Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.
The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life. Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.
The
rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent. Post some photos
under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Sorry I still
haven't succeeded in working out how to do a blog hop. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.
I usually run with a theme. It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Starting off Yarralumla, a suburb in my city. In recent years they have developed the I think charming habit of tying red bows around trees in the very leafy suburb. It is titled 'Yarralumla does Christmas'.
These last two trees are outside where my parents house stood before it was replaced with a McMansion. Decades ago I spent many happy hours in those trees with an apple and a book.
Of course while we were in the area I demanded a roo fix.
Closer to home there are also decorations. An early morning walk (just after 7) made me smile.
Santa and Rudolph are obviously not early morning risers.
And the Christmas gnomes are back. The householder was watering his garden when I went past (it is going to be hot again) and I was pleased to tell him how much I like his decorations. As I suspected the initials on the gnomes are for family members. He told me that they were fading a bit - to which I could only reply 'Aren't we all'.
The last photo in yet another photo heavy post is not Christmassy at all but I loved it.
The Guard Chickens were in hiding though. I hope you find things to make you smile this coming week.
Fun to see your Sunday Selections, as they always are. A wonderful tradition with the red bows on the trees, the kangaroos are a joy to me, seeing all those expressions. We have a lot of those deflated decorations around here, too much sherry in the eggnog I'm thinking. The ornaments on the trees are very festive and those gnomes are adorable! So glad you saw the man and told him how much you enjoyed them. If you see him again please tell him they brought me a big smile :) And the chicken warning at the end also, chuckling at that one. Thank you for another super post my friend and I wish you a Happy Holiday and a Very Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: Too much sherry in the eggnog is the perfect explanation. Thank you - and thank you for your kind words and holiday wishes.
DeleteThose red-bowed trees are wonderful. And I am so happy that those childhood trees of yours were preserved.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course the roos make me smile every time.

WWW
Wisewebwoman: I do love a roo fix. They make me smile too. And yes, while the house I grew up in has gone, I am glad that the trees stand tall and strong.
DeleteI am very happy to see that you got your ‘roo fix, Sue. I know how therapeutic that is for you. I bet the red bows on the trees performed the same function too. Stay well. I hope the holidays are kind to you. All the very best - David
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: Thank you. I have never, ever come away from a roo fix without feeling better. The next week will be hot and horrid but I am luckier than many. I hope you and Miriam enjoy your low key celebrations.
DeleteSuch unique and original decorations in your area—it’s so interesting to see them showcased. I loved the red bows, the Christmas globes, and Rudolph taking a nap! The kangaroos are amazing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful Sunday collection🧡🌲⛄
Katerinas Blog: The roos are a year round fixture and delight me. I like the other decorations I showcased too - thank you.
DeleteDear EC
ReplyDeleteI love the decorations around the neighbourhood - simple bows, bauble, gnome trees (they are great!) and slightly the worse for wear Santa and Reindeer who have started celebrating a little too early by the looks of things! Of course, the roos too - always a joy to see.
Lots to make us smile - thank you.
Have a very Happy week
Best wishes
Ellie
Ellie Foster: Aren't the gnome trees great? I was thrilled when I saw he had continued the tradition - and think he liked hearing how charming they are. And yes, the roos are a joy.
DeleteGuard chickens just cracked me up. I'm sending that picture to a lawyer in Alabama who has a yard full of cool chickens
ReplyDeleteLove how the trees are decorated.
The Blog Fodder: Guard chickens cracked me up too. I sent the photo to himself's sister. Her chooks live in a Taj Mahal in their back yard and she has been known to watch television with a rooster in her lap. A whole suburb filled with trees and bows is quite a sight.
DeleteThe gnomes are awesome. Guard chicken. lol
ReplyDeleteLoved the ribbons and the ornaments in the trees.
Mary Kirkland: I am so glad that others seemed to like these things as much as I did.
DeleteLove all these signs and decorations
ReplyDeleteroentare: I am glad to hear that.
DeleteRiver Fairchild - I always love your walkabouts and the varied decorations in your city - ribbons, gnomes, and snoring Santa and Rudolph bring a smile to my face.
ReplyDeleteI’m so glad you went for a Roo fix too! It still amazes me that you can share space with them like that.
Keep cool as you can through the heat you’re having and sending snowy thoughts your way.
River Fairchild: Snowy thoughts are very welcome. We have a brief cool change tomorrow (when I have physio) and I am looking forward to it. The decorations are good aren't they?
DeleteAre the kangaroos wild or did you go to a zoo?
ReplyDeleteSandi: The kangaroos are wild and live beside the lake. Where they thrive.
Delete😃
DeleteSandi: It is lovely isn't it?
DeleteLovely, your trees, roos and gnomes, Sue.
ReplyDeleteFor a few years now in December, an invisible Christmas gnome called Wolfram has been moving in with our children who live opposite and who, in addition to daily written correspondence, gets up to some lovely nonsense at night.
Last Monday, he asked Grandpa Sean to cook this delicious rice with chicken fillet pieces and baked beans in tomato sauce, just like last year.
Wolfram's wish was, of course, my command ;-)
Sean Jeating: I love you being at Wolfram's command. And feel sure that others do too.
DeleteGood morning, EC...I wish you and "Him" all the very best wishes for Christmas. Relax and enjoy yourselves. I'll certainly be doing so. Nothing much different than any other day is occurring here with me, because it will just be me and me. Doing puzzles and reading is how I intend spending the day. No different to any other day! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope the temperatures stay down for you. Give my cuddles to Batty and Odie...all the very best. :)
Lee: Thank you. It will be a quiet day here too. I have LL on Boxing Day but other than that no commitments. Which suits me just fine. Enjoy your puzzles and books.
DeleteBellissimo post con foto meravigliose.Sono contenta che tu abbia una vita piena.Olga dal Friuli
ReplyDeleteolga: Welcome and thank you.
DeleteThat's a nice collection of Christmas themed photos, not ignoring the kangaroos. Guard chickens, haha.
ReplyDeleteAndrew: Aren't the guard chickens great?
DeleteYou have such a great sense of humor, Sue! Love your roos. The next time I make it to Australia, I'm going to see more roos, and hopefully you and Roentare. Loved the Christmas decorations! Have a lovely Christmas! ❤️
ReplyDeleteFundy Blue: I really, really hope we can meet up. And roentare takes some amazing photos doesn't he?
DeleteGuard chickens…priceless. Those are special trees. I wonder if other children enjoy them today as you once did.
ReplyDeleteMarie Smith: I didn't see any evidence that children live where our family home was so perhaps those trees remain unclimbed. Which I find a bit sad.
DeleteI remember the tree bows from last year.
ReplyDeleteMike: And possibly the year before. I am a creature of habit.
DeleteWe have a few tree bows here too, but not as many as you. That second roo is almost pale enough to be a "Snow White Boomer".
ReplyDeleteI love the gnomes on bushes and the giant tree decorations.
River: Six white boomers, snow white boomers... Perhaps she is waiting for friends and family to join her. Other suburbs are starting to join the ribbon fest. I would be v happy if it spread.
DeleteI think you showed the Christmas knomes before and at that time, I thought to myself I'll make some for next year, only scarier. I never did, but I have a reminder again. I'm sorry its hot for Christmas there. It will be pouring for Christmas here.
ReplyDeleteStrayer: I hope you will show us your gnomes if you do create them? I would prefer your rain and you would prefer our heat.
DeleteYou made me smile.
ReplyDeleteThose decorations brighten the streets in a very simple but beautiful way.
comtempadoraocidental: Simple and I think charming. And elegant too.
DeleteGuard the chickens :)
ReplyDeleteLove the decorations on the trees, they do look good, EC.
Margaret D: Better than guard the chickens - the chickens are the guardians. The decorations here are simple but I think they are lovely
DeleteI love the gnomes! And I love all the red ribbons. I hope your Summer Solstice was groovy!
ReplyDeleteBill: I love the gnomes too and was so glad to see them back again. Our Summer Solstice was fine - I am already looking forward to cooler weather (which I won't get for months).
DeleteHi EC - gosh how lovely to see clear skies with some warmth .. the idea of the red bows are a delight to see - and what fun to hear about your apple eating trees ...I used to go up a birch tree and waved around in the breeze. Those gnomes are a clever long-lasting decoration ... and I'm glad you were able to congratulate the owner. The chicken guards ... fun warning ad - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHilary Melton-Butcher: The trees I climbed are oak trees and I love that the street is still lined with them. The gnomes are great and it was wonderful be able to thank the decorator.
DeleteI loved those giant balls in the trees and the bows were also pretty. Gnomes are funny. I really dig them. I want to crochet a snowman or winter gnome of sorts. Just for fun. Wishing you a wonderful 2025! Whoosh, where did 2024 go?
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk: You can crochet as well? I would love to see a crocheted gnome.
DeleteI am wearing my crocheted holiday hat now. Wore it to work today. So fun. I think the gnomes would be great fun. Yes, I learned when I was weeeee little from my dad's mother. However, had to stop due to skin rashes and itches. Then a lady I ran into suggested cotton yarn and now I'm back at it!
DeleteThe Happy Whisk: I am so glad you found a way to revisit an old craft.
DeleteI truly love those gnomes, and beware of those chickens! Sending you lots of love and Christmas cheer from across the pond, dear friend,
ReplyDeleteDJan: The gnomes are great aren't they? They are not far from the guard chickens either. Love and Christmas cheer to you and Smart Guy.
DeleteI love all the decorations especially those dwarfs. The kangaroos are so cute. I hope you have a very merry Christmas week!
ReplyDeleteRasmaSandra: A busy week, but I hope productive. I hope yours is lovely and you and the fur babies have a wonderful time.
DeleteGuard chickens, I'd like some of those. Sounds more protective than human security.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Hanukah and holiday season, EC.
Take gentle care, always.
Rawknrobyn: Not much better than human security - the chickens were conspicuous by their absence. A wonderful Haunkah and New Year to you too.
DeleteWhat an unique culture in Yarralumla for December Moment...A red sign in a tree ...
ReplyDeleteThe kangaroo and the chicken pict make me smile. Have a great December to you and your family. Greetings
Mbul Kecil: I really like the red bows - and they are starting to spread across the city. You have a great December too.
DeleteSuch a lovely post.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all of your photographs.
The neighbourhood looks good, I especially like the gnomes :)
Happy Holidays, and may your days be not too hot!
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member ~Jan: Thank you. It is (so far) a little cooler than last week - for which I am grateful. You will miss Eddie, but I hope your Christmas is packed with love and laughter.
DeleteI love the bows. Trees that aren't eligible to be Christmas trees like to celebrate, too. Inflatables that sink to the ground look as if they need to take an antidepressant.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Janie Junebug: The bows are great. So many of the inflatables don't seem to be up to the job (pun intended).
DeleteRibbons, 'roos, gnomes and guard chickens, your post has it all. I pray you have a blessed week, and my selections are in the usual spot.
ReplyDeletemessymimi: I hope your week is blessed - and that you finally get a little rest. I enjoyed your Sunday Selections.
DeleteVery best wishes for Christmas & New Year, Sue. Thank you for being one one unfailing visitor. It means a lot. It has been an 'interesting' year: Margaret died of brain cancer, Mum suicided and I found out I had a 50yo daughter! I am hoping for a calmer 2025. ❤️
ReplyDeleteJ Cosmo Newbery: Your interesting year has been pretty much a shocker. I hope the coming year is much, much gentler and kinder.
DeleteHeartwarming photos all! Your caption re Santa not being an early riser made me smile. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a joyous, stressfree and tranquil New Year 2025.
ReplyDeleteNilanjana Bose: Thank you - those are wonderful wishes, that I hope settle down with you too.
DeleteAwesome tradition! I really think you live in an incredible place, Australia.
ReplyDeletegigi-hawaii: Thank you. Fortunately there are LOTS of incredible places. The world over.
DeleteI love the red bows on the trees. I am sorry your parents house is gone- but it's great that your childhood trees are still there. The gnomes are adorable. Love them! Thanks for taking us on a holiday tour. :) Merry Christmas to you!
ReplyDeleteDMS: Thank you. I love that my childhood trees remain too - and was very glad that the gnome builder was home so I could thank him. Happy Christmas to you too.
Deletethecontemplativecat here. Awesome photos. The chicken sign is great too.
ReplyDeleteSusan Kane: Thank you. I was pleased to find the guard chicken sign.
DeleteWhat a delightful post! It is so easy and so much fun Just hanging out with you. You are a pleasure in my life and I wish you all the best this magic season! Aloha!
ReplyDeleteCloudia: Many, many thanks. Your posts bring beauty, whimsy and wisdom to me.
DeleteAmazing 'roos. They do bring joy, and I like the bows around the trees even better atfer imagining you up there with a book and an apple - the perfect way of spending an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteThe Watch chicken made me laugh.
Charlotte (MotherOwl): I really laughed at the Guard Chickens too, and the roos always bring me joy. You are right that an afternoon in a tree with an apple and a book is close to perfect.
DeleteYour photos are wonderful... jipp... here the streets, gardens and windows have been lit up since the first Advent. It looks wonderful...
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely in the Christmas spirit and am really looking forward to this evening when the Christmas tree in the living room lights up for the first time until the New Year and the family comes together.
Merry Christmas and best wishes from Viola.
Viola: Christmas has landed here. It is still early and very quiet. I hope that you have a wonderful family Christmas.
DeleteLots of good and quirky stuff here!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely few days
kylie: As you know, quirky floats my boat. We will have a quiet day here today. I am on shift at LL tomorrow and expect it will be busy. All the very best to you and yours.
DeleteWe went to visit in-laws years ago and they lived in the country with chickens. My 2-year-old came running towards us outside, crying. A chicken was chasing him and he was just beside himself. Of course, we adults who were just sitting around outside chatting, started laughing, but I scooped him up too. Guard Chickensm indeed! :)
ReplyDeleteThe gnomes are cute and it's awesome that you got to confirm the reason for the initials. I like the red bows too. Simple, effective, and festive.
I saw a person making frozen bubbles on social media today and it reminded me of you. Came over to wish you a Merry Christmas!
mail4rosey: Chickens, and particularly roosters can indeed be fierce. Frozen bubbles? Lucky, lucky them. It was too warm here the winter just gone and in summer they are the stuff of my dreams.
DeleteThank you for thinking of me and a very Happy Christmas to you and yours.
I adore the gnomes. It makes me want to plant some evergreen shrubs so I could do the same thing. Of course I won't but in my mind I will.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas, EC!
DeleteAnne in the kitchen: I adore the gnomes too. And won't attempt to imitate them. Happy Christmas to you and yours.
Late to visit yet again! I adore those gnomes. And I actually smiled at the guard chicken. Your neighborhood goes all out for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteGot my first "Failed to Publish" in a while.
Bleubeard and Elizabeth: You are always welcome. Other suburbs do Christmas a great deal more thoroughly than ours but like you I love the gnomes. I am glad that you enjoyed the guard chicken. I did too.
