pretty! Merry Christmas and Aloha from Hawaii.
ReplyDeletegigi-hawaii: The bows are lovely and seeing virtually a whole suburb decorated in them even lovely. I am glad you were able to spend time with David at Christmas.
DeleteThank you my friend for sharing of yourself. This was perhaps the most beautiful and touching personal Christmas shared with me today. I like that you grew up around roos. Miss can be a challenging day for those of us who don't have much family near or events planned to distract us. Truthfully I was a little down this morning. Just wishing it where the day after Christmas. But you have touched me with the real spirit of the day and changed my emotional weather. What a lovely gift! Thank you for always sharing of yourself in such a sincere and authentic way. I love you. Aloha
ReplyDeleteCloudia: Thank you. So very much. I am constantly blown away by how deep and meaningful our blog friendships can be. I do hope that your mood stays lifted. Hugs.

My good thoughts are with you and the yours, dear Sue.
Herewith that naughty "w" is taken away.
DeleteSean Jeating: I am glad that blogger has relented. And of course my thoughts are with you and yours too.
DeleteThe red ribbon idea is seriously lovely, uplifting and adding a feeling of community spirit too. I remember those Christmas gnomes too! I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas
ReplyDeleteKim: You are right about the community spirit those red ribbons depict. It isn't a small suburb and I love that so many have come on board and decorated their trees. Our Christmas was quiet and lovely. I hope yours was great.
DeleteMerry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteashok: Thank you. I have just rescued you from spam. I hope the festive season is treating you well.
DeleteEC
ReplyDeleteHave a season's greetings.
Bob: Thank you - and to you and yours.
DeleteSuch a beautiful post ☻
ReplyDeleteHope you had a wonderful Christmas ♥
aussie aNNie: Thank you. Our Christmas was quiet, but very nice indeed.
DeleteIt was nice to come here again, and see all the Christmas decorations. I hope your Christmas was everything you hoped for and happy new year to you and your loved ones.
ReplyDeleteLL Cool Joe: Our Christmas was quiet and peaceful - just the way we like it. I hope yours was good too - and it is lovely to see you back in the blogosphere again.
DeleteI love your roos, Sue! And I enjoyed seeing the Christmas decorations in your area. The tree ribbons were really pretty, and who doesn't love gnomes? Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteFundy Blue: We love our roos too. Going down to the stretch of the lake in which we often see them is heart balm and solace.
DeleteThanks for the giggles!
ReplyDeleteJ Cosmo Newbery: It is my pleasure.
Deletehope you had a great festive season. Love the red ribbons and the christmas gnomes!
